With a new album coming out later this year, and on the back of headlining the 2008 Soundwave Festival, I thought I'd start a thread asking you guys what your favourite Offspring song is. I'm not going to worry about a poll, it's not really needed.

I'm guessing not many of the members on this board are fans, as The Offspring are never really talked about on here, so let's see how many replies I get.

My favourite song from The Offspring is Dirty Magic, which is off of their second album, Ignition. It's a top tune, and the acoustic version of the song is top shelf as well.

Although, after hearing some of their new material, I might have a new favourite by the end of the year :D

Speaking of Come Out and Play, everyone knows that distinct guitar ditty bit that is played after the choruses leading into the verses, is that the same tune from that traditional and really popular Jewish song Hava Naglia?

I think it is. I'll try and find out more info on it.

Another song I like from The Offspring is Amazed, off of the album, Ixnay on the Hombre

could not single 1 song out as being my fav... they have to many great songs and yes "dirty magic" is a classic !!!!

also "crossroads" off there selftitled album is right up there...

seen them at soundwave 3 days ago (4th time seen them) and they have not lost anything from there glory days :thumbsu:

Has to be Gone Away.

Many classics though.
Dirty Magic
Bad Habit
Self Esteem
Amazed
The Kids Aren't Alright
etc...

despite a general dislike of much pop punk (blink sum good charlotte etc) offspring up to and including americana (bar pretty fly) is reasonable stuff there early stuff was great, fast and catchy. Personal fave song is either meaning of life or come out and play

The kids aren't alright, I want you bad and Self Esteem are three songs which were personal favourites for small periods of time.

I don't think much of offspring any more..

I really hated that song that was like..

"2 shots of jager,
and 3 hours later,
she was in the bedroom with another guy"

Unfortunately they do make a fiar bit of crap these days, but there are some gems hidden in the new albums. Splinter was pretty good - it did have the usual few pop songs but overall it was a solid album.

From what I've heard about he new album, it's going to be more like Smash and Ixnay, and not like Americana, CO1 and Splinter.

Reverting back to their old ways.

I think Splinter, CO1 and Americana gets criticism because people refer to the albums as the "Hit That album" "The Original Prankster album" and "The Pretty Fly Album", respectively. This is not the case, sure those songs were popular singles, and were more pop than punk, but that doesn't mean the album was poor. Those three albums have some top tracks on each album, and they're a great listen.

I don't know about that. It does sound like traditional Russian/Jewish type music with one of those weird horns, but I think that's all it is. Although punk rock cover band Me First and the Gimme Gimmes recorded a live album at some kids Bar Mitzvah, and played a punk version of Hava Nagila and used that guitar hook. Perhaps that's where you got it from?
But they also allude riffs from other bands (Me First that is) including The Clash, Bad Religion etc..

Yeah I've got the Me Firsts cover of it (as awesome as it is!) and as soon as I heard it I immediately thought of Come Out and Play. I think I may have it wrong

I used to love these guys. The 1994-1997 Offspring is undeniably superior to the 1998- version, though, as they were closer to...well...punk-metal (their tempo was often too slow, with some exceptions, to really be true punk - plus, their lyrics, at their most punkish, were hardly ever truly political or left-wing) than schlocky pop.

Their best song, IMO, is Come out and Play. They haven't come up with a vocal hook ("you gotta keep 'em separated!") that brilliant before or since. Plus, that instrumental surf boogie which bridged the chorus and the verses...well, that just sealed the deal! :)

To continue my campaign of mentioning Bad Religion at any time possible. The song "All I want" was originally Dexter trying to write a Bad Religion song in a contest between a few bands at Epitaph (the record label they used to be on also owned by Bad Religion guitarest Brett Gurewitz). It used to be called "Protocol" and was almost the same musically but had wordy lyrics much like Bad Religion.

The Offspring are so frustrating. They have a heap of really top quality songs mixed in with a bunch of shit of their more recent albums. Smash is a ridiculously good and consistent album though. Even though Americana was the start of their slide there are still some killer tracks on there.
