THS, would you like a wager on Goddard being signed before round 22? Don't take too long though, cause it might happen sooner than you'd expect. ;)

To be announced in the lead up to the Carlton game. :D

BTW, thanks for the move to the Dome (just to rub it in).

See if I can take you up on the offer after we give you a spanking next week. ;)

And before you turn your attention to Ball, the club are trying to negotiate a long term deal. It'll take a little longer but he's in the bag too. Not many left. Might be time to start looking elsewhere. :)

FG up at the end of this year also, as is black and powell.

not much clearance, though hammil is staying for less, frankie, I don't think will continue next season, moyle won't be here next season, and I suspect harvey and thommo will clear the decks at the end of 2005, which will leave about 600k room in our salary cap (harves on about 600 but vet) and thommo on 200k but not a veteran.

it will be hard to keep all our players, but I think we'll come close.

if black still wants to go, that will clear out another 300 to 350k from our cap issues, esp if he wants to go to freo again.

Aussie on the veterans list too.

The Saints are doing well to sign up these youngsters before they completely hit their prime, but it's to mainly 2 and 3 year deals. The **** is going to hit the fan when they have a group of 3 or 4 stars coming out of contract... for instance, Hayes, Riewoldt and Koschitzke will be coming out at the same time IIRC. That will be at least 1.5 mil right there, or a quarter of the salary cap, gentlemen.

It's inevitable that given the number of players the Saints have that are likely to be stars that they will lose a few in coming seasons. Signing them up early is a pretty astute ploy, get them recontracted before rival offers start rolling in.

What do mean "if". It's a done deal.

Wouldn't surprise me if Brendon is keen to have this announced early next week to shut up all the Carlton speculation.

There's a message in this for Carlton supporters.

"If" this is true and he does sign, I wish the young man all the best with his decision.

Ditto!

Great news for Saints and Footy in general.

Maybe Brisbane have set an example and other clubs (players) will follow.

Some loyalty creeping back into the game perhaps?

up to a point.

I think the thing for st kilda is IF and IF players want to go, st kilda has to trade for draft picks, as port and brisbane have done.

Ie if player x wants to go, st kilda must demand that a match draft choice is part of the trade, that way perhaps the inevitable aging process can be delayed.

North and brisbane as well as port have done this well. North is perceived as an old side, yet has refreshed itself reasonably adequately, brisbane is still relatively young despite its massive success and has been rewarded for trades of gram and headland, and port has usually traded well, stevens being the exception i suppose.

if a team wants a player, get a matching or better draft pick.

I'm not interested in playing childish games with you anymore, therefore will ignore the last comment, but will say this, "if" Collingwood finish last or near the bottom four, make sure you cross your "t's" and dot your "i's", as I see them as your biggest worry and not Carlton. We have the foundation now, we just miss a couple of posts to complete the building.

Quite so JD.

The message loud and clear is "I want to be a Saints and i don't want to play for Carlton"

Time for some Carlton supporters to concentrate on development of their own youngsters like Walker, and the young Irish bloke (Sultana something) instead of worrying about a bloke who is obviously wrapped in where he is playing and doesn't want to be dragged off to some foreign and unknown future.

Yes we know what the message is Jeff, don't let ego-driven dodgy megalomaniacs lead your club to near ruin.
:)

The message I was refering to is what I think is called the Donut Principle.

Focus on the donut and not the hole. i.e. what you have rather than what you haven't

good news for the Saints..

But signing them up means they Can't walk and the Club gets nothing...

doesn't mean the cap won't tighten so far that they don't HAVE to trade one of them

Any team that finishes on the bottom can have a crack at any uncontracted players, very true.

However the player to go for nothing is has to be very unhappy at the club and the other club wont trade.

If a player wants to go, well that the way of the world, it happens, but we will most likely get high draft picks for a quality player and given our fantastic recruitment of late, will ih all likely hood pick up another hidden gem out of the draft.

I admire your loyalty to the Blue cause, but do you really believe your club is only a player or two away from threatening for a premiership. That sounds a little optimistic.

Is this a joke? Surely you don't think Carlton have been focusing on Goddard too much and not Walker, Norman, Waite, Fisher, Thornton & co?

This is the same as the hamill thing. Mate just because i'd feel ambiguous if i heard the bloke snapped his knee in half (joffa note i said ambiguous not happy), it does not mean one iota that i'm preoccupied with him. Yet i'm constantly told to get over him. Mate i was over hamill the day i heard he did the judas thing on us. Doesn't mean I have to then like the bloke.

It's almost comedy that a saints fan is trying to lecture a blues fan on how to function as a success craving footy follower. You blokes wrote the book on failure, I wouldn't be at all surprised if Grant Thomas is copying the time honoured Carlton style of running a footy team in trying to get stkilda to a flag.
