Opinion AFL 2024 Round 13 - Weekend Wrap & Liked, Learnt, Hated

Well well well... Round 13 was plagued by truly bizarre umpiring decisions that decided some games. Oh and if somebody can tell me what constitutes holding the ball these days, I'd be really keen to know. Anyway... let's do some wrapping.

Crows v Tigers, Thursday night: The Tigers put the writing on the wall last week when they matched the Cats in Geelong for most of the game; this week they barged into Adelaide and left with a ripping good win! Might have put a severe dent in the opposition coach's career too.

Bulldogs v Lions, Friday night: Ah, THERE'S the 2024 Bulldogs I've come to know and love! Just when they look to be building something, they put in an absolute howler out of nowhere. Went into the game as favourites, came out of it with a 7 goal loss. To the team in 13th place. I mean when you put it like that...

Hawks v Giants, Saturday arvo: You might have watched the end of this game and thought that was going to be the most controversial umpiring decision of the weekend. Oh sweet Summer child! It only got worse, trust me. Still, that is now 5 wins in 6 weeks for the Hawks, with another winnable one next week. Form side of the comp and building something pretty special by the looks of things.

West Coast v North, Saturday arvo: You might have watched the end of THIS game and thought THAT was going to be the most controversial umpiring decision of the weekend. Again, you'd have been wrong. Anyway, to be fair it wasn't the umpire's fault the Eagles went down. They had kicked 2.14 at one point - that's where it was lost. I for one was happy for the North kids to get a long overdue win.

Saints v Gold Coast, Saturday night: Now this was the most controversial umpiring decision of the weekend. Imagine dressing yourself in an umpire's uniform and feeling such a pathetic need to impose yourself on the game that you find a '6 of one, half a dozen of the other' holding free nearly 100 metres off the ball to decide the outcome of the match. Are umpires failed actors who are desperate to be centre stage or something? Poor old Gold Coast were robbed of a well deserved away win. The Saints got out of jail.

Swans v Cats, Sunday arvo: The Cats produced a perfect reconstruction of the 2022 Grand Final… for a quarter and a half. What happened after that surprised even this over-confident Swans supporter. Powerful performance.

Bombers v Blues, Sunday night: The Blues are looking comfortably good enough to make a grand final this year. Very professional effort to set up a big lead against a fellow contender then cruise for the rest of the evening. A team going places.

Pies v Demons, Monday arvo: One team's stock is on the rise, the other is in freefall. The last couple of weeks have been abysmal for the Demons, while the Pies have quietly put themselves only a few percentage points outside the top 4. Can cause more than a few headaches if they have a clean run with injury between now and the end of the year.

Let’s hope the umpires get involved at the end of today’s game with a controversial free for Melbourne to win the game. Just to put a smile on everyone’s face.

Can't stand Melbourne. Hopefully it's the other way around.

Melbourne 1 point up, Crap 50m penalty to put a Collingwood player in range after the siren, only for them to shank the kick, get a behind and the game ends in a draw sounds good to me .......

Liked: The Hawthorn vs GWS game.

Learnt: Carlton almost certainly have the best tagging system in the league.

Hated: Adelaide were horrific. The powers that be still seem to be deluding themselves into believing there's a shred of competence at the club. The diabolical umpiring at multiple stages. I tipped 2/8.

Liked: Wearing blue shorts for a change, otherwise nothing.

Learnt: My fellow Cats fans are starting to accept the glory years are over, there are still some dreamers out there, but they are delusional.

Hated: Losing, wearing blue shorts in Sydney! Hawthorn winning, Collingwood winning.

Liked: My boys slowly on the rise..a few teams looking behind them thinking "oh crap..here they come again"

Learnt: (Always Known) Melbourne need to cough up to get a decent forward. Goal kicking yet AGAIN..

Hated: Not following my gut instinct had a feeling that Tigers, Lions & Roos all had strong chances....

Liked: Preparing to keep September free

Learnt: The competition is ordinary below Sydney

Hated: Teams with no byes playing teams coming off their 2nd bye. Dogs also cop another team off a bye next week. Should never happen

I like how Hawthorn are going, I reckon they could definitely make the 8if they keep going the way they are at the moment,

I don't think Melbourne are contenders for finals right now, I reckon they finish 13th 14th ish

I'm still with you on Hawthorn, but I don't see Melbourne falling quite that low - definitely not bottom 5. St Kilda has at least 5 really difficult games remaining, Adelaide is dreadful and the bottom three are just too far behind.

Liked: Hawks winning and just seeing how our group is really close including Mitchell

Learnt: Josh Weddle is a unicorn and the Dees suck this year

Hated: umpires having too much of an influence on the outcome of close games. Having games spread across 5 days especially during a bye round sucks

Liked - Finally getting a win, I forgot how much brighter the weekend seems after a win.

Learnt - Top 8 is very hard to pick this year, many teams still have an outside chance of sneaking in

Hated - Saints vs Suns was a very boring match

Liked: Full time siren for the Saints v Suns - my goodness what a drag that game was.

Learnt: GWS has far too many players with soft-tissue injuries and not running out games for it to be a coincidence. I think there is a fitness problem beyond the perceived laziness many (including me) are suggesting.

Hated: Petracca being so badly injured. Bye rounds and the inequity. Umpires, umpires, umpires....

Liked:
  • Collingwood just keep turning up, no matter who is in the team.
  • Watching Maynard not take a backwards step and continue with his aggression, after the unfortunate event of the last meeting.
  • The sea of blue at the Big Freeze game.
  • North getting the win, well done to them.
  • How tight the ladder is, good 2nd half of the season coming.
Learnt:
  • John Setka is a scumbag bully (well already known)
  • Melbourne are in decline in a big way.
  • Oliver's disposal has gotten worse (if that was possible) and has years to go.
  • Hawthorn's 2nd round pick, may not be as high as hoped.
Hated:
  • Tracs injury.
  • Trac being allowed back on. When do we save the player from themselves.
  • The end of Thursday night football.

Liked: North finally getting a win. Seriously felt sorry for them.

Learnt: Bombers are actually decent. Can see them almost winning a final this year.

Hated: Trac's injury. WTF dees. Pieces of shit.
Thought the bombers were pretty average until the scoreline began to flatter them in the end. Carlton were so much cleaner by hand and were out marking them everywhere. Their forward entries were almost as bad as ours.

Dominated all facets other than scoreboard accuracy other than a 15 minute patch in the last qtr.

Dont think theyre a top 4 team but theyre a genuine finals team.
