I have often wondered why Queenslanders pronounced Cairns exactly the same way as the French city 'Cannes'. After listening to the Lions club song which uses the tune of the French national anthem perhaps I understand. "Allons enfants de la Patrie, le jour de gloir est arrive....." meaning " Come, children of France the day of glory is arriving"

How would it be if other clubs had songs to the tunes of 'Deutchland, Deutchland' or 'God save the Queen'?

No it is not pronounced 'cans' - well at least by anyone I know up here.

There is a subtle difference and it is pronounced almost identically the way it is spelt.

It is pronounced C-AIR-NS as in adding the other letters to the word AIR.

It is sort of an 'short a' sound in Cannes, and an 'air' sound in Cairns.
