I think you're massively jumping to a conclusion off a shaky anecdote. Surely you've been around footy long enough to know that everyone puts mayo on any footy story, especially high school coaches. When looking for the above references I found Blicavs' school times and they had him at 9:43 for 3.1km as a 16 year old, hence the caveat around the story.
