... because of the SC's finding that essentially grants a president immunity for all acts that can be interpreted as part of the role of a president - in a finding that is so broad that it's bonkers; he could in theory suspend the next election purely out of fear of an insurrection and have it be interpreted as part of his role as president - and because he can just issue himself immunities for all cases before the court as he leaves.

It doesn't matter whether he was guilty or not. He's above the law.
Sitting Presidents have had civil and criminal immunity well before the Trump verdict. Plus it isn't a 'Just Trump' law. Im sure Biden is vreathing easier as well

The expansion of it to include periods when they aren't president is completely new.

There's also the fact that this is an exceedingly minor nitpick to my post, the point of which was that of course they're winding up all proceedings against him. He'll defend them all the way to the SC on presidential immunity - regardless of if they occurred when he was president - and even if he loses there (it's a pretty big if) he'll just pardon himself.

It's heady stuff. He could legitimately shoot someone in full public view - as he famously boasted - and get away completely scot free. Wouldn't even take a reputational hit.

You said the SCOTUS expanded to times when a former President wasnt President anynore but also say due to it Trump can cancel the next election. Only sitting Presidents could possibly do that so not sure how the expansion of the law applies.

This is very "Look over there!"

My original post was this:

You've focused on the tangent - indicated thusly - but not the point: that he is essentially above prosecution now.

Because he is President/President elect he is covered by the Constitution and has been for years.

You used the example of him stopping elections. The fearmongering catcall of the Democrats that the US electorate dismissed as nonsense on Nov 5th.
Pam Bondi. Want to talk about this Stokey?
There it is. I knew there'd be something you all could get your knickers in a twist about.

It appears you don't like facts.
So in your opinion is it right that Pam Bondi dropped the case against donnys university after receiving a donation from donny?

... Stokey, why do you do this? Do you not want to be taken seriously, to have a conversation in good faith?

You're repeatedly refusing to argue against my post in order to continue attacking. I'm not telling you you have to play defense, but I am telling you that you're attempting to shift conversation repeatedly away from what you don't want to talk about.

Ah here we go. You were the one that raised Trump now being able to stop elections due to the recent SCOTUS ruling. It is blatantly untrue. Easier to just threaten than address an objection to your position.

On July 1, 2024, the Court ruled in a 6–3 decision that presidents have absolute immunity for acts committed as president within their core constitutional purview, at least presumptive immunity for official acts within the outer perimeter of their official responsibility, and no immunity for unofficial acts.

I'm not sure how that gives Trump presidential immunity for acts regardless of if they occurred when he was President or that he could shoot someone and get away completely scot free.

The SC decision does not give Trump unbounded power to do whatever whenever he wants: the act has to be during his Presidency, it has to fall within the core bounds as stated in the Constitution.

Presumptive immunity means that his act was immune to prosecution as the starting point but could be rebutted on the facts.

I doubt he could just pardon himself either.

With the presumptive immunity and pardon aspects, it would be up to a majority Republican appointed Supreme Court. They do things that Trump doesn't like sometimes, but I certainly wouldn't be banking on them to take principled stands.

this is a concern. the pre-election mood was that the youth vote would favour harris. i would have thought climate change would have been a deciding factor for them as it’s going to affect them most. seems most of them are dumb as f**k too.
