Drop Marnus, Smith, Lyon and Khawaja immediately. They should not be seen sporting the baggy green again.

At least give yourself a chance.
Lyon will not get dropped let's be real....conditions have not suited a spinner so far this test

marnus yes I agree with

Smith no because of his overall record but then end is coming fast

ussie .....end of the series for me as we need an experience opener with Mcsween

You can lose a test.

We often look at teams like Pakistan and how haphazardly they chop and change on the back of one result. Australia while not exactly winning with colossal regularity, are still doing it a bit more than they lose. Just getting rid of a whole slew of players in one hit after one match would be something of an overreaction

it worked for them this time, to be fair.

But they don't Phat.. very conservative with selection....and we play players who are not in form but play them based on there ecords...marnus smith ussie to name a few

look at india yes they had to be make some forced changes due to injury Gill and baby Sharma......but they where very happy to leave out Ashwin and Jadeja and pick a team that suits the conditions .....australia don't

One or two makes sense. But some of the posts calling for sweeping changes on the back of one result at the start of a series to me doesn’t make a lot of sense just yet

And Warner should of been moved on 2 yrs ago

Cricket Australia to me just seems like a massive boys club.
Once you're in, you're in for life and performance is irrelevant as long as you're mates with the guys at the top. We've seen it for years, squads get picked on past reputation rather than current output. It's difficult because it's such a small group, I could imagine it would be an awkward situation when Cummins has to tell his mates they're not playing anymore. It doesn't seem like they know how to do it, everyone can just continue on as long as they want and no one is giving them the tap on the shoulder.
Let's be honest, Warner went on way too long. Smith is done. Starc should probably be done in the test format at least. Labuschagne needs to drop down a level and earn his spot back. Head is averaging 23 this year and needs to kick in to gear. Khawaja is going ok, but hasn't made a century in 25 innings and is nearing 40. Its time to start blooding the replacements, ok good we've given McSweeney an opportunity, but we're going to need to find 4 or 5 more players somewhere who can step up to test level.

Konstas needs to get a look in. I'd drop Marnus for him in Adelaide.

Oh yeah I agree....my point is India have the balls to make the harsh calls....leaving a spinner out this test. Leaving Ashwin Jadeja out was a huge call and its worked for them

australia don't have the balls and haven't for ages

Consider this Hindsight is a wonderfull thing and yes he has a fantastic record......but really is Lyon really needed this test??

We have an ageing bowling attack...and we have just lost our gun allrounder he provides that break for the aging quicks....Marsh hasn't event bowled in the shield this year ....could we have gone 4 quicks based on what we saw of the pitch yesterday ???.....yes it's a harsh call resting Lyon...but sometimes as a selector you need to make the call....thats what you get paid for ...

But its easy to go the tested path...which I understand the big 4 as they have done it in the past.....but sometimes you need a change

Marnus

He keeps getting out in the slips knicking off all the time......his batting in the first innings was pathetic just put poor pressure on his partner

Both himself and Smith have been struggling for years.....cant play two in the same team atm...smith will stay because of his record

this 2nd innings is going to be Huge for marnus....for me he has to get a big score 70 plus to stay in..

but most likely they will give him another test in Adelaide
Don't think Bailey & Co have the minerals Westy.

Reckon it will be like the Ashes where they kept picking Warner even though Broad was getting him out for fun.

Warner was kept a year too long.

Seems these days, the players not only get to pick which games they want to play, they get to pick when they retire as well.

Doesn't appear to have hurt India.
Since there are a lot of players in the indian cricket system, those who are not good enough to earn ipl contracts , are forced to sharpen their craft in their version of the sheffield shield. So they are never short of players knocking on the door for a test spot.

I wonder how many of the shield cricketers have multiple contracts with t20 outfits in different leagues.

Some might say this an overreaction but this result and the West Indies game last summer has been a long time coming.

The reason why Warner kept going and was allowed to us because they hadn’t developed another opener that was competent or backed them in and that shows with McSweeney opening.

Back in the day I remember a lot of quality batsmen like Divenuto , Blewett, Bevan , Lehman, Law to name a few would pile on the shield runs but might get a run in the white ball format and in some of those examples would then get the chance in the tests.

Why on earth haven’t we been playing these potential batting replacements in the white ball format? Marcus Harris and co can smack around first class bowling on flat decks all the want here but nothing would prepare them more for international cricket than facing quality international bowling like Rauf in the past series gone.

I understand the game is completely different but good players are good players no matter the colour of the ball.

Selectors shot themselves in the foot thinking you can play Green and Marsh together which you can’t. The only possible way you could is if the keeper was one of the top 5 bats. With Green Carey Head and Marsh you’ve got an extremely loose middle order that is very much boom or bust.

The end is near for Ussie who I’ve loved and Smith so potentially you lose 2 of your top 6 at the same time and given the fact we’ve essentially stuck with the same bowling unit for the last 10 years we will end up at a stage they all retire or completely drop off form wise at the same time. Don’t get me wrong for the last couple of years that bowling unit has completely upheld their end of the bargain but at some stage they have to start planning for the future and get some fresh blood in there. Again the biggest question is who? The “promising” “Fast” bowlers they seemingly had earmarked as the next biggest things at stages of their careers have all continually broken down or lost it form wise Stanlake, Merideth, Richardson and Morris. Neser is the next best outside of Boland but it’s not really looking forwards and they are reluctant to pick him due to lack of bowling speed. Who else is out there that you could see becoming the faces of this attack in a few years? Bartlett looks good in the white ball format, not sure how Johnson will go?

If India win this series and Marnus and Smith don’t fire do Aus bite the bullet which would mean fresh faces for the Ashes. Highly unlikely they will make those changes.

It’s a bit concerning when your thinking of next best in terms of batting regardless of position and the name that comes up for me that’s been more consistent than most over the last period of time is Webster again another all a rounder and you surely couldn’t see Green Webster and Marsh all in the same side.

What it shows is that the batting collectively hadn't really been that good for years. I'd back an Aussie Test team from the 1990s through to the mid 2000s to beat the current team or the Aust team of the past 10 years

Yeah I agree but they might be forced this time tuggs......jobs might be on the line

No batter apart from Marsh has a record really good enough lately. Any of them could be dropped.

Winning has papered over the cracks. Problem is performances like this test make people look behind the wallpaper and realise the whole house is about to collapse.

Even the bowling which has been better than the batting still hasn’t been great. The moment they face any sort of resistance they go to water (Starc especially) and look completely non threatening.
