... the single biggest rivalry in Australian football?

I know there's longstanding rivalries between the big Melbourne clubs, but every time I tune into a showdown it just seems to radiate out of the TV... the noise and passion on display from the crowd and players is amazing.

With the players you can clearly tell this isn't just another game, whilst once the balls bounced in other rivalries I think it's more about the fans and it's just another game for the players. Doesn't seem that way in this game.

Having only two clubs in the city seems to really bring it out... it has a bit of a Glasgow feel to it (minus the history and violence of course).

What do we think?

Victorian rivalries are based on ladder position and recent history.

The so-called Big 4 rivalries are manufactured marketing tools. Those clubs have true rivalries when they're actually playing for something - like all other Melbourne clubs. Since they meet so rarely in finals these days they're just well marketed games.

The SA & WA rivalries seem to always be played as such regardless of ladder position.

Listening to it on the radio today, and Adelaide really produceproduced the '19th Man' through their supporters. Was fantastic listening, would love to attend a showdown at the new Adelaide Oval sometime soon while both SA teams are strong.

Crows and Port supporters hate each others guts and rub in showdown victories all year. It divides the state. I assume its the same for WA.
Don't think we quite have the same mass/volume? of hatred, undoubtably many supporters hate each other's guts, but quite often there's also some respect and friendship between supporters; based purely on what I've read on big footy the hatred seems more intense in SA

Well SA does have a pretty high volume of bogans & serial killers so that probably is somewhat where the hatred stems from.
