Laura Kane - Does Not Impress Me At All !!

Well, in the case of women in the boxes, they do need to be there.

In some cases it was because it was people were there to do their jobs. GWS had women in the box on their recruiting team. Collingwood had women in the box on their media team.

In other cases it was because the AFL mandated it.

And let’s face it, if a club has a woman in their box serving no purpose other than being a token woman among a dozen crusty old men then that’s on the club. Don’t blame Laura Kane or the AFL for that.
Can you please make a coherent point. You're literally jumping all over the place. Read what you just said:
-Women are needed
  • In some cases, the AFL mandated it.
  • Some women are not needed.
  • It's the clubs fault, not the AFL.

Geez, you're all over the shop. Literally contradicted yourself 4 times.

It's only a matter of time before society identifies these as battles that are worth fighting, and the pendulum starts to swing back the other way.
Really?

For centuries people have been told what to do.

By the church.
By teachers.
By coaches.
By employers.
By government.
By police.
By the law.

But you think society should fight this one??

A room full of dudes, plenty of whom are not directly involved in the decision making process - and they're asked to make sure a woman is there?

That's the battle worth fighting??!

Come on man.

The proudest I’ve ever been of our game was when I took a European girlfriend to watch a game of AFL. She really didn’t want to go, and it was difficult to convince her. But when she got there she was stunned. She didn’t expect the crowd was roughly 50:50, and that families were there, and girls were having girls’ night out there. She had a blast. Where she was from football games were a thing that was purely for middle aged men to go to.

And we should be rightfully proud that everybody can now comfortable going to the footy.

But it wasn’t always that way. And we didn’t get to the way things are today without doing things that would be considered “woke”, and upsetting some conservatives along the way.
The game sucks now compared to 10-20 years ago. And I don't recall the demographics greatly changing.

The bump is dead, the tackle is dead, the entire fabric of the game has changed. Hell, we even had a dissent rule to protect the mental health of the umpires. You couldn't get any more woke. We can't even know the weights of the players because of fat shaming. what an absolute embarrassment.

Players are now being told what they can wear on mad Monday. So players can't even have dark humour anymore? What an absolute joke.

Before you have dinner every night, do you pray and thank God for eating food on Wurundjeri land? The AFL forcing this stuff down our throats achieves nothing but distain. And now, the AFLW clogs up the AFL website with stuff that the majority of people have no interest in. Sure there may be the odd person that enjoys it just like the odd person enjoys watching junior curling championships. And the commentators are all gagged now so they've got to fit the AFL agenda. They couldn't even look at Clayton Oliver and say 'he's fat' when clearly he was for all of last season.

And despite the AFL trying to be some woke leading organisation, not a single player has come out as gay in the entire competition. Not 1. When clearly there would be anywhere from 10-20 that identify as someone from the LGBTQIA+ community. So clearly, the players do not feel comfortable yet. They read society, not the dribble that the AFL is coming out with.

Rubbish, footy has always been like that before the wokeness of the past 10 years. My grandmother use to go and the crowds were always more 50.50 gender split than most world sports.

Let me make it very simple …

18 players per team are on an AFL ground because the AFL says so. 23 players are on a team sheet because the AFL says so. One woman needs to be in the box on draft night because the AFL says so

Some clubs DO employ at least 1 woman amongst the dozen or so people involved in draft night. Did those clubs need to rope in Mary from membership to sit in the middle of the room and stare at the camera all night wondering WTF she was doing there? No.

Some clubs DON’T employ any women in roles that are part of draft night. If those clubs need to get Mary from membership to play stuffed mullet to a TV audience …

… blame the club for that, don’t blame the AFL.

I think redheads were under-represented in the war rooms on draft night.

What a disgrace!

Do you realise two of these points are very basic laws of the game, whilst the third point is discriminatory?

Some clubs DON’T employ any women in roles that are part of draft night. If those clubs need to get Mary from membership to play stuffed mullet to a TV audience …

… blame the club for that, don’t blame the AFL.
Why is the club to 'blame'?

What if club A has a female who thinks the why a traditional male would (whatever that is) who is involved in draft night, whilst club B has all males, but one who thinks the way a traditional female would (whatever that is)?

In that instance, would club B be 'better off'?

Someone must have photoshopped all the women in this picture...

That’s nothing to do with “woke”.

That’s all due to concussion and (1) the long term health of players and (2) the threat of litigation due to point one.

If you had a choice between the game adapting to the times, or being sued out of existence, which would you pick?

Hell, we even had a dissent rule to protect the mental health of the umpires. You couldn't get any more woke.

Again, nothing to do with “woke”.

This one is due to (as you say) (1) an employers obligation under employment law, but also (2) to help recruitment of umpires at the lower levels. Kids wanting to earn a bit of pocket money umpiring don’t need to be exposed to dickhead parents yelling abuse at them.

We can't even know the weights of the players because of fat shaming. what an absolute embarrassment.

Yeah, dunno what is behind that one. Maybe woke.

Suspect that if you had a chat with an AFL exec over a beer they’d be able to provide you with a reasonable explanation that you or I hadn’t even fathomed.

We’d have no idea about the nonsense that the AFL has to deal with behind the scenes.

Players are now being told what they can wear on mad Monday. So players can't even have dark humour anymore? What an absolute joke.

There were some Mad Monday stunts that IMO clearly crossed the line. That’s not a “woke” thing, that’s just basic decency.

But I agree with you that the AFL way way overreacted in their response. I suspect that was more about brand protection than any “woke” pressures.

Before you have dinner every night, do you pray and thank God for eating food on Wurundjeri land?

The AFL is well represented by indigenous players so I think it’s reasonable that the AFL plays a role in fostering respect towards those players (as long as it is done in consultation with indigenous elders).

I get that people get upset about these actions when they’re tokenistic. But IMO the AFL does it well and I haven’t seen any evidence of them being tokenistic about yet.

The AFL forcing this stuff down our throats achieves nothing but distain. And now, the AFLW clogs up the AFL website with stuff that the majority of people have no interest in. Sure there may be the odd person that enjoys it just like the odd person enjoys watching junior curling championships.

The reason AFLW is “clogging” up the AFL website is because it’s the AFLW finals and the AFL is in off-season so stuff all is happening?

And the AFL helpfully colour code the stuff on the website. If it’s tagged orange it’s not for you, if it’s tagged blue it is.

And the commentators are all gagged now so they've got to fit the AFL agenda. They couldn't even look at Clayton Oliver and say 'he's fat' when clearly he was for all of last season.

The quality of AFL commentators these days is terrible. Not being able to call Clayton Oliver fat is the least of things we need to worry about.

Oh, and if you were an AFL exec and you received a note from Clayton Oliver’s manager containing a letter from Clayton Oliver’s doctor kindly requesting that the AFL take measures to prevent their patient from being fat-shamed. And General Counsel advises that the request needs to be taken seriously …

… what would you do?

Would you tell General Counsel, Oliver’s manager and Oliver’s Doctor to stop being so woke and to pull their head in?

I don’t work for the AFL, but I can tell you for a fact that these situations occur in the real world all the time.

And despite the AFL trying to be some woke leading organisation, not a single player has come out as gay in the entire competition. Not 1. When clearly there would be anywhere from 10-20 that identify as someone from the LGBTQIA+ community.

There are many who are openly “L” and pretty sure we’ve had some that are openly “B”. We’ve had one “T” post AFL career, but the competition hasn’t had to deal with the conplexities of that in-competition yet. But true, there have been no openly “G”’s, “Q”’s, “I”’s or “A”’s.

So clearly, the player do not feel comfortable yet. They read society, not the dribble that the AFL is coming out with.

I don’t think it’s a big deal.

That's easy for you to say. Your team had the clear MVP.

How is it discriminating? Nobody is stopping clubs from cramming as many men in the room as they can fit.

Why is the club to 'blame'?

(1) This is not about men versus women. I’ve worked in female dominated workplaces and they underperform just as much as male dominated ones do. In my own experience gender balanced workplaces are way higher performing and that’s nothing to do with “woke” and everything to do with profit. Trust me, if companies didn’t see operational benefits from gender balance then it would have been a fad that ended ages ago.

(2) This isn’t even about gender balancing the draft box. The AFL is only asking for 1 out of around a dozen - and if even that is contentious then that’s pretty sad.

(3) We want to attract the best people to the industry, so why wouldn’t we want 50% of the population being able to watch draft night and think “Hey that person who looks like me seems to have a fun job, I wanna do that!”

(4) If somebody wearing club gear is sitting there like a shag on a rock clearly doing SFA and wondering why they’re even there then that reflects poorly on the club whose colours they’re wearing. Irrespective of their gender.

I don’t think it’s a big deal.

Obviously if they said “you have to have a woman on your list management team” that’d be ridiculous.

This is just a TV production. That’s all. Everything about it is tokenism and show business.

What’s the worst that could happen? A girl sees it and thinks “hmm women can work in AFL admin”. I mean who really cares.

Agreed 👍

But I reckon the AFL’s previous GM football thought the directive sucked and decided to be passive aggressive about it. Stuck a token woman in the middle of the frame and made her sit there and do nothing and look bored out of her brain.

A lot to cover:

Yes I agree with the definition you've used for woke. I just extrapolated it out to basically anything that is being overly sensitive which yes isn't the true definition of woke.

The mad Monday. Guys got suspended because they dressed up as the twin towers and Osama? like really? How people can get so easily offended by this is baffling. Years ago, some players dressed up as Ricky Nixon and the Stkilda school girl. I think we can all agree that dark humour is often the funniest. But sure, just let them get dressed up as Mario and Luigi or something neutral. Such a joke.

And no, the aflw standard is equivalent to probably under 12 boys. Not joking. Speaking for the majority here, no-one wants it on the afl website. Get their own website just like the wnba.

And no, there is absolutely nothing an afl executive could tell me that would educate me. Hell Laura Kane can't even pronounce common surnames.

And no, if im an afl executive I'm not succumbing to that stupidity. Do you think Dana White doesn't talk about his fighters weights? The fact that you even think this would happen is a joke. If clayton Oliver couldn't handle that criticism then he clearly isn't ready to be a professional athlete. And yes, I would tell Oliver and his team to stop being so woke. I'd happily suspend him until further notice. The afl players have far too much power. If I was in charge, this wouldn't even be an issue.

As you say, the standard of commentary is terrible. but that's because of the wokeness and being PC all of the time. Hell the AFL draft comes on and the reality is that 50% of the picks won't make the grade but the commentators bang on like every kid is James Hird. They're too afraid to even mention their weaknesses. The whole industry is cooked. No-one really calls is as it is. Kane Cornes is the closest. When he said that Melbourne's list looked weak and aren't as developed and muscular as other teams I was like 'hooray, am actual option'.

The only thing that really bothers me these days, is the chronic whinging.

My god it's unbearable.

The Right is the new Left.

Both are as ludicrous as eachother. Mirror image.

All the teams had 10 to 15 people in their rooms. When their recruiting list order had been prepared days in advance. Even teams wanting to do live pick swaps would have done it in advance.

So one of them doing nothing was female. 8 of them doing nothing were male.

The proudest I’ve ever been of our game was when I took a European girlfriend to watch a game of AFL. She really didn’t want to go, and it was difficult to convince her. Nah, it's always been that way.
