We played finals the 2 following years to winning a premiership though

We are probably the opposite of Port 2004
Finished top 4 both years in H&A following the premiership. Disappointing finals campaigns, but we shot ourselves in the foot last season. Had the better of both finals, just couldn't finish. Just because we haven't won another flag, doesn't mean we've been s*! Yep, we lost the 4 most important games since the premiership. But we've hardly been disappointing. Geez the miserable campaigners are out early this season. Not even waiting until after the first game. Would love to see another flag, especially at the G. But we deserved our flag on 21. We didn't wing it on the back of a big month like the Dogs did in 2016, or get lucky at any stage. We earnt it and we've been close since. Some people just look for negativity any chance they get. Fingers crossed we're in for another finals campaign this year. It's wide open.

Shaun Smith was on TODAY potting the club again. Geez you’d be embarrassed as his son. Like I get our club is probably ****ed, but stop trying to deflect from the bad choices your son made.
It's annoying we live in a world where everyone's too scared to just say nah mate, you need to take responsibility as a parent.

Link?

Shaun is so blind. He blindly defended us when his son was playing for us, now he's son has ****ed up he blindly attacks us because he can't seem to comprehend his son might be a problem.

You know what buddy, this turn the other way and try to cover for your son is the reason he turned out like this. This is why he was stupid enough to think he could get away with doing coke before a game. Yeah we have issues, learn to accept he's a part of it, not a victim of it

How wasn't the bloke in the medical model stream where he could do as much blow as he wanted whenever he wanted?

He also had the soft tissue injury history to not raise suspicion when he was pulled before a game with a hammy.

Sorry Joel, this one's on you m8

Jake Niall or someone wrote that the Joel Smith upcoming hearing will be a referendum on the AFL’s illicit substance policy.

Dunno why given the issue with Smith is that he didn’t make use of it. I don’t know whether he is dumb or just stupid

Or Both,

Shaun's a bit like my mum, as if her nice little baby toump could ever put a foot wrong!

Kinda enjoying watching all this unfold.

My takeaway from the following quote from the article, is that Dad's carrying on like a campaigner and giving Joel the absolute shits!!

"Smith also revealed he had urged his son to seek alternative legal advice as part of the SIA process.
“Because I’ve been pushing for another legal opinion, it’s really hurt my relationship with Joel,” he said.
“They have driven a wedge between my son and his family.”"

That's the way cookers talk. Pretty sad tbh.

I'm sure this has been answered before but one thing I don't quite get is how the SIA got access to Smith's phone records that resulted in the trafficking charge? Did he voluntarily hand over his devices or did they get the right to basically raid his personal belongings once he tested positive?

from memory I'm pretty sure he was dumb enough to provide the messages as proof he wasn't Joelsniffing for performance enhancing reasons.

That's like something out of Arrested Development

Watching through it i'm glad he's taking 'some' accountability without Dad trying to make every excuse for him

It's a pretty boring interview tbh. Gibson is keeping it fairly soft and light which makes sense on this kind of podcast but ultimately the only bit worth listening to is the part about getting his ban. As harsh of a penalty it was he still didn't seem to fully understand why he got 4 years and didn't just get off with three months. He probably hired the wrong lawyers.

It seems like he's in a good headspace about it all now though which was nice to hear and I wish him well.

What I found kind of wild is that he can't play any competitive sport for the full four years (i.e. no weekend club golf competitions, midweek night-time basketball leagues etc).

I mean, I get it to an extent. But that feels particularly brutal considering that it was a recreational drug. As he jokes about at one point, cocaine being in your system playing elite-level sport would be very unlikely to be advantageous (to say the least lol).
