Seemingly overlooked among our new recruits was the latest player to join the club (back in December) - Jas Grierson.

Jas is in her prime age-wise and has considerable experience (61 AFLW games). She is something of a journeywoman and we are her 4th club. She was originally drafted by Melbourne (played 13 games over 2 season, 2017-2018), then spent 3 seasons at NMFC for another 19 games, before being at the end of 2021 where she spent 4 seasons (including both the 2022 seasons) for another 29 games. Here's a short video and bio of her from her time at GWS: https://www.gwsgiants.com.au/players/aflw/1530/jasmine-grierson. She's been coached by Scotty Gowans before (as a junior and at NMFC) and has connections with Bec Privitelli and Tanya Hetherington via GWS.

Jas seems to be one of a few players that might be competing for Ella Heads spot. Ash van Loon and Amelia Martin are also medium sized defender types (although I guess it remains to be seen where Amelia Martin is played).

Here's her page on australianfootball.com https://australianfootball.com/players/player/Jasmine+Grierson/19953

She will wear jumper #11.

What a great acquisition she's been! Invaluable composure and experience in our young backline.

I can't say I have followed her career but somehow I get a vibe she's playing some of the best footy she's played in a while with us. Has anyone else followed her career any more closely and can comment more?

I think they said she's been at four clubs
..she's such a cool cat. The only thing I can say shes not only invaluable with her calming role but her and Zippy are inseparable it seems.

Yeah, 4 clubs: Melbourne, North, GWS and now us. They also mentioned that not only did she kick her first and only other goal in Melbourne's first ever AFLW game but also that it was their first goal ever. How cool!

But I don't know how she has gone at those other clubs. She started as a forward at Melbourne but was switched back in her first season, where I think she has remained ever since. She got a rising star nom after her 4th game and that is the only individual accolade I can find that she has won.

I presume she got to know Scott Gowans while she was at North Melbourne and so they had a connection before she arrived. Jas also has a connection with assistant coach Tanya Hetherington, from when they played together at GWS.

She only turned 27 this year. I wonder why she was delisted? I guess she's not the most talented player out there but it seems she still has a fair bit to offer from our point of view. We could get years more out of her depending on how the rest of our squad competes for that spot.

The words from Scott in this article couldn't ring truer after what we've seen so far.
'Having coached Jas previously as a junior at the Dandenong Stingrays and at AFLW level at North Melbourne, I have always rated her ball use and ability to make good decisions under pressure,” Gowans said.

“Jas will add composure to our backline and experience to our squad.”

Not much doubt that the Swans have settled into a strong back 4 with AA Brenna, tall one percenter Alice, whirlwind Ash and the cool, calm and composed Jaz. With support from Zippy, Lulu and Lucy they look very much a long term proposition.
Yes ! Cool cat Jas.

Indeed! And, although she hasn't stood out that much, let's not forget Julie O'Sullivan.

Here's an interview with Scott Gowans showing how far he goes back with Jas Grierson. The interview is from 2018 just after she'd been traded from the Demons to the Kangaroos and he was her new coach (and had hair!). He refers to how he got to know her and started coaching her at the Dandenong Stingrays in 2015 (when she would have been 16 or 17):

In another interview I saw she also references that she hails from Mitcham and claims a connection with Tassie via her dad whose family come from Tassie.

Obviously Grierson looks a little older now. But i was most struck by how much Gowans has visibly aged over the past seven years. I hope that's not the Swans' fault. He also looks uncannily like Brad Scott in that footage.

They might not have come if Gowans weren't here, but I think now that they're in the door the departure of Gowans isn't likely to be a problem (unless there is a clash with the new incoming head coach).
