Just heard AFL Victoria has terminated Frankston's VFL membership ending half a century of history in the VFA/VFL

One of the standalone VFL clubs that's been supplying a steady stream of players to the AFL is GONE!

Administrators were called in a few weeks ago, but hopes were high the club could be saved.

However, AFL Victoria has today terminated the club's VFL licence.

Paul Amy (Leader Journalist) tweeted at 5pm: "Breaking: Frankston Football Club administrator says AFL Victoria this morning 'terminated' the club's VFL licence. Stunning development."

Frankston had a close relationship with TAC Cup team Dandenong Stingrays and many players from the Mornington Peninsula and Gippsland areas would play for them in the hopes of being drafted.

The statement said it was believed that AFL Victoria had concerns about “non-financial matters such as the historical on-field performance’’.

The club went into voluntary administration four weeks ago with debts of more than $1 million.

“While we are disappointed with the decision, we were not in a position to give any assurances on matters such as the future performances of players,’’ Burness said.

“As voluntary administrators our role was limited to dealing with the financial issues facing the club.”

The AFL should step in here. This is crazy. They're the anchor for local footy for the entire Mornington peninsula (Stingrays the glamorous big one).

Frankston had been horrid but there was hope that the new facilities would resurrect the club. If Ye build it they shall come, they said.

Sad to see Frankston go, but unfortunately enough people and local businesses didn't get behind it in the end. The redevelopment only added more debt to a poorly run club.

Hopefully there are lessons learnt from this.

The 10 AFL Vic sides should just run their own reserves league while all the stand alone sides should just re-form the VFA.

Wondering if a Kickstarter/Crowdfunding campaign would make a difference. Im sure football clubs/supporters all over the country would know the issues of a local footy club and have some sympathy.

Sad news. I knew that they were in financial trouble and thought AFL Victoria would do their best to assist as the Dolphins represents the South East. Obviously not.

Hopefully if they cannot win their license back they can reform and play in another league.

I used to support them prior to the Box Hill-Hawthorn alignment and can remember going to many matches in the nineties when David Rhys Jones was Captain Coach -- loss to Springvale in the Grand Final was a heartbreaker.
