Fixture How can Swans host a local final at a smaller stadium, but Geelong can’t?

I bring this up all the time. 13/17 clubs currently get "home finals" at their chosen home ground (I don't include GC because that is an unknown). The other four (cats, north, saints and bulldogs) get shafted. Why are our four clubs the unlucky ones?

Fixture How can Swans host a local final at a smaller stadium, but Geelong can’t?

This comment has been addressed many times here. In the 60s, these teams played no games at the G except for away games vs Melbourne, and finals, making it (mostly) a neutral venue. It's not the 60s anymore, and Finals are no longer neutral. Port are hosting at the AO, Sydney at the SCG...

Indeed, the only teams suppoters on this forum who have campaigned for the inequity are those from collingwood and richmond for the most part. The blues and dons would, but it's been a while since either has consistently played enough finals for it to be on thier radar.

A fair comparison of capacity is 40k v 60k. The MCC and AFL members don't count, they're just another group of freeloaders who feel entitled to neutral game access. If the MCG needs that to fill the coffers good for them, but their ability to attend games is not my concern. Those 20k missing...

Fixture How can Swans host a local final at a smaller stadium, but Geelong can’t?

Indeed, and KP is in Victoria and therefore qualifies. If GWS can host at Engie, we can host at KP. What's the difference? I know the point you're trying to make, but you're actually making a second one by stealth. Away games should not have any contracts attached to them. The fixture is...

Fixture How can Swans host a local final at a smaller stadium, but Geelong can’t?

    1. Geelong AFL members are Club members by default, so they won't miss out on the member pre-sale. The neutral hawk/bomber/pies AFL members will, and I don't care about them (unless they are the away team - they get access through their associated club membership). MCC is a cricket club, if you...

Fixture How can Swans host a local final at a smaller stadium, but Geelong can’t?

Yes, because we've earnt the right to play at home. At KP, the ratio would at worst be 60/40 in our favour. At the G for a "home final" we're lucky if the ratio gets close to 60/40 the other way (ie lucky to get up to 40% of total crowd supporting us). The people who miss out are the MCC and...

    Opinion Dees to Marvel?

The nine Melbourne clubs should have home games scheduled on a crowd/need basis, that was the whole point of ground rationalisation. Won't happen due to a wide variety of historical and monetary reasons.

AFL Silver Membership Waitlist Number Part 2

I don't need two seats, but got plenty of family and friends who I'm happy to help out and would do so again (once I've got mine first - no guarantee in the ballot).

There is an exception here for cats fans at least. Your reserved seat membership is a separate barcode to your afl membership allowing you to double dip in the prelims and also the GF ballot.

Problem is the AFL itself. Whilst it should be the same every year, if Pies or Richmond finished 1st they'd give them a Friday QF. So then you end up with problems like this.

Mega Thread VICBias - Genuine Discussion Part 2

In terms of ultimate fairness, 1v4 should be on the saturday. The winner of 1v4 gets the Friday prelim to get 8 days into the GF, whereas the extra day doesn't make a difference (13 v 14 days) at the other end. The winner of (the Loser of 2v3 and Winner of 6v7) play that same Friday Prelim, so...

Fixture How can Swans host a local final at a smaller stadium, but Geelong can’t?

It seats 40,000. No different to the old subiaco or football park that was sufficient, no different to the SCG and Gabba today, and way more than what GWS hosted in multiple finals including prelims. Playing surface is top quality, no issues there.

Fixture How can Swans host a local final at a smaller stadium, but Geelong can’t?

Imagine if the AFL signed a contract for two games to be played at homebush every year and forces GWS to play those games. You wouldn't consider those to be true home games, and neither do we. AFL signs stupid contracts and we just have to cop it. Even after spending $200m on stadium upgrades we...

Fixture How can Swans host a local final at a smaller stadium, but Geelong can’t?

MCG is a contractual obligation forced on us by the AFL, it's not our home ground. For example, we didn't use the home change rooms in our two "home" games there tihs year, nor in many of our "home" finals against Melbourne based clubs.

Has Competitive Equalisation created a need for wild-card finals?

Wildcard is only needed because of the extra games we play above playing every team once. Given how tight the ladder is, which teams you play twice make an absolute difference to finishing top 4 or 10th-12th. That's why the fixture needs to be changed. But adding wildcard round is just...

The GF venue (MCG) comes from long ago when it was the home team of one club for many years and then just two of 12 in the VFL for a few more years. So yes, the MCG used to be a (mostly) neutral venue for the biggest games only. But that's not the case anymore. 14/18 clubs get home finals at...

Opinion Why do Geelong get the final round fixture in Geelong every season (since the mid 2000's) ?

The real reason is quite boring and the same reason why bulldogs are playing in Ballarat and hawks playing in tassie. Gives the afl maximum flexibility in scheduling the final round. If they had 3 games lined up at the G or Marvel they have to play one on the Friday night. This way, they...

AFL Silver Membership Waitlist Number Part 2

Essendon Home games at Marvel are the worst for any away fan. They sell out pretty much the entire stadium except for L3 behind the goals to season ticket holders, makes it difficult to attend for the neutral/away fan (even an essendon fan who isn't a member). Also means that if they don't...

    Opinion Dees to Marvel?

These clubs can pull 80k, just look at Hawks v Carlton. The reality is that crowds drop quickly when not in contention. No club is immune. The eagles have dropped off compared to when Optus first opened. Both port and crows have been competitive this season, therefore crowds have been higher...

    Opinion Dees to Marvel?

The melbourne clubs shouldn't have one "home" ground and this proves it. Sorry but no one enjoys going to the G when it has less than 40k, it just feels empty (because it is). Gosch's Padock needs to become a 30k seat stadium boutique stadium for when clubs can't fill the G, similar design to KP...

    Round 24 Fixture Prediction

Why is there 3 games on Saturday night? We have the pre-finals bye now, so no need to push the top 8 teams early into the fixture. AFL will want to spread it out as much as possible. Very likely that if Fremantle v Port decides a top 4 or 8 spot, it will go 6pm Sunday like they did with Carlton...

    Hobart stadium

The 23k came from the Carter report. They forecast ROI against crowd capacity and graphed it. The graph peaked at 23k capacity, before levelling out at max ROI until about 28k before ROI drops off. They really should have taken the maximum crowd and ROI, not the max ROI and min cost.
