I thought Dunstan wanted to go on? He was getting some good numbers at the very end there.

I don’t know the inner story for either of these guys. I wasn’t following the Saints much until late in their careers, but the impression I got was that both players seemed to have a disconnect somewhere…

Dunstan

Was getting  high numbers when he made it back at the end for us, and I thought he’d go on on that basis. He wasn’t an elite kick or particularly quick from what I could see. Anyway, Richo picked him up for Melbourne (does that mean he was good? Or Ratten bad? I don’t necessarily think so) Dunstan managed 5 games for them in ‘22, late season when they had injuries. Then he played exclusively in the seconds for Casey in ‘23 before doing an ACL. He was 28, played his last AFL game at 27.

Long

Was explosive and had skills but all I remember, coming in late as it were, was the occasional cameo as a forward, a defender and in both cases frequently giving away costly free kicks or having very quiet days. He had a 12/13 possession game it was a good one. When used as a forward he got the monicker of a ‘defensive forward’ whatever that means. To me it means ‘second to the ball but good with a tackle’ and can win a holding the ball decision and kick a goal, but not a play maker.

I think Richo was too soft on ‘em, thus extending their careers, and then Ratts tried to ‘correct’ them, and by this time it was just Not gonna happen. Long didn’t play a lot at Gold Coast in his first year but ironically, after saying he wanted to play defence, is a very handy forward -it seems - up there.
