Didn’t he sell all of the assets that provided revenue? Short term sugar hit with long term consequences.
Short term sugar hit that got Victoria out of a spiralling deep recession. Victoria was called a “rust bucket” under Cain and Kirner. Remember State Bank? Or Pyramid Building Society?

Imagine still believing that selling off the SEC and closing schools and hospitals was a good thing
What was the alternative? A state in deep recession. Unemployment high. A symbol of the state, the State Bank of Victoria, lost forever.

Increasing taxes was not a solution. So what should have happened?

The current government has sold as many public assets in the past decade.

What was the alternative to gutting the state so his mates could profit?

Dunno probably not that

LOL. Sorry are you talking about the Andrews and Allen governments or the Kennett government?

How old were you in 1992? It amazes me that so many Millenials and Gen Z posters think they know what went on in the Cain / Kirner year’s, how dire the economy of Victoria was allowed to become.

Still waiting for your alternative economic plan

All of Australia was in recession back then and managed to find a way out of it without selling the family silver, Victoria could have been living high on the hog and Kennett still would have privatised everything he could get his hands on. It was pure Thatcherite bastardry

Right! Victoria was no worse than any other state.

Fact is no state was in as deep a recession as Victoria, nor did any state amass as much debt as Victoria did. Sound familiar?

When Kennett became Premier Victoria had an unemployment rate of 12%, way above NSW. In 1992, Kennett faced a $2.2 billion budget deficit and an unprecedented Government debt of $33 billion. The state's credit rating was AA2 in 1991 (compared with NSW's AAA rating), the first time the state ever received a double downgrade. It would take 6 years for the state's credit rating to return to AAA... under Kennett.

Talk about revisionism.

Dan disciples have nothing on the Kennett crowd and never will.

Let the record show that Gough does not believe Paul Keating selling the Commonwealth Bank and Qantas was "selling the family silver".

We’d had the worst recession in 50 years and you can’t compare VIC with other states at the time. A gnat could’ve guided the state out of trouble mid 90s when things picked up. Plus as per Lib tactic they exaggerated the state of the finances when they got in. He sold assets and that was all he had ..so was voted out.

I question the sincerity of most pollies claiming to support sports teams. Didn't ScoMo fake it? And Dan is a massive nerd, not really the sporty type from first appearances.
ScoMo was a blue blood eastern suburbs Rugby man - he didn't just change teams to be a populist wonker - he changed codes. And then to compound that he handed back his No1 ticket holder status the day it was no use to him anymore. Absolute fraud of a man

Conservatives criticise Dan for the lockdowns, then in the same breath criticise him for Covid deaths. They can't have it both ways. No lockdowns would have led to more deaths.
Easy. There are a number of ways to deal with COVID, with or without lockdowns.

The method employed by Victoria required minimal COVID in the community, and the methods employed to do that can be critised - including the deaths that resulted.

I would have preferred a method that allowed for more COVID in the community and which would have led to more deaths, but I'm still able to critique methodology employed while aiming for donuts days.

And you knew all this at the outbreak of the pandemic?

Yet Victoria had the most deaths with the longest lockdowns.

Go figure.
Which is actually pretty easily explained.

Melbourne has the second highest population of any city in Australia - almost the same as Sydney. It has the second biggest international airport.

Sydney, unlike Melbourne, is broken into relatively clearly defined and heavily separated boroughs, ie. north shore, eastern suburbs, western suburbs, etc. - that is why they were able to shut down specific areas where Melbourne had to shut the entire city down. Melbourne is much more centralised and much more mobile city and therefore has much more casual interaction from all parts of the city. People in Narre Warren were giving the virus to people in Thomastown.

Adelaide and Perth and Brisbane are much smaller cities.

And both times the virus caused major shut downs in Melbourne the virus came from Sydney.

Melbourne was part unlucky and part bungled. But Dan did not invent the virus and government did the best they could with what was a shit sandwich.

So you would have preferred more people dying so you had more freedom?

Per 100 people, deaths in Victoria exceeded that of the closest state by 40%.

'A much more mobile city' - where are you pulling this rubbish from?
