Personally, have these guys not got the best job in the world???

Watch games of cricket in the summer time, stay in first class hotels (in Sydney they stay in a hotel over-looking the harbour), go to top class restaurnets (sp) and commentate for about 90 mins a day.

Sounds pretty good to me.

Personally, i think each commentator would be on at LEAST $100, 000 a summer. Possibly even up towards the $150 - 200 000 mark.

The downside is that you have to travel a bit. But really that is only minor.

DISCUSS???

Richie said something interesting? When?

James Brayshaw is what its all about.
Agreed. JB is all class, don't know what the man's other committments are but it's a shame only seeing him on SA games and not on Tests. He actually tries to make conversation. F**K channel 9 commentary is boring, imagine getting paid to do that.

Don't forget they'll get a 50% discount on Tiny Grig's magnificent framed prints (but still have to pay $49.95 postage and handling).

Charles Colvile who works for Sky Sports has the best job of the lot. He goes around the country and sometimes world meeting up with all the cricketers, I doubt there is a single cricketer currently playing the game he hasn't met at some point. He does commentary on 20/20 internationals and domestic games, and sits in the studio and watches the cricket for other internationals. And gets loads of time off to play for his club.

What a cushy job. Paid to watch and meet cricketers. Wish I had his job :(

Don't underestimate how difficult commentary is though. It looks easy, but it isn't. Try commentating to yourself when watching cricket on TV and you will see what I mean.

travelling is a downside, hmmmmm, a matte rof opinion i guess.

what about the talking and interviewing legends like warnie and lara and pollock etc...awesome !!

Wouldn't mind working as a free lance cricket journalist and radio commentator, that would be a good job.

Like Peter Roebuck, he has an awesome job in the fact that he spends some time in the commentary box and then jumps on his laptop to write his daily column.

I've got no doubt anyone on here could do a better job than the Channel 9 commentary is doing now. I know it's TV and they don't have to say much compared to ABC Radio's detailed descriptions but the coverage is kind of boring without much discussion. But these guys have something none of us have, reputations.

Sometimes I get the feeling that the commentators switch off the mikes for a while and say interesting stuff to themselves to spite the audience (you frequently hear Tubby turn down the mic when he laughs)

god the healy interview with hodge at the end so that they had a lead up to perth 9 news was a joke. Face it 9 no one watches your stupid lesbian news readers in perth and hodge speaks like a ********an drone blah blah blah stick to cricket mate

I MUCH prefer listening to the ABC commentators. What they say is much more interesting, there's much more variety, and they often have a guest of the visiting country as well. :thumbsu:

Unbelievably, I served Bill Lawry at my work in Subiaco around lunch time yesterday. I could not believe it. I dont know what he was doing there but it was definitley Bill. Obviously the nose was the first give-away but then he gave his little chuckle and the voice and it confirmed in my mind. By the time I got home, 3.30 Perth time, I heard him on the TV. Funny funny world.

Where do you work mate? I don't even know what Bill looks like these days, haven't seen him for a while on TV. ;)

How hard is it 4 commentators when IAn Chappell makes this comment with 10 overs to go in the day when SA are 5 down
There big worry is having Ntini coming in at number 11 he dosnt have a defensive shot
What a genious comment. That might be why hes at 11

Not correct.

Ntini is a better batsman than Langeveldt and its a matter of opinion as to whether he's better than Nel.

He bats alot like Harbajahn and Murali. He's better than Murali and probably not as good as Harbhajahn.

Mark Nicholas has to go....

His attempts to sound encouraged and excited when saying "yeeeesssssssssss, gott 'em" etc when a wicket falls is painful.

Micheal Slater though on Fox during the India series and now on ABC radio has been great. A breath of fresh air.

I like Mark Nicholas. He brings a different perspective to the commentary box rather than the usual old biased Australian retired captains that are there.

Mark Slater talks too much and his voice is abrasive.

I saw him on tele fleetingly around a year ago, that nose is the giveaway. I didnt pick it straightaway though, it was actually after he was leaving that it dawned on me.

I agree. It's an Australian telecast FFS, how many more non-Australian voices (and attitudes) do we need? Peter Roebuck causes me tremendous diarrhoea, and who is this South African guy on the ABC? Does he know anything about the game at all? If he does, he keeps it well and truly hidden.

I think Slater is very good and should go further.

I heard that South African guy - he is horrendous. By the time he finishes describing what happened (sort of) the next ball is being bowled. And no one has a clue about what actually transpired. Terrible, terrible commentator.

One thing about the Channel 9 guys. Yes they're mostly boring and repetitive, but you need to watch the excellent ABC doco "Cricket in the 70s" to realise how much Benaud, Chappell and Greig helped Packer during World Series Cricket, both the formation and otherwise. Because of that, Packer has granted them jobs for life. Actually during that program it was amazing how interesting and animated Chappell and Greig were without the Channel 9 handbrake applied. They should ask Chappell about Bradman, that's always entertaining.
