I have heard reports they get 100k a year, surely this is a joke? 100k! And then in selfishness they hold jobs outside football in markets which there is very few good positions (a popular one is teaching).

It really is small fry compared to what the players are on.
Given the years of commitment (just like players) that is required to make it to the elite level, the remuneration is far from excessive.

small fry or not, it is a combfortable amount to live on, yet they still have 2nd jobs. unbelievably selfish in my opinion.

Hardly selfish compared to the shit Fev was dishing up in contract disputes with Carlton...

If they have enough time to work a day job as well as umpire footy (which they do) - then why wouldn't they...?

Why is it selfish?

How do you know how many kids they are putting through school or any of the other hundreds of things they may have hanging over their heads.

Since when does someone have to limit how much money they can earn?

Absolutely ridiculous post.

So your saying Phil Matera, was selfish too, because he kept his trade business going whilst he played, so he had something to go back to when retired. Umpires are doing the same thing, twat.

Well said Merv, have yet to see a post from MM that is really worth reading.

Yeh, almost every weekend I ask myself :
'What are these umpires on'?

How much are the umpires on?

About two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half-full of cocaine and a whole galaxy of multicolored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers.... also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of Budweiser, a pint of raw ether, and two dozen amyls.

But the only thing that worries me is the ether. There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible than an umpire in the depths of an ether binge

Umpires derserve every cent they get for the shit they have to put up with. Why would you not expect them to have real jobs as well?? And how is it selfish, particulary those that are doing jobs in high demand such as teaching (as the person above says) and accounting (as with someone I know)?

What I would be interested to know is are all umpires (goal, boundary and field) on the same or are they on differing amounts?

Field umpires are earning a lot more that goal and boundary.

Do senior umpires get paid more than less experienced umpires, other than the senior ones getting more finals?

No. All field umpires get the same amount for a given match regardless of experience. Umpires do however recieve a bonus if they get to a certain number of matches during the year etc.

Without demeaning the integrity of any umpires....

In a sport where millions can ride on a game ( directly and through gambling ) would you be absolutely confident that a guy in such a vital position earning maybe 10k a year couldn't be bribed?

Certainly, that's not the entire reason for their salaries...They do work/train very hard and are the best of their trade, but it's another factor to consider.

10k a year? Try anywhere between 70-120k depending on number of games and finals umpired.

it was a hypothetical ... if they were only getting 10k a year, it isnt alot to keep them from taking bribes and such ... its an excellent point ... hadn't thought of that myself. i think know one with half a clue, which granted is the minority on this board, knows that they earn every cent of what they get.

I think anyone who is prepared to make the necessary sacrifices and put in the hard work should be rewarded if they are lucky enough to make it to the pinnicle of their chosen field.

The greedy call could possibly be the dumbest thing I have ever read on this forum...........and that is saying a lot!

The athleticism, persistence and skill to commit to AFL level umpiring is huge. Also consider the criticism they cop, violent altercations and the difficulty in attracting people into the profession, let alone all the money currently being plugged into the sport. Umpires maintain the integrity of the game and deserve as much as they can get. Just think about all the bloody commissions, media air and so on thats invested into the most minor of errors. Imagine if half the people in the country were talking about you short-changing Mrs Jones 10 cents at Coles?

On teachers though, they should be getting as much as they bloody want as well IMO. I sure as hell couldn't tolerate 30 kids at once for more than half the day.

The bloke calling umpires selfish is probably at home smashing a VB and waiting for the dole payment. Its called working hard something which unfortunately you see very little of nowadays.

Not even sure where to start with this, probably should have just shaken my head and hit the Back button.

First, most of the umpire's 'salary' is non guaranteed, so they would be very vulnerable if they didn't have 'real jobs'. No such thing as a 6 figure contract, blow out a knee and go through a year of rehab on full pay. Get injured, get dropped for poor form etc etc, and it goes from reasonably lucrative, to nowhere near self sufficient as earnings.

What is the difference what jobs they hold? Teaching is a popular one as a matter of fact, seems to be a personality type thing that a few teachers and lawyers have been attracted to umpiring over the years. More power to them trying to balance a full time job with umpiring, given these days they are required to frequently travel interstate.

What is the difference though between them having high paid jobs and a player owning a business? AFL footballer on $300k a year, buys a restaurant, pub or any other type of business and makes not only the normal earnings but probably higher as their business trades better than an equivalent one purely because the owner is a high profile footballer. Ditto the two Geelong boys I remember reading about that were doing a Personal Training certificate. Who do you recon a mad keen AFL follower in Geeling would go to for personal training...Johny Nobody with 10 years experience in the field, or two well known AFL players? Christ we even have AFL players (Milne and someone?) hiring themselves out as rent a friends or some rubbish, yet umpires can't earn a quid outside their NON GUARANTEED income!
