Good to hear about Paps or whoever it will be positive signs on all fronts other than the finances at the Lions atm.
On the rise again keep the signatures coming.

Polks. :p

If it is Paps, it would be a great vote of confidence. He has valid, serious reasons that could pull him home. To have players wanting to stay in spite of that is a good sign.

Says something about his persona for mine....More players with character like Paps [if he is the player to re-sign] can only help our club.

Lester is a good signing considering we lost Polec and Karni from the same draft class.
He and Green were always going to be important going forward for mine.

Yeah, I agree, but I gather he's in a relationship with Zorko's sister and for that reason I always assumed he was staying. Maybe that's naive, but he didn't feel at risk in the same way some of the other kids do. Still, he's developing well IMO, and I'm glad we've kept him.

Happy to hear this.... but I hope he wasn't one of the players Swann spoke about paying overs for.

This would've been underway well before Swann came on board. Contracts generally aren't a two week negotiation and turnaround.

I know that.. Swann referred to the situation that our club has been in this year which is being forced by player managers to pay overs for players under risk that theyll leave.

I just hope Lester wasnt one. Although he's a solid player I see him as a fringe player when we have our top 22 fit

Just wondering if you listened to the interview because that's not really what he said. He said that player managers are apparently wanting more money and pointing out that we've lost a lot of players. He didn't say we're paying the money, more that its coming up in some conversations currently and that if they go down that path there could be salary cap issues further down the track. Might be worth actually having a listen for those who haven't.

I agree but note that Bewick joined the club at that time through the Brennan trade that had also brought Polec into the club...and Beams joined the Senior list as a rookie upgrade...all four played seniors last week.

Also we gained picks 22,34 and 48 for the loss of Polec...the outcome:

22 was an upgrade from pick 29 that produced Gardiner.
34 was used to recruit Robbo.
48 was upgraded as part of the Longer trade to 41 that we on traded for West.

That's right, but I think in a similarly timed thing last week Dean Warren suggested it was probably fair or at least plausible for us to pay overs when we're hoping to lock in young players more than a year from them going out of contract. Overall, I get the impression that the club understands it has to pay a 'reasonable' premium in the circumstances for some legitimite reasons, but isn't planning to be held to ransom. If that is the case, I think it's a good balance of pragmatism and foresight.

Hope we haven't paid overs for him. Aish is the main one I'm worried about. There was a set play on Saturday night where Lester picked up the tap from Martin and bangs it out on the full then Zorko does the same thing and straight through the middle. I don't see anything special in this kid

Poor Lester, even when he sticks with the club he gets shit for apparently being paid overs & people wanting better players signed.

I'm rapt that he's staying.

Our new CEO tells the world player managers are demanding overs to sign new contracts, the following week we annouce Ryan Lester has signed a new contract.

Circumstantial evidence but you can't blame people for thinking about the connection.
