Andy Maher - who and why?

This guy has been hanging around no channel ten for 2 years now? Does a bit on SEN also, afl.com......infact seems to be 'andy everwhere' these days...

Exactly who is this guy? What's his claim to fame and why is he getting so much air time?......I can understand why he might get a gig on an AM radio show.........but the guy is ugly as sin, makes me want to throw up every time i see his mug on tv.....

He doesn't seem to know much......well not much more than the average punter......on the 5th quarter (or whatever its called) he's always having to ask "what was it like for you Christo..in that situation".......

So in summary
- the guy isn't an expert
- he doesn't have the voice or face for TV
- he's a bad host when he gets the shot (e.g. before the game)
- he doesn't break stories....
- all he does do is hype up the bleeding obvious (e.g. his love of the dogs is way over the top for a carlton supporter)

ugly as sin- yes, a head you never get sick of punching- yes, but i get the feeling that you could pound that face endlessly and the only thing out of shape would be your fist, his top lip would still perfectly hang out over his knees

Andrew has been working full-time in the football media since the late 80s when he joined weekly football newspaper 'Inside Football' as a staff writer. He progressed to be the paper's Assistant Editor as well as doing a stint on 'The Sunday Age' as it's Football Editor in the late 90s.

In 1996 he joined television production company Vuecast (now AFL Films)after it landed the contract to supply content for the fledgling Pay TV operator Sports AFL as part of the Optus Vision network. As part of its ground-breaking, Pay TV coverage of AFL football, Andrew mixed duties as host of 'One On One', the station's boundary rider on its exclusive match-day coverage and producer of its oft-praised Monday night show 'Football Feedback'.

He moved on to share Friday night boundary-line duties on Channel Seven's football coverage in 2001 as well as producing the highly-acclaimed 'Talking Footy.'

Since 2002 Andrew has been working as part of the production team responsible for Network Ten's Premiership, award-winning AFL coverage.

This year he has joined Melbourne radio station SEN 1116 as host of the Sunday morning program, 'The Insiders'.

He joins Anthony Hudson, Michael Christian and Stephen Silvagni as part of Ten's Saturday afternoon coverage as well as co host with Michael Christian on the network's Saturday night review show, 'The 5th Quarter'.

I like the guy. A much-needed antidote to the dopey ex-footballers he works with.

Who cares if he's never played the game at AFL level. If that's to be considered a valid criticism to be leveled at him, then none of us here have any right to talk about football in the public arena either.

I'd suggest that he got his break due to being Mike Sheehan's love child, but that would imply that MS got a root in the 70's, and we all know that there ain't no chance of that!

I think Maher is great...so what if he hasn't played?

Neither have Hudson and Grybas, and both are fantastic.

The professional callers are better than the ex-players in my opinion.

No one ever said the ex footballers are better callers, few of them can justify their positons either- Dwayne Russell found his niche calling hockey at the commonwealth games, he should now f/off to pakistan and call over there.
But Maher is just a walking abortion, no matter where I am when the football comes on, a groan fills any room when Radar Maher shows up on the screen.
