At a million a year for the next 6 seasons his contract looks like a complete disaster right now... But we've all seen how good he is at his best, a genuine superstar of the competition if he can get back in shape. Do the Dees try to push him out the door? Do other clubs come knocking?

Should have traded him last year when the out was there. Wouldn't have got a lot in return given the off field stuff but 6 more years at 6m is so bad. You're basically paying a worse version of Matt Crouch with off field issues 2x the money right now. Untradeable.

Tom Morris, who has Melbourne connections, reported he is apparently on 1.2/1.3 with the CBA uplifts.

Don't see how a trade could be worked out.

No one is taking the cap hit with the off-field issues even if you had to give up nothing to get him. So you'd need Melbourne to pay a very large % of his deal. But then if Melbourne are willing to fire sale him and do a deal like that, you'd have to wonder how bad the off-field stuff is and whether you're importing the plague to your club...

For most clubs a discussion around taking him on would be a complete non-starter you'd think. The only clubs that might be able to take the risk are Geelong, Sydney and maybe Brisbane with the Fagan factor.

At the time, of these crazy long term deals that are so popular with the clubs, you'd have thought this is one of those that were safe as houses given his age and output.

Clubs are going to keep rolling the dice on these deals and it will get worse and worse

Combined with the concussion issue's of players these days
could go very very bad very quickly

Given what we know about his off field stuff now (and what the club has said about there has always been issues that they have had to work thru with him) regardless of how good a player hes been on field the length of the contract was irresponsible, at best with everything going right you were going to break even, far more likely it was going to blow up in your face.

Oh God it indexed up?

That is dire

Same with the Brayshaw contract, giving out six years to a guy who was one hit away from retirement was irresponsible.

At the time though everyone saw Melbourne and thought they were looking at the 2008 cats. I sure did.

Drank too much bathwater after the flag and expected it to all happen again.

Even before this year Oliver had got progressively worse and out shape since the flag. Trac, Gawn and May the only guys who have played up to their contracts and two of them arent far off retirement, the cliff is going to hit hard right about when Tasmania come in, the absolute worst time to rebuild. Moving off Oliver last year when the opportunity was there given the contract was the right move, quite a few of us called it then and also said the Brayshaw contract was dumb when we gave it to him.

Giving Goodwin an extension just before another straight sets finals exit last year another horrendous decision.

It's getting to the point where Melbourne are going to struggle to find a suitor even if they cover half the contract. Unless he's completely toxic to the group I think they have to stick with him and hope he turns things around.

Id 100% take him at the Eagles as a salary dump. Would a better option then a contract til 2030 for Liam Baker

A tricky one. It may be best for all involved to part ways, but I can't see another club touching that disaster of a contract.

I reckon Melbourne are stuck with him. Hopefully he can turn things around, but it won't be this season.
It really depends how motivated Melbourne are to get rid of him. If he's not recoverable by them the contract will bury the club. If it has gone up to 1.3 as discussed then it's 8% of cap.

If he can't pull it together it will drown them

Some club will pick him up and Melbourne will have to pay some of the salary.

I just hope it isnt Collingwood, although no doubt we will be brought into discussions, as we always are.

Personally, I wouldn't take him for 3 years on 600k, let alone 6 on 1.2mil.

How much of Oliver's salary is Melbourne paying?
Who knows. Do we really need to worry about the minutiae of every deal? Which second and fourth rounders will be swapped?

Oliver > Warner > freos first rounders.

Melbourne get currency to rebuild before Tassie, swans get a warner replacement.
Why would Sydney want Oliver? Strictly inside mids are pretty much done in the AFL, run link up and goal kicking ability is what its all about if youre paying someone that money. Taylor Adams pretty much does what he does for half the price.
