Daniel Negreanu has embarked on a personal challenge to attempt to run $10 up to $100,000 playing Full Ring poker on PokerStars.

Details of the challenge can be found at:

http://www.fullcontactpoker.com/poker-forum/index.php?showtopic=132216

Daniel will not move up until he has 500 Big Blinds at the next level, he currently has a profit of around $30 and is at the 2c/5c level.

I have decided to try and mimick this challenge... although I am just trying to make the profit he required at each level and then move up. If I lose the $10 I started with then the challenge may come to an end!. I rarely play Full Ring, so keeping the stats on PokerTracker for this challenge is quiet easy.

As stated in his thread there are going to be points where he re-visits some of his strategy.

Is anyone else interested in attempting to follow in Negreanu's footsteps?

Doesn't feel so awesome at the moment, cos the peak was $2700 :(
How long has that taken you and what has been your strategy?

I'm not sure why your worried about your peak because I dont believe there is a poker player in the world that can win every time. The luck element dictates that no matter how good you are, you will always have dips/losses/bad beats.

I've been at it for about a year. I mainly play shorthanded limit, which is pretty good for bonuses and rakeback. The downside is that profit is thin (even for the best players), and variance can be high. I also mix it up with the odd bit of PLO, sit n gos and other tournaments. Recently I started trying to learn to play NL cash properly, and may aim to play more of that as time goes on.

At limit, I started at 0.1/0.2 and then quickly 0.25/0.50. I played a pretty high percentage of my bankroll early, but am now fairly conservative (mainly to ensure I mostly play games where I have positive expectation). I play mainly 1/2 and 2/4 now, with occasional shots at 3/6 and 5/10 (when the tables are extra juicy). I've also played live 10/20 (AUD), and bought into live tournaments for up to $120. I managed to satellite into a couple of $1000 buyin tournaments, which was good experience.

Sure, absolutely, but a 25% dip is pretty severe. I'm sure it will turn around eventually.

Update:

DN has a balance of $45.93 at the moment. So a profit of $35.93 on his $10.

He made $15.26 at 1c/2c and has made $20.70 so far at 2c/5c.

The values are out by 3c for some reason.. unsure why!.

In around another $4 profit he will be moving up to 5c/10c.

you'd think that would have taken a few weeks to get there at least.

i'm doing the challenge too, in the first 4 day's i've made 27 bucks on my 10 bucks (played around 1700 hands so far)

Here are DN's results for 1c/2c:

I'd say there would be the "I sucked out on Negreanu syndrome" in the micro stakes.. so he probably gets a lot more action when he bets than what you or I would.

Yeh you'd think he would be a massive target sitting on a 1c/2c table with people playing anything just to try and beat him.

Negreanu has now moved up to 5c/10c but hit some problems already:

I'd say there would be the "I sucked out on Negreanu syndrome" in the micro stakes.. so he probably gets a lot more action when he bets than what you or I would.

Would he necessarily be playing as "Negreanu" online though? Do people know they're playing him?

He is playing as "KidPoker" the name he always plays on. If you search the Pros while he is on he shows up at the micro tables. He normally has a waiting list 100+.

Yeh everyone knows his screenname(Kid Poker) on Pokerstars, there is massive waiting lists to play him at the small limits

i hope he does it, then does it again with a different screen name so no one knows its home and see how much quicker/slower he does it the second time around.

one would have to guess he does it quicker. he wouldn't get idiots who just want to say they busted negreeanu trying to take him out.

In the long run yes, but you're going to get sucked out alot more as well with donkies playing stupid hands and hitting miricles.

He will get people doing that even on $1/$2 $2/$4 that's where it will be more beneficial to him.

TBH that would make it alot easier. Just be painful to take the beats, but i'm sure he is more than capable of taking a hit of $10 here and there :p

Would be interesting to compare that though.

of course he can afford it but not really in terms of this challenge where is only playing with 5-10 buy in's at each of the low levels.

i cant remember the exact rules he set himself but i dont think he is bothering with the 20 buy-in rule until he hits 2/4 or 3/6 or something like that....

so at these lower limits it's not gonna take too many crap beats to derail this challenge.

Daniel is struggling a little so far at 5c/10c:

Limit Hands Played Result Bankroll
