Game Day AFLW Rnd 1 - Carlton v Collingwood Game Day Discussion

One week out - time to get the discussion rolling about the season opener.
How will our forward line function without Harris?
Who gets the job on Davey?
Who’s in and who’s out?
What are we most looking forward to?
Looking forward to the younger brigade taking over. O’Dea and DalPos still provide plenty of experience inside, but Maddy, GREG, McKay and McEvoy are going to complete an imposing group as they mature. Plenty of pace outside too, may give us a better balanced team than previously. Moody is a star in her own right and just needs a chop out rather than sharing time with Downie, have a feeling Jess Good may provide plenty of strength at the coal face. Our defence is the key Kez, Mua and Wilson provide plenty of strength back there.

As to your question regarding Harris, we will only miss her ability to draw a defender. Walker returning adds another level, pace from her and GG going to be critical(wondering if Poppy will provide a triple threat), with Vescio and Stevens having been the backbone up forward for a while now. We have some promising youngsters and a good mix to introduce them beside. Tipping we won’t go backwards, seeing our current experienced types as a better mix to facilitate a “hand over” to the younger brigade.

Davey is a dominant player, but McEvoy, McKay or one of the oldies can be accountable. They have to stop Maddy too, and I am thinking we are now better served for other play makers to step up if she is being double teamed.

Start the season with a W, then look to the challenge of the Lions in Qld. Was hoping to be there. Accommodation an issue as is the Covid explosion making this country boy and his girls think twice about a road trip.

Good wrap up. Took me a while to realise who GREG was(clever nick, cleverer than most footy club nicks lol). Egan is my big watch this year. Reckon she progressed her game last year and is poised for a breakout. She's getting a smarter footy game every game she plays.

I too hope that McEvoy can run with Davey. They seem to have similar skill sets, so it would be a good learning experience for Lucy, even if she gets beaten on the day. But I think she might be able to hold her own against Davey, with some help from the likes of Abby.

As I mentioned elsewhere, I'm hoping the focus of the team will be fast, precise ball movement this year. I feel like a lot of good passages of play in previous years were too often brought undone by a skill error somewhere in the chain. And with Tayla out of the forward line, they should be less inclined to bomb it long.

Downie was important going back in quite a few of the games last season. Height is definitely something we lack down there if a ruck-type isn't drifting back to help out. But given that it seemed to be a plan last year, I'm sure Harf will have something similar lined up this year.

I think Dal Pos will be an important inclusion down back.

Last season we leaked a lot of goals and possession through Nat Plane, who's listed as a forward but played down back a fair bit.

Wilson is a jet. Seems to have flow under the radar to this point. Will provide plenty of drive from down back. Looking forward to this season. Each one has got better and better. The older code hoppers have now pretty much passed the batton to the younger brigade that have had full pathways from junior footy. We should go pretty well this season.

Will be a good early guage as to how we'll go this season as the Pies will be in the mix for the flag. Our defense is the strength of the side - Harrington, Laolifi and Wilson with the intercept marking. Someone needs to put the brakes on Molloy who got a hold of us last time. Looking forward to seeing how we have evolved with all the changes.

Totally agree, Wilson will soon be known as a star of the game. She will ensure we do not miss the defensive mopping up of Al Downie in the last couple of seasons.

Yep, there's no doubting Charlotte's intercepting ability, she reads the play and the flight of the ball incredibly well. But she, Harrington and Laolifi are all intercepting defenders, and you'd assume Dal Pos will be used as more of a rebounding defender. Our defence lacks a Livingstone/Huntington type who's strong in the pack situation.

I think that's why Downie drifted back there last year.
