i agree that in his prime he was up there with the best of them but looking at his overall career, does he deserve to be classed an AFL champoin as many ppl think he is
Sums it up perfectly.Depends on classification of a champion.
Early in his career he was acknowledged as a super-athlete who didnt necessarily combine that with footy smarts. Eventually he put it all together and was both unstoppbale and a joy to watch but he didnt do this over a prolonged period or with great consistency. When he finally appeared to have put it all together, including consistency, he started with the knee problems and hasnt been the same since.
So, while there is little doubt that his best was as good as anyone else in the comp and better than 99% the champion status may not be warranted due to the period of his greatness being relatively short.
Just my opinion.
His best was the best ive seen, but it was only for a short period.
