History has it that the game of cricket had its origins in the butter making districts of Leicestershire, England circa 1720's.
Starting one day long ago when the cheese makers challenged the butter makers, as to who had the strongest arm with the churn paddles.
They all gathered in a field outside of Whitwick in Leicestershire, dressed up in their cream calico aprons, after church one Sunday afternoon and using their paddles had a competition as to who could hit an apple the furthest, it was a sight to see.
Twas a jolly time that summer, a bumper summer harvest of apples, gambolling amongst the cows, crickets singing in the twilight and oodles of small beer. All summer was spent perfecting the competition and the word spread. A passing parson from the town of Sheepy Magna was prevailed upon to write down the rules of the game and officiate in the final judging of exactly who of these noble paddlers was the creme de la creme.
Word spread throughout the counties high and low of this summer pastime and it became an annual perennial.
Children started purloining the household butter paddles and stealing away to play with their friends.
Butter paddles came in pairs so they innovated by having two batters at a time.
The church railed against it at first, considering it a frivolous waste of time and alarmed at the frightening the cows with all those apples whizzing past their noses.
The farm owners, the local gentry were pleased however as the game led to breeding ever stronger paddlers in the dairies across the land, butter production was increased and talk of this game called 'Cricket' appeased even the most riotous milking hand.
'Better Butter Batters' became the catchcry for all and sundry.
Of course it wasn't long before the nobility got interested in what was amusing the populace of Leicestershire and beyond.
The Lords and Ladies started requesting that butter be served at the table in the shape of balls, in honour of this amusing game, that had spread peace throughout the silvan fields of Avalon.
Better Butter Batters is far from forgotten.
The Western Stars are a modern day reminder of the origins of Cricket.
Butter wouldn't melt in our mouths we've got some jolly good batters.
