AFP Commissioner Reece Kershaw today at an address to the National Press Club expressed dismay that AI has advanced to a point where law enforcement specialists are having problems identifying AI generated child sexual abuse material.

It's an offence to create and share this kind of material but investigators are faced with a real challenge now. When the AFP identifies child abuse material, an investigation is prioritised that can take weeks, months and sometimes longer to determine whether the child they are seeing is a new victim, if they're in Australia and if their life is at risk.

In the spring of 2023 when analysts saw the first renderings of AI child sexual abuse material, there were clear tells it was artificially generated, just six months later and it's become so life like, highly trained analysts are having real difficulties distinguishing it.

Perpetrators on the dark web are celebrating that fantasies can be made to order, all they need is the language to tell the software what they want to see.

Investigators are seeing AI generated child abuse material using the faces of known victims, they're seeing the nudifying of images of children whose clothed bodies are being uploaded online for legitimate reasons and stolen to use in AI sex abuse material.

Reece Kershaw goes on to issue a warning for parents and urges tightening privacy settings over social media, including locking down accounts in anticipation of a tsunami of AI generated abuse material.

AI is a powerful weapon and will only get better in time. Just think of how dangerous it could be down the track impersonating presidents with agendas causing global conflicts, free market control, or censorship.

AI in images now is not that difficult to detect if you know how to spot it but it will only get more difficult as time goes by
