129 - Allison Downie, basketballer.

Downie began her professional career in 2000, for the Dandenong Rangers. Since then, Downie has played over 300 WNBL games in 15 seasons for the Rangers. She has also won three WNBL championships and took home the WNBL Rookie of the Year Award in 2002. She has been a strong, permanent member of the Rangers roster for over a decade. [1]

The 32-year-old played 326 games for Dandenong Rangers over 16 years but with a new job, playing in the WNBL this season proved too difficult and she made the decision to turn her attention to a new goal.

Downie has been playing top-level football for the past five years and she made the VFL Women’s team of the year this season after an impressive run in the ruck for Diamond Creek.

She has toured Collingwood and has attracted interest from other clubs ahead of the draft.

“Everything is outside work hours because all the girls are working, it’s a shorter season, it’s exciting and I thought ‘why not, why not give this a go?’,” Downie said.

24. Rebecca PRIVITELLI 3-JAN-95 170cm Victoria/Eastern Devils
Reliable defender who recently transferred to Eastern Devils from Darebin for greater playing opportunities. Grew up playing footy with boys, before starring at youth girls level. Spent past couple of years finding her feet at senior level. Has natural skills to tear the game apart.

REBECCA Privitelli always dreamt of being part of the AFL.

The Yan Yean resident started playing with St Marys Greensborough Junior Football Club in the under-10s, but at 14 joined a female team as her male teammates became too big.

She persevered and was last year selected at number 14 for the Western Bulldogs in the inaugural AFL Women’s Draft and was retained this year.

Now she studies sports management at La Trobe University and mentors the first girls’ team at her old club.

Waiting for some of the profiles to be put up so we can see how we are set positionally and age wise. Have most up though. Also have the free agent signings to go - 3 each team.

24 on our list at the moment so looks like we will have 27.

The 3 free agents named. Picked up 2 from the Bendigo Thunder - mid Jess Kennedy and forward Hayley Trevean - and Alison Brown from St Kilda Sharks, drafted after all of 9 games in her entire life.

Theres a lot of cross coders who picked up the game after the AFL announcement - check out a lot of the rookie picks. Our own Nat Exon didnt pick up the game until after the cut off date in June, and still played on the wing for Darebin - probably the single strongest womens club in Australia - in their 2016 premiership.

True, but Nat like a lot of the others had played footy under age, my understanding is that Alison didn't. But yes there are a few that have been drawn to try the game for the first time, this is being replicated at under age and local level with dramatically increasing participation rates in female footy and by females in footy (both women's/girls' teams and under age mixed teams). This can only drive the women's game forward at a rapid rate one would think.
