In the same vein of the 2022 version, Carlton started the season well this year (with some wins over mostly bottom 6 teams) and are now about to embark on a run of some pretty tough games with Brisbane (4th) at Marvel, Bulldogs (10th) at Marvel, Collingwood (1st) at the MCG, Sydney (11th) at the SCG, Melbourne (2nd) at the MCG and Essendon (9th) at the MCG to come over the next 6 weeks.

I think you can chalk this one down as a loss.

Team is so top heavy. Half their side is bottom 4 worthy. Have some bonafide A-graders but **** all else.

Cripps has a quiet game, Walsh has a mare and the twin towers get no supply and it's game over.

IMO Voss is a major part of the problem.

He's got an amazing talent pool, including real game breakers, which is an amazing resource for an incoming coach.

Most first year coaches take a while to assess talent, teach a game plan and, as a result, their teams start slowly and build. The opposite has happened with Voss at Carlton and it really looks he got great buy in early, but then other clubs worked out his game plan, and he couldn't counter their response.

He's never been the sharpest tool in the shed and regularly gets out-coached on game day. His team doesn't have consistent application or the ability to change tempo during a quarter. Firing the team up during a break can't be your only coaching tactic on game day.

Personally, I hope he stays at Carlton for years.

Repost from the original thread.

I was terrified when Collingwood interviewed him and thrilled when Carlton hired him.

How is it possible for a team to always win the possession count and always lose the game?
Just another reason why stats mean nothing.
shit coach, with a shit coaching record and a shit game plan

To be fair on Voss, and to a lesser extent Teague and Bolton, it’s looking a like the list and the assistant coaching group. How many senior coaches can you keep sacking whilst playing the same or a similar 22? Never seems to be much player development. O’Brien and Dow are cases in point.

Carlton have constantly thrown huge contracts to players to fix issues; Kennedy, Saad, Williams, McGovern etc. They have always been the club in discussion when someone is looking for a new home.

The issues run a lot deeper than Voss, but in typical Carlton fashion and with a fair w***er of a president, he will most likely cop it.

The most important people at the club to drive success are the prez, ceo, coach and captain.

The captain leads by example. Can’t speak for him setting standards at the club but those inside would know. Don’t think there’s a problem there.

The prez for me is still an unknown. He’s been on the board that appointed and sacked Malthouse, Bolton, Teague and Voss. He conducted a very dubious ‘independent’ review of the club that overlooked Andrew Russells depts misgivings, but sacked the CEO and Coach as a result. He did also remove SOS from his position and while the current recruitment team are a work in progress, this was a good thing to do.

The CEO is well known and accomplished. If he’s all in he’s an almighty asset, close to best in league.

The coach, well, that’s up for debate. Fumbled their way to missing the unmissable last year.
This year there are no more excuses. Not to make finals after a total rebuild for 8 years is inexcusable with the team they have.

AAs in Saad and Doc down back.
Key pillars in Weitering and Young (Carlton fans tell us how good this guy is)

AAs in Walsh and Cripps in the middle with a one paced but solid support crew.

TWO AA and Coleman medalist forwards up front.

They had 8 years to build the pieces around these very good players. Sure there are holes in the list, particularly at half forward, on the wing and in the ruck. But that is no excuse for a list this talented to not make finals. It comes down to the coach to extract the best from this group and he’s not doing it.

In saying that, nows not the time to knee jerk on this. They played a side a level above them last night in Brisbane and got beat. But they simply must make finals.

The one thing that will save Voss if they don’t is a lack of quality experienced coaches available at the end of the year. Hinkley, Dew, Simpson would probably be the pick of those being discarded. Unless they can pry one from an existing club. I don’t think they would move Voss for a greenhorn coach.

There’s no way they can sack him if no finals. Not a chance. Unless Longmire or C Scott say they want the job, he is staying. To sack him for anyone else is ludicrous. They’ve made their bed. It would also contribute to losing total respect from their member base and stakeholders. Successful clubs just stick with the coach and work around it, I.e Hardwick etc.

It seems that there are simply constant issues with fitness. There’s a lot of players not fit. Good medical departments sort this out really quickly, and there’s been some blokes absolutely coasting along. There’s a huge gap between Carlton and Brisbane on so many fronts.
