Okay, let's start with the stadium. Metricon Stadium (Carrara Stadium) doesn't have any sort of official nickname at the moment so there is one for people to work on. What about either end of goal? Let's look at the map before we name them.

I have heard commentators occasionally refer to the north-east goals as the "scoreboard end" but that scoreboard is going to be removed in the future so it isn't a well thought out name. I think without a doubt it should become known as the 'River End' given it's faces the Nerang River and the other end doesn't. As for the opposite end, Nerang-Broadbeach Road End seems far too long for my liking so something else will need to be thought of.

Obviously player nicknames is a big thing and that can be found in this thread. What about supporters that are unique to the Gold Coast? Well once upon a time there was a guy ( SUNS probably knows his name) dressed in a South Sydney Rabbitohs singlet that would walk down to the cheer squad area after every Gold Coast goal and yell "How good's (insert player that just kicked a goal)?" and the crowd would reply "He's alright!" Unfortunately, people complained and the stadium lost one of the few unique things it had. The only other personality I know of at Gold Coast games is a take on Collingwood's famous Joffa. He is named Jeffa and he wears an orange suit to games. Again, SUNS would know more but I believe he doesn't sit around the cheer squad area. He doesn't really do anything, it's just noticeable that he is in an orange suit when you walk past him.

The minutes countdown to the first bounce on the big screen that counts down to the tune of the guitar solo from November Rain by Guns n Roses is also something unique to the Gold Coast and usually gets the crowd pretty fired up.

Anyway, I'd like this thread to turn into a brain storming session of ideas that can be trialed and hopefully become something unique to the Gold Coast. I would personally be a big fan of a certain section of the bottom tier becoming something similar to Bay 13 at the MCG where they just heckle the opposition and develop a reputation for it, preferably near the Gold Coast cheer squad.

The club are bad. Really bad. They pay people thousands of dollars to come up with ideas that don't leave the ground (Chants, singalongs and just look back at "Wave your flags") Yet whenever regular cheer squad members or the general public come up with something the club try and shut it down straight away.

But for what it's worth the ends are known at the club as the river and road ends so you are probably onto something there.

Some of the Victorians on here would know of a great little chant we got going at away games in honour of our great leader Ablett.

When we tried to pull it at Metricon we were threatened with exclusion from the cheer squad area, because it is not fair on all our players to single out one player as 'the greatest player in the league'

We had a thing going whenever McKenzie got a kick we all yelled out boom! Despite being similar to a lot of other clubs cheers for players (think krruuuuuuz for Kruzer at Carlton games) we were shut down by halftime because it sounded like Booo!

The list goes on, but sometimes the club gets too caught up in their family friendly approach.

The "How good's _ _ _" guy was shut down because he was coming into the cheer squad area and people were complaining because he was not in SUNS colours. The excuse the club used to move him on was because he was drinking behind the cheer squad which is an unlicenced area.

Ironically the female who led the 3 person charge against our South Sydney friend is the one who adopted the chant the next year. It's her shriek voice you can hear doing it nowadays.

And has completely butchered it in the process.

Old mate has covered most of the bases but I'll try and contribute as much as I can.

Its is a shame because one of my favourite memories as a Suns supporter is the Essendon game from last year when Rory kicked a goal and dispite having laryngitis I found enough voice to do the "How goods Rory? " (That's Rory, Not Thompson you stupid... Grrrr) part of the chant.

As I've discussed with SUNS many times in the past, The best games are the away ones where the squad have the unofficial creative licence to chant and heckle and do whatever the hell we want. I gave the umpires some grief at the Adelaide game during one of my rare Home cheersquad appearances and was threatened to be thrown out the bay by our own "supporters" because I'm "not allowed to do that" (My response of course was to be even louder and obnoxious)

It's not all bad though, the anti squad we had going at the Melbourne game was good fun, Having a good bit of banter with the more social Melbourne supporters.

The kicking at goal for merch and giant ball relay is pretty unique I think even if the hosts (As terrible as they are, I'm looking at you Pickle) are reasonably commonplace now.

Wow SUNS, seems like a no-win situation for the cheer squad. Unbelievable that they would be so against cheer squad members coming up with ideas. At least you gave us some clarity on the river end and road end.

Jeez. Sounds rough at Metricon Stadium. Maybe it's time some of the supporters book out a bay close to the cheer squad and just do whatever they want. They can't stop you if you aren't in the official cheer squad area, right?

Last year for the Melbourne game a group of about 10 of us took some floggers, flags and banners that were made by cheer squad members not the club and sat directly next to the Melbourne cheer squad. The Demon fans loved the banter, the usual GA crowd who sit up that end begged us to do it again and there was no repercussions from the club . . . It was a GA area.

I'd be glad to do it but not enough people want to do it full time up there. This year I still have my SUNSCREAMERS membership but have also taken out Gold A memberships so I can get away when the politics start in the bay. Im there to love the SUNS, not argue and squabble over shit

If I'm not mistaken, every section up the river end (except for the section allocated to the opposition cheer squad) is general admission. Perhaps sections 144-147 would be ideal given it's close proximity to the bar/food outlet? Obviously the closer to the opposition supporters the better and banter is great between fans. SUNS, the 148 section is the opposition cheer squad area, right?

That is correct. And 147 is where we sat for the Melbourne game.

It was good fun but you need a small amount of people to commit on a permanent basis for it to grow into something awesome

I might be getting carried away here but I would like to propose the return of what I am going to dub (at least temporarily until a better name arrives) the River Rats in section 147. What better game to do it than round 1 against Richmond? Just one game to see how it goes. If it goes well then you can go about turning it into a permanent thing. The Suns have a winning record against Richmond and they would be perfect candidates for a trial run.

Of course you'll probably have to get to Metricon early in order to secure seats but I know you usually get to games fairly early anyway so that shouldn't be an issue. Now to think of some ideas for game day. SUNS how about you list off what you did/can do again so we can get a list going of what should occur in the River Rat section on March 15. Just in case anyone can't work it out, section 147 is up the river end of the stadium, hence the name River Rats.

You get me enough people keen and i'll do it haha! But even the likes of Big Red Machine wont come over, because he is under strict curfew from his adopted parents

So I guess that means there is no chance of you getting the same set of ten friends as last time?

Did you do anything else outside of banter with the opposition supporters?

A full stadium of Suns fans singing 'Black Hole Sun' would be pretty awesome. It's one of those songs that lends itself to mass singing.

You could call Metricon Konark, after the sun temple.

I actually really like how they play the November Rain guitar solo on the countdown. Love that song, great choice.

That girl who does the "hes alright" thing now makes my ears hurt. She puts me off ever sitting in the cheer squad again haha.

I've heard that a few times to, it's not the most pleasant of sounds that's for sure. It's good to see the Cheersquad getting into it but maybe there's a few other chants they could look at?

To improve the cheersquad you need 3 things, Time...Gasoline...matches...

Monday only strengthened my point.
