Poor decision but he probably followed his heart.

It is more difficult to get into AFL rather than cricket after retruning from a break.

how can you even say that, you don't see people changing sports to play cricket its a great decision the kid has a genuine chance to represent his country and now with things like ipl there is serious money to be made as well

Spot with these big 20/20 Comps you could make more money playing Cricket and make it Quicker then in the AFL

Probably an easy decision in the end:

  • You can earn a lot of money in cricket these days due to the rise of 20:20 cricket and the IPL. Even if he only reaches state level and does not represent Australia he can still get gigs in 20:20 tournies or county cricket. If you get to the Australian team you can earn serious money, particularly with endorsements on top also.
  • The lifestyle - opportunity to travel the world playing cricket.
  • Opportunity to represent your state and nation.
  • Longevity - cricket careers can be much longer than AFL and less taxing on the body (unless you are a fast bowler).
The cons are that the AFL career would of been more certain. AFL players mature at a younger age than cricketers so he would have more confidence at this point in time that he could make it as an AFL footballer than as a cricketer. A lot of junior cricketers do very well in junior cricket/Aus U18's, but struggle to break into senior teams and get regular gigs until in their early-mid 20's. It is very rare to break into the Australian team as a player under 25 - maybe one or two every 10 years.

In the end, he can still make good money as a state cricketer pinch hitting in the IPL/Country Cricket. Even if he could make more in AFL, he is at least following his No 1 passion and at the end of the day a bit more money isn't going to make much of a difference. Particularly if he had to move away from home to make it in AFL.

A big loss for GC but a great win for cricket and I'm glad he decided against football. That's one less gun they're going to get. And he's a KPP aswell. Phew.

My point is that if he doesn't make it in cricket in 3 or 4 years - It will be difficult to readjust to AFL footy.

If he played footy first and couldn't succeed - it would be easier to readjust to cricket.

Bartel says hi.
Making the junior state representing sides is nothing in the grand scheme of things. He was not in the mix for the junior national sides and was a fair margin out off it at the time when he turned his back on cricket.

At best Bartel would have been an average state cricketer. Very, very doubtful anything more then that.

*bump* I've heard through the grape vine that one Melbourne club have put the word to his manager to allow him to train with their VFL club, I don't know whether its got anything to do with him returning to footy or not, or just from a physical fitness stand point.... but where there is smoke.

Clue: Wiz Khalifa.

It is the off season in cricket, would certainly be fitness reasons, it is better keeping fit doing something you love. Keath played a number of state games this season, will push for higher honours in the next 2-3 years

Has had a few years and maybe hasn´t made the inroads into his cricket career as quickly as he would have liked, but then again most cricketers don´t peak until their mid to late 20´s (or 30´s for the Oz team).

I wonder if he ever considers coming back to AFL. I am sure there are a constant stream of recruiters checking up on him all the time.

Anyone heard much about him?
