Is Toby Nankervis A Top 10 Ruckman Of The Competition?

The likes of Gawn, Grundy, Goldstein, Naitanui, Witts, Ryder, Martin, Jacobs, Kreuzer & McEvoy probably pushes Nankervis out of the that range.

He's a good, honest trier...but I don't think he's in the top 10.

The counter argument could be others alluding to the suggestion that he makes Cotchin, Prestia & Martin better players. Or that his team is on the top of the ladder.

What do you think?

An odd thread topic.

Doesn’t jump too high or run too fast, but he resembles Ivan Maric in his ability to soldier on to the final bell. Importantly, his attitude sets the tone for the team. He’s a born competitor.

Not in the top echelon but we’re pretty happy with Nank at Tigerland.

He’s more an additional onballer.

Not great at getting hit outs. Average at hit outs to advantage, but good at getting on the deck and winning the ball for the team.

Excellent at dropping back in vital situations and clunking some massive contested marks and can drop forward and kick some goals.

Probably not a top 10 ruckman, not in the league of Gawn and Grundy, but an excellent player who adds a lot to our team.

Ivan Maric and Toby Nankervis are both very undersung heroes for Richmond, before Maric join the club Richmond were hopeless but after he joined we turned into a competitive outfit and a constant finals side, when he missed the first half of 2014 Richmond slid to a record of 3-10 yet soon after he was back in the team we won 9 in a row to make finals, than in 2016 he was passed it and miss basically the whole year and Richmond dropped out of finals, but when we picked up Nankervis to fill his shoes we went on to win the grand final and haven't looked back since

Richmond without him are a completely different proposition. He is hard match up on and good below his knees and can take a mark around the ground, particularly forward. If he's not top 10, he's 11th or 12th. Have him ahead of Witts. Not seen much of the GC, but Sunday was lamentable by just about all concerned.

Idk about top 10, don't know enough about the top ruckman in the league. Important thing to remember is he's only 23, so he's only going to get better.
Currently, he's not a great tap ruck, but isn't a liability around the ground like others (HAMPSON) are. Fits very well into our system - as Dimma said a few months back - I'm glad we've got our bloke.

Seems like the David Hale type. Never going to be the best ruckman but is good around the ground and can be a handful up forward.

Not going to win Richmond games off his own boot but without him they'd be a far lesser side. Probably one of their most important players structurally.

He's limited as a ruckman, but his stoppage work and around the ground work is underrated. He also makes the midfield walk taller.
Is he top 10 on ability? Probably not.
Top 10 on value and impact to his side? Definitely.

This is where I`d sit him. Sinclair and Bellchambers are two other underrated rucks whose physicality and additional work outside of rucking really has them forgotten about, even though they can easily restrict the influence of all bar 3 or 4 of those named rucks, or beat them elsewhere.

No but an honest hard worker who plays his role brilliantly.

Gawn and Grundy have ability to effect contests.

He’s 16th in the league for hit outs, which suggests he’s one of the worst among number 1 ruckman for hitouts. This is despite only having Grigg as a second ruckman, so he’s down the order for hitouts despite carrying a heavier load than nearly every other ruck in the league.

He balances it out though by being number 3 amongst all ruckman for disposals per game, behind just Grundy and Martin. He slightly edges Gawn for disposals.

He’s basically the same player that Ivan Maric was for us. He’s on the shorter side for a ruck (199cm) and he doesn’t have a big leap, and doesn’t win many hitouts. But hitout numbers have proven to be largely overrated at Richmond and he more than makes up for it with his second efforts once the ball hits the deck. Maric was the same.

In fact, if you look at Richmond’s form since the arrival of Maric you will notice something interesting: the only time Richmond have had dips in form is when either Maric or Nankervis aren’t playing.

They managed a 15-7 record in each of 2013, 2015 and 2017, when either Maric or Nankervis played 20+ games.

I’m 2014 they started the season 3-10 before winning 9 on the trot? Maric missed the first 9 and was replaced by Shaun Hampson, who, while great at getting hitouts, had no physical presence and was a liability outside of ruck contests. He played in a few close losses to start with before Hampson was dropped and the 9-0 run started.

He retired at the end of 2015, with Nankervis arriving for 2017. What happened in 2016? Hampson played out the year as number 1 ruck and the team bombed.

The value of both Maric and Nankervis isn’t in their hitouts, where both were relatively ordinary, it’s in the extra effort and physical presence they have once he ball hits the deck. They double up like an extra midfielder.

To answer the question, he’s probably about 10th overall. As far as value to Richmond goes there’s probably only a handful that would be a better fit.

Depends if you judge a ruckman purely on his tap work or the effect he has around stoppages and on the overall game. He is invaluable to Richmond and the way they play. His real strength lies in his tackling, shepherding, buffering and marking. He runs all day and makes though around hi better. Without him our midfielder look average. I wouldn't put him in the same category as Gawn and Grundy but, like the Mullet before him, his worth is invaluable to our side on and off the field
