Mt Gravatt’s Mick Stinear wins 2004 Grogan Medal
Tuesday 14 September 2004
In his first year in Queensland football, 20-year old Mt Gravatt onballer Mick Stinear has taken out the league’s highest honour, winning AFL Queensland’s 59th J.A. Grogan Medal at a gala function at the Sheraton Hotel, Brisbane.
The win also establishes Stinear as the youngest J.A. Grogan Medal winner in 40 years, behind Kedron’s Tom Gould who was 18 when he first won the award in 1963.
The plucky rover finished the night on a total of 19 votes, a massive six clear of team mate and closest eligible rival, Damien Evans (13).
Southport goal–kicking machine Ben McEntee, who was ineligible for the honour due to a two-week mid-season striking suspension, finished on 16.
Stinear becomes just the second Mt Gravatt player to take out the honour, after Brad Jones won jointly in 1999 with Southport’s David Bain.
Victorian-bred Stinear was a rookie with Carlton in 2003, before moving to the Sunshine State this year with his girlfriend, after the Blues delisted him at the end of the 2003 season.
He played his junior football at Beaconsfield in the West Gippsland League, picking up numerous Best and Fairest awards throughout his junior career and became the youngest player at 17 to compete in a senior grand final for the club in 2000.
The pint-sized rover went on to play for the Dandenong Stingrays for 2001 and 2002 in the influential TAC Cup competition, both captaining the side, as well as being named the club’s Best and Fairest in his second year.
