Guys just a quick question, did Carl Deitrich play for any other VFL club apart from the Saints? I don't think so but someone I know is arguing that he had a stint with Carlton, surely not. Your input would be most welcome.

Re: Carl Dietrich

In answer to your question Carl Ditterich originally played for StKilda. In his first game he was best on the ground. Later he played for Melbourne before returning to StKilda. Later he returned to Melbourne again to coach them. Later he went to Gold Coast and lost his money in a property deal.:(

He was a superstar for the Saints and is a very very nice guy

Re: Carl Dietrich

Before heading up to the Gold Coast he was Deputy Principal at Swan Hill High School. His/his wife's family had a BIG legal stoush with Goulburn Murray Water !!

The blonde bombshell. :thumbsu: Last I heard was he was in further strife last year up in Swan Hill over water entitlements, facing bankrupcy because he was supposedly part of a group of trustees that owned the land rights.

Come to think of it that might be what Eastern was referencing. (I have family up towards that end, so heard it via grapevines)

Also a radio spot late last year with 774 Melbourne for anyone who also wants to listen, quite candid that was.

But yes, I also lol'd at the spelling, Dietrich, high in calcium and extra folate! :D

Re: Carl Dietrich

Yep to most of this thread, saints then melb. Got suspended for our grand final win.

Took over a pub in Brisbane with his son. It burned down after saints lions game and isn't running or may never run again and has been an empty shell for 6 months. Hotel Broadway.

Now back in swan hill

Re: Carl Dietrich

He kicked 6 goals on my dad when my dad was playing CHF for Box Hill Pioneers.

He said to my dad to stay out of his way or he would hurt him. I think my dad listened to him as otherwise he wouldnt have had six goals kicked against him playing as a Centre Half Forward.

Yes he was a superstar and is a good bloke. He was captain-coach of the Dees in his second stint with them.

Re: Carl Dietrich

He also went close to winning the seat of Swan Hill as an independant in the 1999 State Election, losing by just 1500 votes.

Little known fact that Ditterich was interviewed for the Melbourne coaching job again after Barassi left but they went with John Northey instead. Would have been some sort of record to return to the same club three times.

Here's something from an MFC perspective if anybody is interested http://wiki.fcmelbourne.com.au/Carl+Ditterich

"Ditterich was an enigmatic St. Kilda superstar who won Brownlow Votes in his first game (against Melbourne) but often found himself on the wrong side of club officials and the tribunal. It was said that on that day he had told the great Ron Barassi to "get out of the way old man".

I don't know if that if fact or fiction. more likely to be true though. My dad told me that Carl patted Barassi on the head in that game,, but Barassi who has a huge ego, later denied this when i mentioned it to him. I believe my old man, as I caught Ronald Dale out on another lie.

Re: Carl Dietrich

As a young boy I watched Big Carl in his first game in 1963. He was a product of my local junior football club East Brighton Vampires and Brighton High School.
He burst onto the VFL scene like a comet. He was athletic like nobody before him.

In 1972 I suffered a knee injury and consulted the same orthopaedic surgeon that looked after Big Carl (co-incidence only), Owen Deacon (his son Simon played in our ressies) and I'll never forget my first appointment to see Deacon when Big Carl walked out of the room just before my appointment. Deacon remarked that with his knees and ankles he was surprised that Carl could walk, let alone play football.
He played another 8 seasons after that!

He was truly a sight to behold on the football field.
We walked taller when he was playing.

Tough as nails who copped plenty and dished out even more.

Re: Carl Dietrich

anye QLD'ers have up to date info on whether the Pub is likely to be rebuilt- Last I chatted to Carl he was still planning it.

He Coached a bit of country footy over Swan Hill way too. A great mentor to young kids playing snr footy...:thumbsu::thumbsu:

Re: Carl Dietrich

Him and Phil Carman were an interesting combination at Melbourne when Carl was coach.

Didnt see eye to eye. To be a fly on the wall for those conversations.

He was the one bloke that Rotten Ronny Andrews feared.

Ive heard of blokes who have left for a team and returned but his swapping between Melbourne and StKilda would be like Tarrant returning to Fremantle again after a year or two at Collingwood.

St Kilda (1963–1972, 1976–1978)

203 games, 156 goals

Melbourne (1973–1975, 1978–1980)

Re: Carl Dietrich

A fearful man amongst men, twice took down entire teams by himself, once against Geelong and the other was against Carlton. Bodies lying at his feet, everyone too scared to come near him in the end. Awesome! We won the fights when Big Carl was there.

Jeansie once said that we would have got another flag if we had made the finals I think it was 1975. He had Big Carl, Jeff Sarau, Young, Elliott, Barker I think. Tough players, but it wasn't to be

In all the years I watched him, I only saw him stagger once.
Just before 3 qtr time in the 1971 GF, Porter (I believe) from Hawthorn punched him as he was running past (well off the ball). Carl staggered and even though 3 qtr time was only a few minutes away, he wan't the same for the rest of the game.
I often wondered if he had been 100% if Keddie would have kicked all those goals in the last qtr to 'steal' that falg from us?

So that was it! Bloody Karma always gets you in the end:mad:

My main question for many years has been, what part of the StKilda FC's soul was sacrificed for the 1966 flag? Especially when you see teams like Essendon wrack up flags with monotonous regularity, just a bunch of spoiled band wagon nobodies.

My belief is that the premiership party lasted 5 years by which time the talent we had assembled ahd well adn truly dispersed.
Other teams had risne, zoning had started to take effect.

We waited so long to win it, that the exhilaration of finally winning it took over.
The sense of achievment from Huggins on down was so profound that we almost went into 'euphoric hibernation', if such a thing is possible?

Re: Carl Dietrich

Is it possible to edit the heading of this thread so that Big Carl's name is spelled correctly?

There's something not quite right in a Saints legend's name being incorrect on a Saints Fan Forum.

Done :thumbsu:

Re: Carl Dietrich

He was the best school teacher I ever had. I was a bit biased as I am a mad saints fan but I tell you what none of the young blokes in the class you game enough to give him any lip!!!

I also remember the day he coached us in a school game. I was playing well in the forward line and fancied myself a bit. Big Carl thought he would bring me back to earth again and told me to go to full back in the last quarter. I groaned and that was it. He grabbed me by the jumper dragged me out of the 3/4time huddle and told me to piss of and have a shower!!!

the first collingwood game i ever went to was big carls last game - round 22 1980 at the G - melb v coll. i recall he snotted kevin morris and got many weeks, and the media were calling for him to be fined instead because it was his last game. the crowd were 'vocal' towards carl as you can imagine, questioning his parentage amongst other things.

**my first collingwood game should have been years before, but mum being a bomber fan wouldnt allow me to 'associate' with those pies people. that day i learnt why
