* Alec Baldwin is to be charged with involuntary manslaughter

Movie star Alec Baldwin has fired a prop gun on a movie set in New Mexico, killing cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and wounding director Joel Souza, authorities said.

The incident occurred on the set of the independent feature film, Rust, the Santa Fe County Sheriff's office said in a statement.

"The sheriff's office confirms that two individuals were shot on the set of Rust," police said in the statement.

"Halyna Hutchins, 42, director of photography, and Joel Souza, 48, director, were shot when a prop firearm was discharged by Alec Baldwin, 68, producer, and actor."

Hutchins died after being airlifted to hospital and Souza is being treated at a medical centre for injuries sustained in the incident.

The Santa Fe New Mexican reported that Baldwin was seen on Thursday outside the sheriff's office in tears.

Deputies responded about 2:00pm (local time) to the movie set at the Bonanza Creek Ranch after 911 calls came in of a person being shot on set, sheriff's spokesman Juan Rios said.

He said detectives were investigating how and what type of projectile was discharged.

I'm guessing it was firing blanks?

Apparently it was a live round

There are just no words for how stupid this is.

SANTA FE, N.M. — Alec Baldwin was handed a loaded weapon by an assistant director who indicated it was safe to use in the moments before the actor fatally shot a cinematographer, court records released Friday show.

The assistant director did not know the prop gun was loaded with live rounds, according to a search warrant filed in a Santa Fe court.

how quickly we look to blame ...
Clearly a workplace health and safety issue as it happened on the job. It seems there had been previous firearms breach issues on this set. Unforgivable in this day and age.

A lot of questions to be answered. Guess it will come out over the coming weeks and months.

Why are you aiming a prop gun at firing at directors? Are they in the movie, was it a scene to shoot them?

Why is there live ammo on a movie set?

Did the assistant director even check the weapon before saying cold gun?

Was the weapon faulty, are they conducting daily checks.

Hopefully some good reform and better rules can come from this.

He was aiming at the camera from what I've read... which makes sense. Directory of photography and Director standing/ kneeling behind it.

The live ammo seems quite odd. I also read somewhere that these guns are sometimes tested with live ammo to ensure they're not going to blow up in an actors hand when using blanks in them. But for that for happening on set, or anywhere near set seems bizzare, and a recepie for certain disaster.

Here's the armourer in charge of guns, 23yo on her second job, had already failed with safety when live guns went off earlier in the film.

'Hannah Gutierrez Reed was the film’s head armorer and was purportedly answerable for dealing with the weapon props.'

From what I've heard from her interviews she had no idea what she was doing and got the job because her dad used to do it.
