AFL Tasmania has today announced a brand-new women’s competition known as the TFLW which will begin with 16 teams across the state. Bridgewater, Burnie, Claremont, Devonport, George Town, Glenorchy, Hobart, Kingston, Latrobe, Lauderdale, Launceston, Longford, Clarence, Sorell, Ulverstone and Wynyard will be the 16 teams ahead of the 2023 TFLW season.

The Glenorchy Dolphins were quick to announce Dave Harding as their brand-new coach for the season, they’ve put together a bit of a young squad which Dave Harding is hoping will bring the northern suburbs some success.

Bridgewater has also announced Ashley Credlin as their inaugural coach for the season, the Bloods wanting to set themselves up with a winning culture. The other teams are slowly taking shape as well, as the first season of the TFLW prepares to get underway.

The Glenorchy Dolphins have been actively placing some footy clinics around the Northern Suburbs, while Clarence unveiled themselves as the Falcons this season. The Falcons have been doing some work in the Eastern Shore community preparing for the season ahead as well.

There is strong belief that the TFLW may look to expand next season adding two more sides into the fold, while these are unconfirmed rumours it could be that they are one northern and one southern side into the league to make it an 18-team competition.

AFL Tasmania hasn’t confirmed nor denied the possibly of even looking at adding more sides, they’re keen to see how the season unfolds before making any such decision. There was strong talk about the possibly of a North Hobart side into the league, while those plans could still play out AFL Tasmania remain tight lipped.

The Glenorchy Dolphins have today announced they have hired Dave Harding as their new senior coach for the 2023 season. Briana Narkle oversaw the Dolphins but was relieved of her duty as coach early last week and then the Dolphins went on the hunt for a new coach.

This is Harding’s first foray into coaching women’s football, the former Glenorchy Magpies men’s coach is looking forward to the opportunity to coach the Dolphins. “It’s going to be a big test. I am looking forward to it.” He spoke.
Dave Harding will be in charge of list management and setting up the Glenorchy Dolphins team for the up coming TFLW season. The Dolphins will be taking on archrival the Clarence Falcons away this week to open their campaign. There’s been no love lost between the two sides.

The Falcons prior to joining the newly formed TFLW had the wood over the Dolphins last season before both decided to join the Tasmanian Football League Women’s. The Dolphins missed the finals last season, but club president Levi Ward said that he was looking forward to working with Narkle again this season.

We’re unsure as to what has changed over time but the Dolphins have a new squad, a new coach and are hoping to be able to upset their rivals come this Saturday at Bellerive Oval.

The Australian Football Council have today announced two new teams are going to join the league to bring the new competition to s 14 team league. A team is expected to be announced out of Northern Tasmania, and possibly a new Victorian side to enter the league. Currently Melbourne are the only Victorian side in the newly formed Australian Football Council.

The league is keen to grow bigger and more nationally, especially with the recent addition of the Tasmanian Football team to the league. The Devils playing out of Blundstone Arena will be making their debut on the national stage this season.
It’s believed that the secondary Tasmanian side is going to be a Launceston based side, but it’s uncertain if the team will be an already made side from the local Tasmanian Football League or a new entity that will just arrive at the Australian Football Council.

There will also be a new women’s side that will enter into the Australian Football Council’s Women’s League as well to bring the teams up as well. Tasmania already having their women’s side in there as well. The belief is the expansion clubs will be named very soon and will be interesting to see what teams are going where in the league.

Glenorchy opened their season with a big win over Clarence at Blundstone Arena today, the Dolphins winning 16.6.112 to Clarence 4.0.24. It was a tight first half with the Falcons keeping with the Dolphins, until Glenorchy started to kick clear of the Falcons. Glenorchy lead the entire game, Jasmine Graham put the Dolphins on the board early and they ran away with it after that. At one stage the Dolphins held a 100-18 lead over the Falcons. Bella Watson had a massive day out for the Dolphins managing 82 disposals for the entire game, while Jasmine Graham booted 5 goals for the Dolphins to avenge the losses that the Dolphins suffered last season to the Falcons.

New coach Dave Harding rang the changes throughout the game, and made sure to keep the team fresh on the ground. For Clarence Ava Williams had 20 disposals for the game, Kara Adkins had 27 disposals of her own. There wasn’t many highlights for the Falcons from this game. They will hope they can go i9nto their next game with a better mindset to get back on track.

Goals – Glenorchy – Jasmine Graham 5, Evelyn Davidson 5, Daisy Taylor 2, Phoebe Walker 2.
Clarence – Tiahna Pettitt 2, Kirsty Willits 1, Ava Williams 1, Kara Adkins 1

The Tasmanian Football League Women has today announced the formation of a brand-new club to enter the league next season. North Hobart Dingos are set to become a brand-new addition to the league, as the league slowly expands beyond the 2023 season.

The Dingos have already confirmed their logo and the colours for the forth coming season, while nothing else has yet to be announced it’s believed that the Dingos are going to be playing their home games at North Hobart Oval from 2024 on-
wards.

AFL Tasmania are pleased to see the growth of the TFLW and encourages the additions of new sides as long as the talent is there for the leagues to be sustainable. Its also believed that another side will be announced in the coming days from the Northern region of the state.

It is believed that the team will be based out of Launceston, but nothing has been confirmed as yet, speculation will be rife in the league until there is an announcement. We’re expecting that it may come before the second round of the TFLW season.

It’s been an eventful few days for the Tasmanian Football League Women’s after announcing a new side for the league another side has decided to announce they’re going to be changing their name and colours. Bridgewater have today announced they’re going to no longer be called the Bloods but call themselves the Ravens and will be wearing black and gold from this weekend on.

Bridgewater are away to Latrobe this week, and will take their brand new jumpers and colours with them to take on the Panthers. The Panthers themselves had gone through a bit of a name change as well, deciding to remove the Phoenix name and colours and bring out the Panthers name and colours for this season.

Latrobe had waited until this weekend to also unveil their new colours and name because they were awaiting some new jumpers for the forthcoming season. They’ve arrived in time for their home game against the Ravens.
There is talk that Bridgewater may try and bring in a team into the TFL next season and beyond with talks going on as we speak right now.

Glenorchy took no prisoners at Windsor Park on Saturday when they battled the Launceston Jets, Glenorchy got onto the board early with a goal from Katie Juhnke and never looked back. Glenorchy would go onto defeat Launceston 14.8.92 to a disappointing 2.0.12.

Glenorchy never relinquished the lead against the Jets, with the Dolphins preventing the Jets any chances to score throughout the game. Katie Juhnke along with her four goals racked up 63 disposals while Jasmine Graham had 51. Graham also booted three goals; Belinda Faye also had a day out with a couple of goals as well.

Georgia Brooker had 34 disposals for Launceston, Victoria Harvey had 16, it was a tough day for the Jets with the Dolphins flexing their muscles and going into favourites for the TFLW flag after two rounds.

Launceston has a lot to work on, their midfield was working overtime, but they had no targets up forward, while Glenorchy had far too many for the Jets to be able to stop and get the win. Even worse for the Jets, Juhnke was able to get clear far too often in the Glenorchy 50 and she made the Jets pay.

Both sides were also able to get out of this game without any injuries, Glenorchy had some concerns but the little niggles that were in the game weren’t too much to worry about.

A last quarter fight back on field wasn’t enough for the Glenorchy Dolphins to get back into the game against the Burnie Wolves. The Wolves had all the scoring shots, but Glenorchy were unable to get themselves back onto the scoreboard, despite the tight last quarter Burne would runout winners 10.5.64 to Glenorchy 4.2.26. Katie Juhnke having 54 disposals wasn’t enough to see the Dolphins back into the game. Sarah Aldenhoven had 28 disposals and booted 3 goals to be the best for the Wolves. Glenorchy’s Matilda Thompson was also the workhorse for Glenorchy trying to keep them in it, while Jasmine Graham booted 3 goals of her own.

Aldenhoven gave Glenorchy so many headaches throughout the game and made sure that it was a nightmare trip for the Dolphins to Burnie this time around. Glenorchy coach Dave Harding was visibly irritated at the half time break and swung the changes but nothing seemed to work for him and the Dolphins walked away with their first loss for the 2023 season.
Goals – Burnie – Sarah Aldenhoven 3, Alana Carter 2, Ainslie Clare 1, Alana Rogers, Ally Bailey, Laura Mead, Emily Morris
Glenorchy – Jasmine Graham 3, Jessica Harrison.

Today the Tasmanian Football League Women’s would like to announce the formation of the South Launceston Rebels to join the TFLW in 2024. The Rebels will be wearing black, silver and red hoops, and will be playing their football at Youngtown Oval in South Launceston.

The Rebels join the Dingos in being announced as the brand-new teams to enter the ever expanding TFLW. It’s believed that the Tasmanian Football League are in talks to bring the Rebels to the men’s league for next season as well.

It’ll be interesting to see the makeup of the North Hobart, and South Launceston sides once they join the league next season. We’re working towards the possibility of more sides to enter the league at a later date for now the two new sides are the Rebels and Dingos going forward.

Glenorchy returned to the winners list in a big way when they bear George Town on Saturday, a massive goal fest from Jasmine Graham and Matilda Thompson saw Glenorchy runout winners 18.12.120 to George Town 1.0.6. It was a very long day for the girls from George Town not scoring until the third quarter and had to face a barrel of Glenorchy goals.

Glenorchy went on a run of 13 goals with Jasmine Graham booting 5 of them, Matilda Thompson with 4. Katie Juhnke was again a ball magnet with 51 disposals for the Dolphins. For the Sharks Claudia Roberts had 24 disposals, and Rachel Rhoden with 32.

The Dolphins were buoyed by a solid performance by most during this game and had a solid day in front of goal. The Dolphins next face Latrobe, while the Sharks are playing Wynyard at home. Despite the big win Dave Harding believes that the Dolphins can still improve in some key areas.
Goals – Glenorchy – Jasmine Graham 5, Matilda Thompson 4, Phoebe Walker 3, Katie Juhnke 2, Summer Lee, Naomi Hart, Ashlee Symonds

Glenorchy had a blowout win over Latrobe at Latrobe on Saturday, the Dolphins got off to a slow start only leading by a goal at quarter time before going on to beat Latrobe 14.2.86 to the Panthers 1.1.7. The Dolphins slammed on five goals to one in the second quarter to take a lead into half time. After the half the Dolphins started to get on top of the Panthers, limiting them to 1.1 for the remainder of the game. Jasmine Graham booted 7 goals for the Dolphins, with Katie Juhnke getting 68 disposals. Graham really came into her own in the second half piling on the goals.

Kirsten Compton had 16 disposals for the Panthers, which was a very quiet day for her and for the Panthers who couldn’t get going at all against a Dolphins side that took no prisoners. Kerryn Sierakowski kicked the only goal for the Panthers in a very forgettable game for them.

Glenorchy have enjoyed a 25-point win over the Kingston Magpies, the Dolphins started off a little slow in their game against the Magpies but picked up after the half time interval and runaway winners 6.2.38 to Kingston 2.1.13. The Dolphins held the Magpies scoreless in the first quarter, only scoring two goals of their own. At the half it was 3,1 to just 1 goal Jasmine Graham got the Dolphins off to the right start with an early goal, and then the Dolphins started to take control in a very low scoring affair.
Matilda Thompson was again one of the main ball winners for Glenorchy racking up 60 disposals for the game, with Katie Juhnke getting 47 disposals. For the Magpies it was Kiara Krause with 40, and Brittany Pitt with 23. Goals were hard to come by but both Juhnke and Graham managed to boot two each with Turley scoring the only goal for the Magpies.

Glenorchy were expected to get the win in this game, and they got it but they were made to work for this win against a Magpie side that refused to let the Dolphins get away with anything in this game.

The TFLW would like to announce the inclusion of a brand new side into the competition in 2024, the Brighton Bombers have been announced for 2024. The Bombers will be joining the South Launceston Rebels, North Hobart Dingos in entering the growing league.

The Bombers will be playing at Pontville Oval and will be wearing yellow and black when they enter the competition. Another side will likely be announced as an entrant into the 2024 season. The league wishes to advise they’re wanting to avoid the bye situation.

It’s believed that a side from the Derwent Valley could be on their way into the league in 2023, but it could be a team from the North. It’s not yet been confirmed as to where the team will be added from.
The 2024 season will be a massive season for the TFLW.

bridportseagulls.jpg

The TFLW would like to announce the formation of the Bridport Seagulls to enter into the 2024 TFLW season, we’ve been in consultation with the other clubs and gladly welcome the brand new side into the league next season.

We’re currently in negotiations to bring another two sides and then close off expansion in the league for awhile going forward. Bridport will begin the search for a coach, and for their playing list going forward.
We are looking forward to announcing the other two clubs to enter the league going forward, with so many clubs looking to enter the TFLW, we’re trying to not add too many clubs.

The Seagulls will be given time between now and the start of the leagues pre-season to get their affairs in order.

bridportseagulls-1.jpg

The Bridport Football Club would like to announce the hiring of Kaden Romero as our very first head coach heading into the 2024 season. Romero comes to the club with experience in other sporting ventures and coaching jobs. He will be the head coach for the next three seasons at the Seagulls.

We moved swiftly to announce our first ever women’s coach, in the hopes that we can begin bringing fresh and enthusiastic faces to the club. We are aware that things are going to be difficult at the club, with the team being new and bringing a new team together. But we are looking for the future, and excited by our future with Romero on board as coach.

We will begin the search for players, and bring the best quality we can to the team to help us with our 2024 campaign. Get on the Seagulls.

derwenthawks.jpg

The TFLW would like to announce the formation of the Derwent Hawks, who will be playing out of Boyer Oval in New Norfolk. The Hawks will begin the search of a new coach soon, but they’ve already announced their colours and their logos. They’re going to be wearing a green jumper with a red sash, they plan to look within the Derwent Valley community to bring their team together.

Peter Bamford is the heavy favourite to be the coach of the Hawks, if this was to happen it would be a good get for the Hawks with his history around developing young talent. Bamford has coached many STJFL sides and worked extensively in youth girls’ development.

Talk of the town is that the Derwent Hawks will be having a come and try event, and will likely look at bringing in many of the current crop of maturing STJFL talent from the area.

Glenorchy went on to demolish Longford 24.6.150 to Longford 2.0.12 at KGV Oval this afternoon, the Dolphins lead all day and run out easy victors in the end. Glenorchy started the game with 9 goals to nothing to start the first quarter. Jessica Harrison started the Dolphins off on the right foot with a big goal. The Dolphins would pile on the goals in the second lead by Juhnke and Graham. Longford finally got on the board themselves through Hannah Wintle, who went onto to be the major ball winner for the Bears with 37 disposals. Leah Hunnibell kicked their other goal for the game, and she had 22 disposals.
Katie Juhnke continued to be one of the Dolphins’ best with 7 goals, and 55 disposals, Jasmine Graham also booted 7 goals for the game. Glenorchy’s young brigade of Summer Lee, Charlie Moore and Maddy Harding all had solid games for the Dolphins. The Dolphins looking to send a strong message to the rest of the competition after some mixed form.

Glenorchy overcame Lauderdale in a tight tussle winning 7.2.44 to Lauderdale 6.1.37, the game was even throughout the day with the Dolphins needing to come back in the last to get the points over the Kangaroos. The Dolphins would find themselves trailing by 19 points heading into the last quarter before they started their comeback. It was lead by Matilda Thompson who racked up 41 disposals and kicking a vital goal for the Dolphins. Phoenix Walker had 28 disposals of her own, and came alive in front of goal in the last quarter booting two goals to see the Dolphins home.

It was the Lauren Shaw show for the Kangaroos, she had 36 disposals and booted 3 goals, when Ayla Griffith goaled for Lauderdale, it looked like it was all over the Dolphins as the lead went back out to 19 points in the final quarter. It took some magic from Graham and Bartlett to help swing the tide towards the Dolphins.

Walker and Thompson were working overtime to make sure the Dolphins forwards had enough of the ball, but they couldn’t make much use of it in this tight affair.

Glenorchy made light work of the Claremont Thunder today with Jasmine Graham returning to her good form booting 7 goals, with Katue Juhnke getting 46 disposals making it a big win for the Dolphins. Glenorchy won 15.5.95 to Claremont 9.0.54. The Thunder were in it early on trialling by 8 points but Glenorchy lead by Matilda Thompson with 50 disposals started to take control in the second quarter to slowly start to get on top of the Thunder. Eliza Hayes worked hard to keep Claremont in the game, she herself got 50 disposals but the difference was Graham up forward putting through the seven goals. She has been quiet of late, but her return to form helped the Dolphins get a huge win.

Ashlee Visentini the ever-tiresome worker also tried to get the Thunder back on track but ran into a formattable foe in Katie Juhnke who was helped by Kate Campbell. The second half saw Glenorchy really flex their muscles with Graham and Phoebe Walker hitting the scoreboard. Ellie Payne managed to get one back for the Thunder, but they couldn’t prevent the Dolphins kicking on with it and getting the win.

Maddy Harding showed a lot of courage throughout the second half backing into the backs and getting the ball going, she herself has needed to get herself back into the mix as she’s been quiet of late for the Dolphins. Ellie Campbell was strong down back again for Glenorchy.

Belinda Faye was quieter than she wanted to be but she managed to get a lot of the ball, for the Thunder Kate Mitchell, Jessica Coolahan, and Bianca Clayton worked hard. Rhiannon Cooke got 12 disposals herself in the backline, but she was thorough beaten down back today.

Glenorchy’s inside 50s were a telling tale as they had 47 inside 50’s and got 20 shots on goal, the Thunder only managed 14 for nine shots on goal. The Thunder had a small win in the ruck, but everywhere else it was a good day for the Dolphins.

Glenorchy managed to grab a 31-point win today after Ulverstone winning 8.1.49 to 3.0.18 at Ulverstone this afternoon. The Dolphins never trailed during this contest, starting off with a 13-point lead going into the second quarter. Neither side managed to trouble the scorers in the second quarter, Katie Juhnke was the leading disposal getter for the Dolphins with 56 disposals and Matilda Thompson was again one of the best for the Dolphins with 49 of her own. For Ulverstone Aliesha Tippet coming off the bench got 45 disposals trying very hard to help get the Pythons over the line.

Graham was again a force up forward for the Dolphins kicking four goals for the Dolphins, Thompson managed to put one of her own on the board. Graham started to get on top of her opponent in the second half. Emma Byfield got the Pythons on the board early but wasn’t able to trouble the scorers any further in the game. Bree Campbell and Charlotte Lim-Walters kicked one each in the final quarter, but it wasn’t enough to stop a strong Dolphin outfit.

Daisy Taylor’s goal in the last was one of two for the Dolphins but it came from a great passage of play that saw Juhnke trap the ball in the middle, getting the ball to Hallandal before Taylor snapped from the pocket to end a great passage of play for the Dolphins.

Glenorchy coach Dave Harding would have been happy to see Bella Watson, Madeline Thompson and Evelyn Davidson play well. Madeline Hardie got the best of Davidson in the ruck, however, one part of the Glenorchy game they will be wanting to get better on as they again were beaten in the ruck but still made better use of the ball all up in the end.

Maddy Harding had a quiet game this time around, starting from the bench she didn’t have a lot to do with the game neither did Phoebe Walker. Both seemed to be a bit down at training as well which saw them moved to the bench for this game.

A Glenorchy fight back sees the Dolphins steal a 3-point win over Bridgewater today winning 5.4.34 to 5.1.31. Katie Juhnke’s goal in the last quarter put the Dolphins in front in the last quarter, and the Dolphins managed to get over the line with a big win. She had 32 disposals kicked two goals, one of which became the winning goal. While Evelyn Davidson wasn’t able to get the upper hand in the ruck, she managed to kick two goals, and get 20 disposals.

Matilda Thompson stepped up again late to help the Dolphins get over the line, she had 47 disposals while Bella Watson was again a reliable cog in the Glenorchy midfield machine. Zoe Viney provided Glenorchy with many headaches on her way to 46 disposals, she and Maddie Thomas almost took the game away from Glenorchy. Thomas booted three goals. Her last quarter goal was almost enough to see the Ravens get over the line.

Aaliyah Hall with 29 disposals was another strong presence for the Ravens, she was a tireless worker but some poor defending allowed Juhnke to find herself in some space and goal. Graham was a little quiet for the Dolphins in this game, it was a very hard slug for both sides as they were evenly matched for most of the game. Neither side were able to get more than a goal in front throughout the entire game.

It was a tough second quarter battle, neither side were able to score during the quarter, Glenorchy outscored the Ravens in the third and the last to walk away with a much-needed win to keep them in the top four. The Ravens put a lot of tackling pressure on the Dolphins, but the younger Dolphins were able to stand up and get the come from behind win.

Glenorchy were far too good for Devonport today giving them a smashing 10.5.65 to 0.0.0 at Devonport Oval. Matilda Thompson got the Dolphins off to a great start with her first goal of the game and finishing with three goals and racking up 68 disposals causing the Eels many headaches for the game. Katie Juhnke was also a ball magnet getting 67 disposals. Isabelle Johnson was one of Devonport’s best getting 46 disposals off the interchange bench. It was a tough day at the office for Devonport with Glenorchy proving to be too good all over the ground. Sophie Holland, and Rebecca Walsh were triers as well for Devonport but couldn’t get on the scoreboard.

Devonport managed to hold Glenorchy to just two shots on goal in the second quarter with Belinda Faye kicking the only goal of the quarter. Evelyn Davidson managed a goal herself in the third, Matilda Thompson kicked her second goal in the third.

Katherine Ischenko managed to keep Jasmine Graham quiet with just the 28 disposals and no shots on goal, Graham would give the ball off a couple of times getting involved in other areas of the game. Courtney Swift only had two less hitouts than Davidson, who has been working hard on her rucking of late at training. Madeline Walker managed to take Summer Lee out of the game completely making it hard for Glenorchy to get goals on the board.

Noelle Werner had a bit of the ball but couldn’t get anything on the scoreboard for Devonport she was covered by Kate Campbell for most of the game, the Campbell sisters switched it up a bit later in the game with Kate’s sister Ellie coming into play on Werner as well.

Ellie Campbell came out on top of Maddison Bail, who had no real impact on the game for Devonport, nor did Brittany Hallahan. Matilda Thompson managed to get herself loose a few times and score herself three goals, it seemed like the Dolphins forward line was well held, but so was the Devonport forward line.

Glenorchy walked away with a 36-point win after a slow start against Hobart on Saturday, the Dolphins finished strong to get the win. Jasmine Graham put the Dolphins on the board early in the game but couldn’t touch the scoreboard again for the rest of the game. The first half was a tight contest, Glenorchy went into the half time break with a goal lead.

Lisa Norriss caused Glenorchy a lot of headaches on her way to 51 disposals she helped setup a goal for Kirby Armstrong in the final quarter which became the only goal for the Devils on the day. Evelyn Davidson booted both her goals in the third quarter to help Glenorchy lead 4.3 to 0 going into the last quarter. Matilda Thompson worked hard to win the ball, she battled Marijana Edwards throughout the day. Thompson had 47 disposals, while Edwards had 34. Belinda Faye managed 32 across centre half back, providing the Hobart forwards with a lot of work to do.

Emma Dalwood and Norriss were a formattable duo in the centre for the Hobart Devils, but the Glenorchy backline lead by the Campbells, Ruby Phillips, and Charlie Moore prevented any scores despite Hobart having 20 inside 50’s only 8 less than Glenorchy had.

In a quiet effort Katie Juhnke still had 31 disposals and Bella Watson had 30 of her own, despite not troubling the scoreboard Breanna Smith managed 30, Stacey Dunbar had 32. Kate Campbell was the better of the Campbell sisters for the game she had 29 disposals and worked hard throughout the game as well. Summer Lee managed to get herself a goal, Maddy Harding had a quiet game by her standards.

Overall, the game was even despite the 36-point margin, Hobart equaled Glenorchy even got ahead in a couple of stats in the game. Hobart’s tackling pressure kept them in the game for most of the game, until Glenorchy started to get on top in the second half and kicked clear.
Goals – Glenorchy – Davidson 2, Taylor, Lee, Graham, Walker
Hobart – Armstrong
