Dane Rampe was denied at several drafts and didn’t land a spot on an AFL list until the age of 22. But ever since being rookie-listed in November 2012, the key defender has seized his opportunity. Rampe made his AFL debut in Round 1, 2013 and played his 150th match in 2019. He’s an All Australian, an emergency for the greatest NSW team of all time and a Bob Skilton medallist, and he’s led the Swans as a co-captain with Josh Kennedy and Luke Parker since 2019. It doesn’t matter if the opposition’s best forward is a tall or small; so versatile and reliable is Rampe that he’s always assigned to the toughest task in defence. Draft history: 2013 Rookie Draft selection (Sydney) No. 37; 2013 AFL draft rookie elevation (Sydney) selection No. 90.

I think Rampe should come back via the 2's when he's ready. The backline is performing well and I'd rather he be able to regain some fitness without the added pressure of playing seniors.

Vintage Rampe. Was a general out there. Transitioned back into the team seamlessly and played a blinder when we needed him against top opposition (especially after McCartin went down and, later, Melican tweaked his ankle).

I think having a couple of weeks off in the middle of the season actually helped him! Not what I was expecting...

Perhaps Horse will consider giving him 3 weeks off in late July/August to ensure he is cherry ripe for the finals!

I think hes been back closer to his best this year in the games hes played. Thought it was passing him by a bit last year.

I wanted him to make his way back via the 2's on the account that the backline was going well in his absence.

I was wrong.

Not only did he play as if he was in the prime of his career, but the backline was obviously stronger for him being part of it.

And if Rampe hadn't played, who knows how well we would have been able to cover for McCartin going down.
