On Tuesday afternoon it was confirmed both matches set to take place in Queensland for Opening Round have been called off due on advice from the Queensland government and Stadiums Queensland.

“Out of an abundance of caution and after ongoing communication with the Queensland Government, the Bureau of Meteorology and Stadiums Queensland, the AFL made the decision now to ensure the health and safety of clubs, players, officials and – importantly - the wider southeastern Queensland and northern NSW community remains the priority,” the AFL said in a statement.

“The AFL will announce the alternate schedule for these matches as soon as possible as we continue to work with clubs and venues on possible scenarios. The rescheduled matches won’t be played during Opening Round.”

The Lions are typically pretty slow starters; they’ve lost 4 of their last 5 round 1/opening round games.

The Cats have gone ok against them in recent times. Reckon they’ll give this a huge shake.

Has close enough contest for three quarters, with Lions running away with it in the last written all over this IMO.

Brisbane by 30 points.

Lions have a lot of underdone senior players hoping to be ready for opening round in 8 days' time.
Lions play the Crows tomorrow evening in a preseason game so need these players to have a decent hit out without injury.
I don't think the result will have much bearing on how the Lions back up against the Cats

Usually, we are hard to beat at The Gabba except strangely in our premiership year.
As others have said we also struggle in the first game of the season.

Lions by 10 points and that is just being loyal.
That Cats 2024 preliminary final was a ripper of a game.

It looks more and more likely that Alfred could be winning. Let's see tomorrow's forecast but today a lot of models predict landing Thu arvo just North of Brisbane as cat 2.

I wonder if they move it to Cairns or something. I’d be blown away (see what I did there) if this game goes ahead with potential winds and rain around 100km/hr. Even if it was cat 1 that’s still winds of 60-80km.

No chance if forecast is correct the game would go on. Yes, move it somewhere or postpone it to weekend or to bye (both Cats and Lions have bye the same week)? We should know tomorrow or on Tue latest.

You would assume that would be the most sensible option if the weather forecast continues to deteriorate. Can easily be moved to round 3 when both teams have the scheduled bye, there is only 1 Saturday night match that weekend as well - would solve the issue with minimal fuss
