Correct,

Maybe it's a 700 pitch. Think of a number. ;)
Consider the Tests so far...

Perth 36 wickets for 979 @ 27.2
Adelaide 30 wickets for 711 @ 23.7
Brisbane 27 wickets for 822 @ 30.4

So getting 474 in an innings is still decent...

There really isn't any
There really is!

Todd Murphy has a better bowling average than Lyon. 21 wickets @ 25.42 in 6 games.

Reckon he would do better than Lyon's 3 @ 60. Lyon averages above 30 in Tests, which isn't great or not replaceable

So a VERY small sample size vs a guy whos done an incredible job for over a decade.

It's nearly time, and I'd play him in Sri Lanka but let's not pretend he's a sure thing.

I've noticed, in the last couple of matches in particular, the Snicko system calibration seems to be well out. On many occasions, the audio snick is noticeably after the deviating ball passes the bat. Confidence in this system will fade if this is not corrected. The third umpire seems to be aware of the problem, however, relying on his eye for the most part.

Since when is this a 600+ pitch?

When was the last time we scores 600?
When was the last time we had the benefit of batting on a road like this?

Lab, Khawaja, Head & Marsh all threw away their wickets. If they batted sensibly, then there's easily another 150 runs between them.

I agree that the batting has struggled against quality bowling in the previous tests.

This pitch is MUCH more batsman friendly than the previous wickets.

Best to judge once both teams have batted!

Australia shouldn't pick Lyon (or any spinner) for the games where they make a show of not/barely bowling him at all. A lot of other national teams would pick an extra pace bowler or an extra batter who can bowl part-time spin if needed.

As it is he's coming off three poor test matches, two of which are nothing to do with his form. Where one off game (brisbane) would have been less of a big deal.

Rohit scored 103 against the poms at Dharamsala, in March 2024. Since then he's scored:
6
5
23
8
2
52
0
8
18
11
3
6
10
3

That's even worse than what the Australian top order had done prior to this Test Match.
Would have been dropped instead of Gill if not captain.

Could pick the extra quick & play Webster instead of Marsh as a spinning option.

Unfortunately the Australian selectors are not very adaptable for conditions & form.

Under normal circumstance he would have expected to bowl a lot more overs than he has. It's just that the Indian batting lineup has collapsed rapidly almost every time, meaning that the quicks got through them before he was needed.

Lyon also helps improve the over rate, once the innings get longer, and we shouldn't be reliant on Head and/or Labuschagne to get through a LOT of overs.

Over rates could well be critical in getting us through to the WTC final. We lost at least 1 WTC point last summer due to slow over rates. The Saffies have as good as sewn up 1 of the WTC slots - the 2nd slot will be either India or Australia, and the gap between us is small enough that a point lost due to slow over rates could be critical.
