We now have two of the top five players in terms of goals per game from this year's talent league on our list.

I still have no idea what sort of career McLachlan is going to have. Just knows how to kick goals, but how does he get into our best 22? I just don't see it. Projects like a Breust to me - hope he gets a chance to debut in 2025.

We lost a few that got stuck behind the 'log jam' that saw opportunity else where like Gram that went to Richmond, Hadley was it that went to Carlton and there was a bloke that went to Sydney that had a long run there as well in their backline.

It's what Leigh Matthews warned the board about at the time, "if we go for glory and keep the team together we fall off a cliff for years loosing the development players".

I remember around the time Wayne Bennet was coaching the Broncos and he was ruthless getting rid of his stars before they finished their careers to keep the up and coming players. He sent Wally Lewis, Lazarus, Gilmister, Jackson and others on their way cleaning out his top end with a year or 2 left in their careers. He wrote about it in his book.

The Lions have so much talent now, maybe there is a time to let some go where we have good ones coming through to give us longer at the top. Mind you there could be 3 retirements next year (Zorko, Lester, McCarthy) that will take the lid off for a few. I think our recruiting team have a great long term view now and stick to that.

I think losing Daniher is our version of moving King Wally so we can thank Joe for making the decision for us 🙏

I don’t think any of those three will put their hand up to retire at the end of 2025 - not if they’re in form and when we’re in the hunt for flags

That said, I feel like Doedee will take Lester’s role when fit and Lohmann’s emergence will mean McCarthy will have to work hard and play well to go around again

Hard to say with Zorks, Coleman’s injury means he’ll get the starting gig again and if he plays like he did this year, it would be hard to push him out…especially if he plays for pennies

Obviously Dev and McKenna are vulnerable but I think Zac Bailey might also be one who struggles as Marshall, Ashcroft and Big Bad Bruce put pressure on best 22

I wonder who

Can't profess to seeing a huge amount of him, but to me he looks like a Linc replacement. Of course Linc wasn't in the GF side, so....

Would say he's more of a high IQ marking and goal kicking target than Linc, but doesn't have Lincs ability to pressure or contest at ground level.

Agree with most of that... although I really like Zac Bailey, he offers something different eg. pace, x factor, IMO he was good in finals this season, only a few mistakes off being up there with the likes of Ashcroft, Neale, Ah Chee, Daniher, Dunkley as our best finals players in a Premiership season.

Cal Twomey looking ahead to next years draft already >

https://www.afl.com.au/news/1256448...among-the-10-draft-prospects-to-watch-in-2025

Daniel Annable

Midfielder
183cm
5/4/07
Brisbane Academy/QLD

One of the gun midfielders in the crop for next year, Annable already has already proven his qualities. He dominated as a ball-getter for the Lions' Academy in the Coates Talent League this year, averaging 28 disposals and six tackles whilst also averaging 20 disposals playing for the Allies at the national carnival. He uses the ball well, has great game craft and is able to ferry the ball out of contested situations with his hands. Brisbane has another talented Academy product on the horizon.

Looking at that we do actually have the edge of too many tall forwards for them to get enough game time (assuming everyone is fit).

Day, Smith, Lloyd, Gallop and Ryan competing for one spot in the seniors and then 3 spots in the two's.
Henry should get first dibs at being third tall. It'll leave Day, Lloyd, Gallop as the 3 talls in VFL and Fort doing ruckwork.

I still don’t understand all the hoohaa over the Academies from VIC Clubs.
The more top end Academy talent we and other clubs take the more VIC players are left in the pool for VIC clubs.

The most obvious answer is, we're not going to be able to keep everyone we want due to the salary cap, unless they've all agreed to take unders to keep the squad together.

Charlie is locked away until 2028 (not very Leigh Matthews/Wayne Bennett of us), Rayner until 2031, and Lohmann I'd imagine is a priority re-signing, but every small and medium forward after them is a potential cap casualty at some point. McCarthy will be 32 when his contract is up next year and will likely retire or be moved on. Ah Chee will be 28 when his contract is up next year, and Bailey 27 when his contract is up in 2026. Possible one of them departs too.

The key is that people need to let go of the notion that the draft is something that's meant to be conducted in reverse ladder order. As soon as people, wherever they are and whatever their point of view, are able to let go of that notion, and see the draft as a store of currency (ie draft points), people will be much more comfortable with the northern academies. Particularly now that the southern academies are being afforded the same liberties with respect to bidding etc, as they should be.

Its absolutely unwarranted hysteria led by a vocal minority; which I guess is the case most times.

In this year's draft, 51 kids from the elite Victorian u/18 clubs were drafted, which includes Levi and Marshall. Only 10 kids from WA and 12 from SA were taken, none from Tassie or the NT and only one from each of the northern academies - Suns taking Lombard, Lions taking Gallop, Pies taking the Swans academy kid and then two out of the Giants academy.

You could even make the argument that the northern Academies aren't producing more. I mean looking at the 22 draft and there was only one kid drafted on a main list, and four taken as rookies from the northern academies and then you get an outlier like last year where the Suns get four first rounders and Vic clubs start losing it.

It really is absurd and typical VFL reactionary BS and now they are brining in the discount from 20 to 10 %.

There will definitely be another outcry next year with us looking likely to get another top 5 rated academy boy in Daniel Annable... the Suns could have another draft like when they got 4 first rounders in the 2023 draft > Jed Walter(3), Ethan Read(9), Jake Rogers(14) and Will Graham(26).

Next years draft the Suns have the highly rated Zeke Uwland, Dylan Patterson and Beau Addinsall, probably unlikely to be able to match all 3.

Edit- Maybe they will be able to match multiple first round bids. Just had a look at the Suns picks for next year, they already have 3 first round selections, going on this years finishing positions they are picks 6, 10 and 17... they also have a reasonably high 2nd rounder at pick 24.

Mclachlan will be as good as he wants to be IMO. He has the skills and goal nous to succeed at any level, it'll just be how much he's willing to apply himself defensively as to whether he makes it in the AFL.
He's almost like a reverse Daniel Menzel. He's currently playing like the version that did four ACLs but was still a great finisher. Though he has the potential to be as dominant as Menzel was early days if he can round out his game.

Sounds a bit like Kai Lohmann a couple of years ago.

More clips:
From final regular season fixture 2024 (against soon to be QAFL Premiers Morningside

Ty Gallop - 8 Goals (could easily have been 10)

(It pays to watch more than 1 shot at goal before deriding someones kicking action .......)

Wearing number 3 there too
Just saying!

"Should have gone to Specsavers" ......... wearing No.8

😵‍💫

Any uptake on future numbers for our new recruits. Ashcroft to take 10 for sure
Interesting he's also played in the number 2 jumper

Big O is apparently likely to miss until round 5 with Fort rucking. Day seemed way to confident that he's been told he's playing early
