I work in the city and have been researching gyms in the CBD but as expected, none of them advertise their prices online as they want to get you to come in or have a phone conversation as they see abetter chance at a sale.

So I was wondering if anyone uses a CBD Gym (the King William St Fitness First and EFM are the most convenient locations but let me know others if you have them) and can tell me what membership fees they pay?

I'm not looking to join up for quite a while yet - I have been a member of a gym before when I needed to reach a fitness target for a job, I reached the target but then couldn't justify the ongoing cost. Likewise this time I have a specific goal in mind - in August 2012 I have a big European holiday planned and while I'm not overweight, I have been thinking that I'd like to tone my upper body up a bit for the beaches etc. I'm thinking 6 months should be enough time to get a passable chest/arms.

As a guess i'd say you'd pay around $700 per year for a club membership.

Have you tried personal training before? There is some group training like bootcamp before work that is good for cardio / toning. Good to shock the body!!

If you have an idea about weight training and can motivate yourself to do weights at home, a good bench and dumbells and a good program training 2-3 times a week will see you making good gains.

Diet is very important to gain size, and I'd start training now. ;)

I go to World Gym on Light Square. I think the going rate is $19.90 a week, deducted electronically every fortnight.

I was lucky enough to get a special rate of $13.50 a week, without a joining fee. The contract you sign at start will lock you in for a year. If you want to cancel/leave the gym you can buy out your contract for $100.

It's very much a weight training gym. Has Ivanko free weights and Hammer Strength machines. Cardio is a bit limited. If you like Kick Boxing, Paul "The Sting" Slowinski is the Muay Thai coach.

That sounds good, happy to pay $60/month

Yeah, a couple of years ago I had a specific fitness level I wanted to reach and joined up with Fitness First and had 4 x 45 minute personal training sessions per week for about 3 1/2 months. I could pick up what I was doing for that as in the end I was anticipating most things she asked me to do anyway although that was aimed at rapidly raising my cardio fitness not shaping my body.

I live in a townhouse and really have no room at all for any equipment.

I eat pretty healthy at the moment (although I'll admit that I usually don't eat breakfast and I know I'm bad). My current weight is probably on the lower side but still withing the range of what is normal for my height (191cm 75kg) so I don't really need to lose anything.

Last time I had a trainer she got me to up my protein intake and I also found I was hungry a lot more and seemed to crave hi-carb food like rice and pasta.

I now know a couple of personal trainers personally and am sure I could get one of them to do me a custom program.

I think most gyms will charge around the $80 mark in the CBD.

If you've got the time, patience and mental fortitute, the best bet would be to go into every gym you're interested in and play them against each other to get the best price.

Or just wait for one to have a promotional offer.

Cheers, I'll check it out. The others on King William are right near work though which would be really convenient.

What are the facilities like? Sauna/Steam room - do they do free classes at all?

$80 is fine too, I was thinking they'd be more around $25/week in the city so if I could get $80/month it'd be good.

I thought about going into them all but would rather not for the same reason I'm asking about prices on BigFooty rather than calling them - once they have your info they are very persistent. It was a bitch to cancel my membership last time.

They spent $3 million on the place and it only opened in early May this year so it has a very new feel to it. It doesn't have a Sauna/Steam room and that's World Gym's weakness really. It doesn't have all the other trimmings (pool, sauna, squash courts, etc) that other gyms like Next Gen or a Fitness First might have.

I use it only for weight training so it suits my needs. I do use the cardio stuff occasionally and all of that is top notch gear.

Yeah custom program is the way to go. It is important to train specifically for what you want to achieve. If you did personal training at fitness first you would have a good collaboration of exercises you could put together.

One thing I would suggest is to train is legs. An exercise like squats is excellent as it incorporates supporting muscle groups such as core, back etc. Also by utilising large muscle groups (quads / hammys), the overall gains all over your body will increase.

I was like most blokes that go to gym and only ever trained upper body. Once I started doing squats, deadlifts and general powerlifting exercises my strength increased a hell of a lot more.

Your "wheels" will look pretty staunch too when you hit that holiday in 2012. :thumbsu:

Yeah she used to get me doing squats and lunges with hand weights/medicine balls above my head etc.

Because of my aim at the time, this was usually done after running the shit out of me on the treadmill/rower/bike.

My hammys were a problem for me (and will be again) I am not very flexible and that was one area that I didn't see a great deal of improvement. We'd do a stretch down at the end of a session and end in that position where I'd lay on my back with a leg in the air and she'd push on it - that was my absolute least favourite part of the whole thing, it was agony (though made bearable that the person pressing on top of me was an attractive young female trainer...ahem:p ).

do not join Fitness First.

I used to work for them and let me tell you right now, it's a MASSIVE rip off. you'll pay in excess of a $1,000p/a + all the extra hidden fees they force you into paying.

just don't bother with them.

Can anyone offer any info about the Jetts Fitness centres that have started opening up around the place?

http://www.jetts.com.au/content/view/43/91/

Appears as though you get 24 hour access to any of the gyms?

....with assistance from qualified professionals during staffed hours....

What's the go if someone injures themselves out of "staffed hours"?

Not that Ive done any looking around yet, but $468 would seem not too bad?

Just starting to think about getting back into some gym, and one of these has opened up not far from home...

one of my mates has joined jetts gym (one opened up on the surf coast).he said its a 100 dollar join up and something like 10 dollar a week.they get you in.in staffed hours to see if you know what your doing etc.l would guess there is some kind of disclaimer about injury's out of staffed hours.is there any council run gyms in your area?

Come to think of it, there is a Rec Centre not far away that has a gym.

Not sure what its like, might look into that too....

Coincidentally, I walked down Rundle Mall today and there was a Jetts stand selling Foundation memberships (no joining fee and saving of $200 all up) to the one about to open in the CBD...

If you truly can use any of their gyms, I wonder whats to stop me taking out foundation to the one in town, and just going to the one near home all the time?

I know it's expensive but how much is Next Gen?

That is a rediculous amount to be paying. Better off just buying your own equiptment.

If you were willing to go to the Adelaide Uni gym that's a fair bit cheaper. I paid $150 for 6 months but I am a student so got it about 50 bucks cheaper.
