Well well well... Round 13 was plagued by truly bizarre umpiring decisions that decided some games. Oh and if somebody can tell me what constitutes holding the ball these days, I'd be really keen to know. Anyway... let's do some wrapping.
Crows v Tigers, Thursday night: The Tigers put the writing on the wall last week when they matched the Cats in Geelong for most of the game; this week they barged into Adelaide and left with a ripping good win! Might have put a severe dent in the opposition coach's career too.
Bulldogs v Lions, Friday night: Ah, THERE'S the 2024 Bulldogs I've come to know and love! Just when they look to be building something, they put in an absolute howler out of nowhere. Went into the game as favourites, came out of it with a 7 goal loss. To the team in 13th place. I mean when you put it like that...
Hawks v Giants, Saturday arvo: You might have watched the end of this game and thought that was going to be the most controversial umpiring decision of the weekend. Oh sweet Summer child! It only got worse, trust me. Still, that is now 5 wins in 6 weeks for the Hawks, with another winnable one next week. Form side of the comp and building something pretty special by the looks of things.
West Coast v North, Saturday arvo: You might have watched the end of THIS game and thought THAT was going to be the most controversial umpiring decision of the weekend. Again, you'd have been wrong. Anyway, to be fair it wasn't the umpire's fault the Eagles went down. They had kicked 2.14 at one point - that's where it was lost. I for one was happy for the North kids to get a long overdue win.
Saints v Gold Coast, Saturday night: Now this was the most controversial umpiring decision of the weekend. Imagine dressing yourself in an umpire's uniform and feeling such a pathetic need to impose yourself on the game that you find a '6 of one, half a dozen of the other' holding free nearly 100 metres off the ball to decide the outcome of the match. Are umpires failed actors who are desperate to be centre stage or something? Poor old Gold Coast were robbed of a well deserved away win. The Saints got out of jail.
Swans v Cats, Sunday arvo: The Cats produced a perfect reconstruction of the 2022 Grand Final… for a quarter and a half. What happened after that surprised even this over-confident Swans supporter. Powerful performance.
Bombers v Blues, Sunday night: The Blues are looking comfortably good enough to make a grand final this year. Very professional effort to set up a big lead against a fellow contender then cruise for the rest of the evening. A team going places.
Pies v Demons, Monday arvo: One team's stock is on the rise, the other is in freefall. The last couple of weeks have been abysmal for the Demons, while the Pies have quietly put themselves only a few percentage points outside the top 4. Can cause more than a few headaches if they have a clean run with injury between now and the end of the year.
