Player Watch #34: Jack Graham - MOVED TO WCE - PICK 42 Received

Its unbelievable how some of our supporters in here wanted to trade out Jack. Jack is a very good AFL player. They dont grow on trees and he deserves huge respect for how he has gone about his first 50 games of footy. I hope we sign him for 3 years.
Don’t think it’s that unbelievable. He was in poor form hence why he wasn’t starting 22. He’s 22 and what if what we have seen from him is his best? He’s already slow and won’t get quicker. Maybe RFC might try and cash in while multiple teams are chasing him.

Every player goes through bad patches my friend. Riewoldt has Rioli
has Lynch has they all go through it. Jacks best is good enough. Hes played terrifically well in big game finals and he isnt as slow as you make out. He plays his role for the team, thats to be hard at the contest and the ball and the opponent. We have guys like Bolton and Castagna and others who provide the pace on the outside.

When you mention Rioli as part of your argument you have already lost.

The people who came on here and slagged of Jack Graham have been proven to be wrong. I understand they cant accept it. My argument stands 100%. Unfortunately we have supporters who decide to like or dislike players so they go on forums to stick the boots in. Jack Graham has stuck it up em and proved them wrong.

Must be almost impossible for clubs and team managers at the moment, with so little direction about list sizes and salary caps for 2021. It creates uncertainty for players out of contract and for teams looking to created stability in their squad. We have done a great job shoring up the majority of our players; we have 35 signed up players. When we do have a quality player such as Graham out of contract though with other clubs actively pursuing them - what can we do? We can't give him too large a payment or too long a contract without knowing what's coming.

I want Graham signed up now but how can we until we know how many we can have on the list and what we can pay them?

This will be the case for Nankevis, Houli, Aarts, Turner, Eggmolesse-Smith, Miller, English, Pickett, Broad, Markov, Riley-Dawkins and Garthwaite as well. All of their contracts end this year and while you'd imagine Nank and Aarts are as safe as houses, Houli will be given another year plus Broad/Markov/Pickett all given an extension, the rest are vulnerable if list sizes decrease.

been unbelievable since coming back , he feels a massive need for us and that is the tough inside mid, thats his best position, and he is actually getting more of the ball now too, hes tackling has also been vital

always felt his up and down form was due to being played in different roles and being really young, he will be a beast for us in the future

With Prestia, Edwards and to a lesser extent Cotchin missing games this year, it forced more responsibility onto Jack Graham. Hes grown massively as a player and also showed he much more than just a pressure player, his ball winning and work inside packs has been a feature. Gone up a few levels and we'll be a better balanced side for it moving forward

Yup - looks fitter than he ever has before.
Covering the ground a little quicker - really impressed with his last 6 weeks.

Must keep - piss off Carlton!

The Blues are paying $900k pa for Zac Williams, to go with $800k McGovern and $650k Jack Martin. So they won’t be getting JGTI. Some of the worst list management you could ever wish to see.

Really irresponsible spending of money. It makes me sick to think that is a reasonable amount to be paying players. While football departments will supposedly have to reduce in numbers, for players to be signed up on that sort of money is ridiculous. And then clubs cry poor - well, it just doesn't sit too well with me.

I think all clubs need to spend more or less the same on players McTiger. And most clubs will have half a dozen or so players on these type of deals. It just comes down to who you give those deals to....

Proven, durable top quality players with plenty of miles left in their legs....or:

113 games in 8 seasons, including 82 in the last 5 seasons, 26yo unproven over a long spell in the midfield going to be 28+ before he realistically can play finals for you Zac Williams

76 games in 5 seasons very similar age 3rd tall forward 11 scoring shots in 12 games 2020 season Mitch McGovern

112 in 7 seasons similar age 16 possession under a goal a game average Jack Martin.

Right now, you would bet against the Blues making finals next year. At best they look like hitting finals in 2021 and if that is the case all 3 will be approaching 28 years of age as they play their first final for the club. It might leave them with a tiny window at the very end of their careers to possibly scrape any genuine tilt at a flag. None are known for leadership qualities. None come from clubs with any recent history of ultimate success. They all have operative averages of about 15-16 matches per season, so none have a history of durability.

The Blues if they are ultimately to be any good will also have to accomodate Cripps, McKay, Charlie Curnow, Weitering, Walsh, Docherty, maybe even de Koning on big money deals. It is going to be fun watching Carlton try to hang on to all of them while accomodating Williams, McGovern and Martin.

Martin was hugely front loaded and paid almost $2m this season. He will now revert to about $300k per season. Anything at all upsets him and he will either stop trying or if he is playing well other clubs will come with tempting offers and he will want out. I am very glad Richmond don’t do business like that.

I've got a dumb question....because he is out of contract, can we still trade? Not that I think we should - but if our hand is forced?

He is still 22 with alot of upside, would want a good player for him.

Yes, but we are more limited in some ways than if he was in contract.

Basically if he wants to he can go into the draft. Then it's a lottery who picks him up. I cannot see Graham, or any of our players, putting a gun to our head right now. And the player basically is taking their chance where they end up - North quite likely.
