Wondering if people still do this. Unfortunately my mobile whether via the radio station apps or the AFL app gives me a clear delay so I cant hear live commentary at the game.

I like the commentary because it gives me calls on things I cant see like injury news and play on the far side of the ground. Does anyone still listen to live radio at the ground and if so how?

When I saw the title of this thread, I thought it was going to be about someone both delivering and listening to their own commentary at the game.

Yep, done it for years and would be lost without it.

Phone apps and digital radio have far too big a delay unfortunately, only way to do it is with a good old analogue radio.

You can still pick up little cheap ones. I have a tiny pocket one, about 2 inches x I inch, does the job. Had it for a few years, takes one AAA battery which lasts the whole season.

Reception is crystal clear at the G on both FM and AM. At Docklands I get no reception on any station except ABC.

I still have my Walkman...

Yep. Still do. Bought a Walkman one. Really makes the game more interesting when going by myself.

I don't own one but have tried out one of these before: http://www.sportsears.com.au/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1&products_id=12

Gives a really interesting perspective at the ground, you can clearly hear the umpires talking to the players, explaining decisions etc. Also has the option of both FM radio and TV commentary.
Hmmm. Is the TV commentary in sync with the actual game? Also, are you sure FM works at the ground? Site says "SportsEars can also be used as a personal FM radio when not at a game."

I don't but I'm regularly checking the AFL app to keep up with the stats and drop into the gameday thread on the Swans board for injury news if a player has been off for awhile.

When the 4G reception inside the SCG isn't shitting itself that is...

Yep been doing it for years and if I forget my trans (transistor radio - use you're imagination as to why it's censored) I crack it big time. Have been known to buy a new one before the first bounce. Big he's it can be hard to hear but good to keep on top of injuries and the like.

If you sit near me, I'm more than happy to call the game for you.
I just bought a cheapo $9 portable radio from Kogan, will give it a try next week, hopefully no delay!

One of the best things about being at the ground is not having to listen to the commentary. If only Tv could provide an option for crowd noise but no BT.
I once had an altercation with a supporter who wouldn't turn down Rex Hunt.

I've never had any trouble with the delay through the FM radio app on my phone.

That's because it's actual radio.

If you use the AFL live app or Triple M app or anything like that you will be getting it through the internet, which gives a delay.

I disagree, it calls the play for me when I can't see exactly which player did what on the far side of the ground, or it gives injury news such as if a player leaves the ground, and it gives me stats that I might not be noticing myself. I enjoy it.

Big difference between the TV commentary, which usually consists of simply naming the player with the ball, and radio commentary which actually describes what's happening. Radio calling can definitely enhance the live experience IMO.

I also go along with the pocket radio, I actually find it hard to watch a game at the ground without it. It gives me some small weird satisfaction that despite all the new technology in the world, the good old fashioned radio is still the best way to listen to the footy while at the ground.

I just wanted to confirm that a stand-alone digital radio (not delivered through mobile) still gives a delay?

I've previously used an old-fashioned analog and was considering upgrading to a portable digital radio this year for better reception and sound quality. But if there's a delay then that's definitely a no-go.
