One of the most critical areas in Essendon becoming a finals threat is the oft-vented issue surrounding our lack of elite talent on our list.

Have a look through our lists over the years since Hird and Lloyd have retired and there’s not a player who has been close to that level of elite game-changing ability. Zach and Jobe have undoubtedly been elite players but not in the class of the aforementioned. Ryder, Joe, and Stringer all had the talent and demonstrated it inconsistently but generally underwhelmed.

So, looking at our current list, who are the players most likely and why? And what would possibly hinder them reaching that level.

A top twelve (excluding Zach who is our only elite player);

1/ Caddy - has the all-round game and the look in his eye of a champion. Is he too short? Will expectation hinder him?

2/ Durham - Inside and outside game has everything, and is a professional athlete. Does he himself believe he belongs in elite company to help him take the next step?

3/ Nick Martin - He’s a game-changer in that he gets plenty of the ball, breaks lines, and kicks goals. The upside for him, once he’s filled out his frame and settled into a role, is very high. Like Duz, he just needs to believe that he’s a top 10 AFL player.

4/ Elijah Tsatas - I’m bullish about him getting there. He just has an instinct to win the ball and take the game on. Will he refine his kicking within limitations? He needs to emulate what Robert Harvey did with his kicking.

5/ Harry Jones - I just keep coming back this guy as someone with all the tools to become a star. Does he have enough mongrel? Will he settle into a forward role in tandem with Caddy? Does he want ‘It’ enough.

6/ Sam Draper - I don’t think there is any player capable of doing what he does in our game right now. At his best he is explosive, inspiring, and a match-changer. But his bad is really bad. Will the penny drop? If it does, he still has time to be our most lethal weapon.

7/ Jye Caldwell - He’s an instinctive ball-winner who’s found the self-belief and continuity. Plus, you can see a determined will to be a winner. Will wear and tear cut him down? He will be a better player than most on this list but I wonder if he is too limited to ever be ‘elite’.

8/ Isaac Kako - From the footage Ive seen, he has elite attributes - low centre of gravity, reads the play well, instinctive goal sense, evasiveness. At this stage it’s too early to tell. Will he find enough of the footy. Can he take his game beyond the forward half like Ablett Jr did?

9/ Jordan Ridley - As an intercept marking, rebounding tall defender he has all the attributes and he’s been on the cusp before. Can he have a clear, injury-free run at it? Is it getting too late for him to reach his potential? I’m thinking he’ll never be a superstar.

10/ Archie Perkins - He has composure and goal sense. He oozes class as a small/tall. But has he got the capacity to stay in the game, stay focused, and be fully committed? He seems to drift and you wonder if that’s something that will always be there with him.

11/ Zach Reid - When I think of what level of elite he could be I am thinking of Harris Andrews. You can see it in his game where he reads the play well, is good overhead and a nice kick for his size. Is he too broken? And has he lost too many development years (especially taking into account the COVID-affected lead-in to his draft)?

12/ Saad El Hawli - My outsider or long-shot prediction. Looks to have all the attributes an elite footballer requires and he knows where the goals are. He’s direct and good overhead and has defensive grounding at VFL level. There’s something about him. Will he be found out at the next level? There must be deficiencies in his game to see him overlooked so often so it will be interesting to watch his pre-season unfold.

Who else on our list might have the attributes to give us another superstar of the game?

Looking at that list, how many of those guys do you think would be the best in their position in the AFL?

Hird was that good.

And Lloyd…

It’s depressing to think back over 20 years of recruiting to know that every other club has plucked a Fyfe, Martin, Pendlebury, Dangerfield, Gawn, Stewart, Bont etc etc and we can’t find a single player to match them. And when we potentially do (Daniher, Ryder), we lose them at their peak.

Draper will never be the best pure ruckman. But as a unique ruck/forward/burst midfielder type player he has no rival if the penny drops. He’s got a year or 2 at most or he’s wasted his talent.

Draper has the physical tools, but don’t think he’ll surpass the level of a Gawn or whoever follows him.

If he can be a Mumford type that causes chaos and makes our midfielders walk taller that’s ’good enough’ from a ruckman though, it’s not a position that’s traditionally benefitted from a superstar.

You lost me at Jai Caldwell and Sam Durham.

Literally the definition of guys maximising less physical ability with hard work.

Of that list Caddy, Tsatas, Martin, Ridley Reid all deserve to be there in terms of potential.

Disagree wholeheartedly with you on Durham. He has all the physical ability and skills he requires. He just needs to take the next step which is a belief in his standing as an elite player. And I’ve already mentioned Caldwell’s limitations. But he’s still only 24 and he is talented enough to be a Lachie Neale level player if he finds his mojo.

Where’s the love for big Cox?

Nik “Potential” Cox.

Unicorn.

Let’s put to bed the KPD guff, he’ll never be a big framed hold your ground monster.

What he has
  • Can cover a lot of ground
  • Great reach
  • Goes off both pegs
  • Competitive enough… still building that

What he needs
  • Right role & more experience
  • Did you ever hear big men take longer… 😣

Become the elite utility Blicavs is.

Ok, even I’m struggling to believe in my boy these days. Hoping he gets back on track for a good pre season to break out in 2025. Building to elite in 2027.

Will Ferrell Lol GIF

Dont mean to be harsh, but some of the names suggested....😞

Merrett obviously, he’s one of the best players in the league.

Ridley probably next closest but he plays in a position that doesn’t really matter. Intercepting defenders are a dime a dozen and you can get by with just a decent one.

I don’t see anybody else is is potentially elite yet. Plenty of potentially good players but way too early to say potentially elite imo.

The rebuild really starts now post Dodo, we’re in for plenty of pain.

Absurd to include Durham in that. He’s an aerobic beast, that is explosive into and out of the contest and can compete aerially. Is top 20 in the comp for physical attributes. It’s production and execution that he’s not superstar level.

I wanted to add Cox. I really did. I have always held firm that he will become something, but the number of flaws being exposed in his game are making me lose faith. He’s not imposing himself in the air and his game sense hasn’t improved. His physique seems ill-equipped to get to any perceived potential. And I’m nearly convinced that he won’t find a position to ever become ‘elite’.

He’s probably 13th on my list 😁

To soft.

If you want to talk about who is the best player by position then surely we need to discuss Andy McGrath? Could genuinely be the best small defender in the comp

Others who have the talent to be best players by position?

Nate Caddy has the swagger and natural talent. Draper could be the best enforcer ruck in the comp. Jordan Ridley has the talent to be as good as Tom Stewart. Fitness obviously holding him back.

I think Mason Redman could be one of the top half backs in the comp. Sort out above the shoulders and he could be anything.

Langford should be discussed as one of the premier medium forwards in the comp.

Of the young guys, who ?

Durham, Martin, Caldwell could be anything or they could end up B grade and nice players.

Are we going to see Langford and Redman jump to another level? Because, let’s face it, they haven’t reached elite level yet in their careers. They have each perhaps had one outstanding season. I’m thinking that those two and McGrath might’ve reached their ceilings. I hope I’m wrong.

Not that long ago I heard Mark Harvey say that he thought Cox could end up the best player on our list.
A year or two back I might’ve agreed. I’m starting to wonder if it was all wishful thinking based on some unique skills for a 200cm bloke rather than the package of a complete footballer

Langford has more goals as a medium forward than anyone else over the last 2 years. Even busted up he was only outpointed by Waterman this year.

Does that make him elite? I'm not sure.

But a bit rough to say he's perhaps had one outstanding season. Definitely had at least one.

Elite talent and or 'potential' elite talent - I'd have;-

Merrett, Ridley, Redman, Draper, Reid, Langford, Kako, Martin, Cox, Gerreyn & Clarke

But most of them still have lots to prove...
