This week the old firm from Hawthorn said they were on the verge of greatness.

For years we've heard about the Hawthorn threat, how they're the best team going round. Yet again, they fell short. Hubris.

Been a few years since Chairman Jeff proclaimed a dynasty based on mental toughness .... a bit like claims of a Pie dynasty ... Di Nasty in the front office, hubris in the midfield.

Very Essendon like 'era' from Hawthorn, not sure if 93 or 99 is the better comparator. One premiership is never a disappointment but it will feel like it in years to come.

I actually had two Hawthorn supporters in unrelated situations come up to me in the last week and explain what a champion side 'because we've won two flags with this side'. Yes, they were assuming they already had it won this year.

That sort of arrogance cannot make you popular. As an old Geelong supporter, I'm glad that I learned very well how it feels to lose a GF before I had to handle winning a few. Hopefully a few younger Hawks supporters learned a lesson or two today.

Had to laugh at Rohan Connolly's article today on the rise as Hawthorn being a power in the 'equalization' era. He failed to mention that from 1960 to 1980, they were gifted a zone 3 times the size of any in the VFL.

Just an overrated club who has entitlement issues.

Fair point, in actuallity I agree with you.

But... in all fairness I heard a number of Geelong fans say how they were looking forward to the prelim match-up with Hawthorn this year before they played Fremantle.

I think there's always going to be a few in every crowd.

It's a consistent theme with this club.

I'll never forget 2010 when their fans were planning for the 2nd week game against Geelong as if it was a forgone conclusion before they'd even flown over here to face us.

Not just the fans either - for Clarkson to come out after we eliminated them and claim there were a lot of clubs who were relieved to see them out just smacked of a club who spends too much time drinking their own bath water.

Speaking as a hawthorn supporter, not I, nor any hawthorn supporters that I know personally, were going into today's game confident of a victory.

There's always some supporters who will talk up their team's chances beyond a reasonable level, and hopefully they've learned something today.

This.

Absurdly arrogant club that deserves this loss and more losses like it.

Yes, it is disappointing and you have every right to enjoy Geelongs superior record in that time.

10 flags in 52 years is not bad though (9 in my lifetime, I am still glad I chose Hawthorn, even though Sydney were too good for us today).

isnt it funny how all fans tend to dial in, a particular time line , to suit their argument. we all do it but it does get tiresome.
