Tonight is rock bottom. Losing Chom hurts as much as the 94 prelim. Ive been telling my 3 kids he’s our new Benny brown, Nick Larkey. Looks like we’ve lost McKay as well. Tonight is tragic.
It’s hit me that we’ve now lost our 2 best young mids JHF and TT, our young FF Comben and our young FB McKay. We will go again to the footy next week vs the saints, because we support north Melbourne

LDU is still our best mid. Light a cigarette, stair yourself in the mirror and repeat this.

BELIEVE.

I think that’s it.

I’ve got a good feeling.

I think we are on the way back up now.

TT to star in the VFL.
Drury to kick 3 & we beat the Saints.
It must be close to rock bottom if we're hanging our hats on a guy suspended from the club and a rookie listed player playing his debut.

If we were a movie, we'd be The Abyss.

Or that movie where they had a comp and one lucky person was to be blasted into outer space.

And the kids sat around the tele and watched their teacher be blown to pieces. Oh that may not have been a movie come to think of it

Darn it !

There is no bottom. It's endless.
It’s possible this team being winless next year, we are not improving and not many of our draftees have come on
Throw in 5-6 senior retirements and 1-2 good players who ask for a trade or free agency sign elsewhere, it’s possible
Getting drafted to north maybe worst than Gold Coast in years ahead
We’d better fix this quick, it’s got a look of a sinking titanic at present

After whinging and whining my way through another game, I hope I have finally come to terms with where we are at. I think the following is around the mark:-

We are 2% across the board behind the competition average.

The players are trying their guts out.

We always field 3 players who are clearly not up to the required standard and never will be.

We were warned about this by Clarko at the start of the season. However, even though we happily accepted it, some of us (me🤣) refuse to countenance this reality on gameday.

Melbourne, at their nadir, lost by 200+ points in a game. That fate could well be ahead of us - Geelong at GMHBA - R17.

Unless, I can come to terms with the above and view games in that light, I should just stop watching North until the team turn things around and become competitive again.

Stick it out. I accepted where we are weeks ago. It doesn't stop me going to games or watching on TV. As soon as the song plays and there are players running around in the North melbourne jumper I am engaged.
This time is different because we have a coach who is committed for the long term.

Final ladder position: 16th, (4W-18L) 67.5% (ahead of expansion sides GC & GWS, against whom 3 of their 4 wins came).

After playing three susccessive finals series in 2004-06, Melbourne finished 14th (5-17) in 2007 when coach Neale Daniher stepped down after 10 seasons.

That was followed by two wooden spoons with 3-19 and 4-18 seasons, then 12th and 13th in 2010 and 2011, with Todd Viney as caretaker coach when Dean Bailey was sacked mid season.

Mark Neeld took over in 2012, with the results shown above.

In 2013 and 2014, Melbourne finished 17th both times, with GWS last in 2013 and St Kilda last in 2014. Melbourne's W-L in those two seasons was 2-20 and 4-18. Paul Roos was now coach.

In 2015 Melbourne finished 13th, moving to 11th in 2016, then 9th in 2017 in Goodwin's first year.

In 2018 they finished 5th and won two finals before dropping to 17th in 2019, then rising back to 9th in 2020. We all know what happened in 2021.

So, from 2007 to 2014, Melbourne won 22 games in those 8 really really bad seasons. Seven years later they won a flag.

Contrast with NMFC:

Our last final was in 2016, having also played finals in 2015 and 2014. Since then, we have finished 15th, 9th, and 12th, with 6, 12 and 10 wins in those seasons.

From 2020 to now we have won 11.5 games in three seasons plus 9 rounds, a slightly better average than Melbourne 2007-2014. Note that Melbourne had some morale boosting wins against GWS and GC in their first years in the comp, so their record could have been even worse.

We have more pain to go, but we still have a ways to go to match what happened to Melbourne, and they are proof that anything is possible with the right personnel.

Would we actually beat any of the following? Cause when I think of historically bad teams these come to mind first.

Melbourne 2008-2013
Carlton 2002-03,
Gold Coast/GWS 2011-12
Ess 2016
Port 2011
Fitzroy 1996
Melbourne was a horrific list but had really good days. Their coaches at the time were hated but they did have some amount of nous, of which Noble had none. I think we get by on talent, JUST.

Carlton kill us.
Ablett tears us apart as per usual and gets them over line in the goldy game.
GWS 2nd year do us comfortably but 1st year may be a stretch.
That essendon team had a crack and was experienced, im backing them.
11 Port is a toss of a coin, i thought that was as bad as footy got.
Never saw Fitzroy but they’d be ****ing motivated.
