Wikipedia

Justin "Leppa" Leppitsch (born 1 October 1975) is a former Australian rules footballer who was a key defender for the Brisbane Lions.

Leppitsch played with the Hawthorn Under 19s as a 16-year old in 1991, however did not make the Hawks' senior list. He then moved to the Dandenong Stingrays where he was recruited by the Brisbane Bears.

He made his debut in 1993 for the Bears, playing his first few seasons as a tall wingman, using his pace and hard running.

Under the coaching of Leigh Matthews, he bulked up substantially over the following seasons, becoming one of the league's heavyweights and enabling him to hold down a key position at either end of the ground. He played at centre half back in the Lions' three premiership sides from 2001 to 2003 and earned All-Australian status three times.

Late in his career, Leppitsch battled a chronic hamstring-related back injury which inevitably ended his career due to the resulting muscle wastage. He announced his retirement from the AFL on 5 June 2006.

Re: Leppa Retires

Holy crap. That was a surprise. I think a credit to him because I think he has done what is best for the team.

I believe that Leppitsch has played no small part in all the success of the Lions, and he has been as important a member of our side as probably anyone. Leppitsch is probably one of the reasons I started following AFL (from a Rugby League background) because I went to school with him at Kenmore High. I think he was in crutches just about every time I saw him though.

Well done Leppa on a magnificant career.

Re: Leppa Retires

Leppa has long been one of my favourite players, from back before Brisbane hit the big time. It has been obvious this moment was coming but it's sad that it has. All the best big fella!

The crutches were due to a knee reco he had done after injuring his knee in 1993, in the QAFL game leading upto our recording breaking Round 8 game vs Sydney.

Re: Leppa Retires

A friend of mine into more things medical said to me late last year that she felt Leppa would not play again as the type of injury he had was so deblitating that some people can have problems walking. It looks as though Leppa tried hard to beat it but........ :(.

I wish him all the best for the future. He seemed a humourous bloke when a couple of us talked to him one night and I suspect he may be able to get a gig in the media. He was a superb backman for us. Robert Walls said tonight on On The Couch that he was the first Vic to come up and embrace Brisbane. For this we Lions can be grateful. Champion player. He will be there at in the backline in our team of the decade. :thumbsu:

Re: Leppa Retires

He has been an integral part of best team to take the ground in probably the history of the game(I may be a little biased). Almost from the moment that Tim Watson described him as "the biggest tease in football" when he missed a "sitter" from right in front he turned into one our most reliable backmen. One of the best sights in footy was to see Leppa galloping through the centre of the Gabba, two or three bounces and then a long kick to Lynch in the goal square. Ah memories, whatever happens you can't take those away. Well done Leppa, what a great career. I wish you all the best in whatever you do.:thumbsu: :)

Re: Leppa Retires

Close eyes in respect.

Leppa was a great man, on and off the game. Good Work mate you will always be remembered as an awsome player, and one of my favs in what might have been the best afl team in history (sry for being biased).

I first got the news while walking around melbourne on monday (after just visiting the fitzroy gardens :) :thumbsu:). It was on the channel 7 building or something. I stood there for like a minute lol going, NO WAY :(. I was quite devistated, my mate (does not follow footy) was like wats wrong after i stopped lol.

Leppa you are one of the best and i am deeply sad that your wonderfull career had to end like this its not fair and you deserve way better! I would love to see him stay at the club and mabye teach some of the younger blokes some things. It would be wonderfull for the club!

Well done on a awsome career Leppa YOU LEGEND!!!!!:thumbsu: :thumbsu: :thumbsu:

Re: Leppa Retires

WHAT A FLAMING LEGEND!! Best red-headed player since Voss and Akermainis. Onya Leppa!!

He always was one of my all time favourites. Came to the club when we were really struggling - i remember going in the early days and thinking we had just drafted the next best forward in the game. When Leigh came to the club, he turned him into arguably the best CHB from the last 10 or so years. Sad to see him leave - but did everything in the game.

We are going to have to get used to saying goodbye to some champions.

The question remains - who gets the number 23?

Re: Leppa Retires

I can't help but join the love in. :)

What an absolute champ! Was one of the blokes you was part of the guts of our premiership teams. When Mal joined Johnno and Leppa in the backline at Brisbane they were just a joy to watch. Always so solid and Leppa was the archetypal (sp?) CHB.

Sad to see him go in such a way.

Leigh Matthews

Former great Brisbane Lions centre half-back Justin Leppitsch would have played on Franklin by making it a priority to be right with him whenever he was within goalkicking range , which for Buddy is anything up to 60 metres, and not to be too concerned if he pushed up into the midfield.

3. Justin Leppitsch, 1992 (Brisbane Lions)

Leppitsch played with Hawthorn at Under-19 level but was taken by Brisbane with their second pick in the '92 draft (the first was used on Nathan Chapman). Leppa started as a dashing wingman, then became a key forward before establishing himself as a key defender and one of the cornerstones of the Lions' dominant era. Has three premiership medals, is a three-time All-Australian and a best-and-fairest winner in 1999 (in a fairly handy side).

Well worth watching if you missed it on Tuesday night and a reminder what a good Lions man Justin was / is irrespective of his failings as a senior coach at the club.

I only just saw the interview today, I enjoyed it. I think his comment about ‘coming along at the wrong time’ was very true. He’s an intelligent and articulate person who just didn’t work as the coach of the Lions at that time. He could work quite well as a Harding/Clarkson/Scott type replacement.

Where Are They Now?: '03 Premiership Team

Justin Leppitsch, senior coach at Brisbane from 2014-16 to take his playing/coaching game tally to 293, won three flags as Damien Hardwick’s right-hand-man at Richmond in 2017-19-20 and is in his second year as McRae’s lieutenant at Collingwood. A father of three girls.
