Player Watch Dougie Cochrane APPROVED to be in Port's NGA, signs for Port Magpies for 2026

By itself it doesn't guarantee anything, but for Cal Twomey to then go on and say 'Signs are pointing to a promising development for Port Adelaide's access to Dougie Cochrane as an NGA player' makes you think there is more happening behind the scenes.

We’re certainly owed one given the ‘ehhh whatever’ acquisitions certain other club have enjoyed in recent years.

Have we missed out on many? Can think of Brad Ebert, James Borlase, JHF who we probably should've had ties to. Can't think of many more.

Is Rankine an example of a kid that could've come to us an an NGA, but rules of the time worked against us, but would now work in our favour?

It looks like WWT is Port aligned so this could be the missing ingredient. Dougie has spent most of his time in the Port zone even though he is playing SANFL for Centrals not WWT.
Think the Crows have Norwood, Glenelg, Sturt and South Adelaide.
We have West, WWT, Centrals, North.

The Borlase one was laughable, and I see they still haven’t closed that loophole either, as Carl Steinfort’s son was born in Finland, therefore…

The one I was thinking of was the Michalanney father-son thing (his injury prone dad had to play something like 25 league games a season in his final 4 years to make the 200-game mark), but that was waved through presumably because the Crows were historically awful.

Stuart's pitch to the AFL had several moving parts.

One-time Port Adelaide utility Stuart Cochrane has requested the AFL permits his three sons to be allowed to join the Power's academy program under unprecedented circumstances.
...
Their father, in a letter that has been revealed by Nine media, told the AFL he was "exploring (his Indigenous heritage)" for his sons' eligibility.

He told the AFL that recent information has come to light of their Indigenous family heritage from his maternal side and originated somewhere around the Riverina region, indicating that his bloodline may well be Wiradjuri.
...
In a further twist to Cochrane's appeal, he would need the AFL to go through and make a change to the zoning around encompassing the metropolitan areas of Adelaide for the Next Generation academy.

The AFL had already been reviewing the zones before Cochrane's request.

Im confused by it all- but I think the AFL back flipped on NGA drafting over Pick 40 rule a while back. Essendon got multicultural Kako early in the draft last year.

But in SA metro indigenous aren’t part of this rule, I think the APY lands were recently split up between Port and Crows - but I dont think metro has been looked at yet?

If someone is gonna know the next steps to lock in Dougie its Addy23
My understanding/confusion in this was always that Dougie plays for Centrals and so I didn't quite understand how his acceptance into NGA was going to benefit us.

But based on what I've heard now, I deduce that the metropolitan areas of SA are going to be split between 2 SA clubs in a way that gets us access to Dougie. I am not aware of the specifics though so take it with a pinch of salt because there's still a fair bit of water to go under the bridge. But as Cal says, things are moving in the right direction

Surely the Crows will be fighting the redistribution if that is the case.
