Luke Power has to be questioned.
Another flying under the radar, because he has a "name"

I wouldn't question Power on what he is doing with an injury prone VFL squad leftovers

I'd actually like to see him included as an assistant at AFL level

That is a valid comment.

He has been running development since end of 2019. So he is up to his 6th year.

Outside of the obvious first rounders picked by SOS, in 2015... its fair to question whether any of the other kids have really come on in his tenure...

Development is his expertise, from that 2019 announcement. But we sit here questioning if our kids have come on, the skills they have etc.

Is that development, picking the wrong kids to begin with, or both? Or a gameplan that doesnt play to their strenghts?

Our VFL team has been woeful, for years... how do we explain this fact.

For Power...
Is he wearing too many hats?
Maybe its time for assistant role?
Maybe its time for a change?

But from what i see, there really shouldnt be any sacred cows...

Power is wearing too many hats…

We were seeing players improving when Powers main focus was the development of our players..

Not sure why Power took on the VFL coaching role. Seems to me, to be a backwards step on the resume.

He is severely hamstrung with how the team plays, I dare say it has to mirror Voss’s game plan and the senior team…

I’d love to get Power and Lappin together with the sole focus of development or both in as line coaches…

I think the head of development role and vfl heading coaching role can crossover a fair bit, hence why he took it on.

There's bugger all difference between the two roles, providing Power doesn't have to take on all aspects of running the 2nds.
He should also be Voss's 2nd main advisor behind Hansen. It's an important role, are his views taken on board?

Power is doing a great job considering the availability of players.

20% of the list spots on small forward, none of whom are any good. Holding open a list spot on the off chance a 30+ year old miraculously returns earlier than expected from a serious knee injury for 2 years in a row whilst we have no depth for other critical positions like ruck and key position players.

Lloyd is hopefully already gone and Voss may well be gone shortly but Austin need to be sacked also IMO.

Watching Davidson carve it up is frustrating given he was available at the draft for a future 3rd.

We could have haggled a bit better in a few places, been prepared to push a player like Binns out the door so he had more opportunities, and got back into the draft without breaking a sweat.

Imagine a draft haul of Hotton, Hynes, O'Farrell, the Campo twins, and Davidson. Was right there, with a little extra work put in.

Binns in his third season - 3 games. Doesn't look close to the seniors right now.

Lemmey in his third season - Yet to debut. Nowhere near the level. Yes, he's a tall but you still need to see more than what he has produced.

The fact that Lucas Camporeale debuted in round 1 as an 18 year old, ahead of players who have been there longer without playing a game, is a sad indictment on our depth.

We hang on to players who aren't pushing for senior selection way too long. We keep second guessing natural talent instead of looking at progress.

Today if it were up to me. The state of our list from a "foot soldier" perspective appears so substandard its laughable.

The following players who played against the dogs are not afl finals standard
Haynes, Mcgovern, Cowan, Acres, Williams, Fogarty, Motlop, Evans, Docherty,

Acres has proven he can play at that level but he is in a funk at the moment and I think Haynes isn’t as bad as many others on here do.

That said I don’t think Cottrell, Cowan and (whilst he was good last night) Young are good enough for AFL finals standard.

We have no depth at all. Austin has had long enough to fix our problems but he has actually made our list worse. He has to go IMO.

I know Jagga doing his acl is just bad luck but we lost 2 first round picks in a great draft and likely a high pick this year to the Hawks.

Clearly the list was massively overrated by Austin if he thought it was sensible to go all out for just one player.

Yes this is using the benefit of hindsight but we are a long way off the pace.

He has to go. The rebuild is a bust.

Doesn’t work like that we never had all picks at once. We gave up 2 picks for 3 and jagga is worn that. We won’t finish bottom 4 this year we will recover a bit once some of our stars get back into form and the likes of Elijah and McKay come back

Did we give up pick 12 and 14 and this years first pick for one player?

Jagga might be the next Chris Judd but if the depth of quality drops off a cliff because he has no support he won’t be the difference.

Acres post back surgery is not finals.std.

No we didn’t, we traded our first this year for 14 and traded 12 and 14 for 3

We never once had all 3 picks at once

It looks like an absolute howler of an off-season tbh.

There is a real incoherence in what we did. We traded far too much for Smith. Sorry, but if we land bottom 4 (increasingly likely) it ends up being our first and second picks this year, and our first last year, and Owies. Too much

But alongside this, we were shedding depth. Kennedy went cheap. Owies went cheap. Carroll went out. We culled some other backups like Markov. Somehow we ended up starting the season with:

  • no backup to Curnow/McKay except the unplayable Lemmey, and out of position Young
  • only one backup ruck (O'Keefe).
  • only 30yo Acres, 20yo Hollands and Cottrell with any wing experience.
  • first backup midfielder was going to be Smith. Second Lord. Third... Ben Camporeale? Basically we started needing one rookie in the team, and we are a Cerra hammy or a Cripps back flare up away from simply not having a midfield ready to go

So on the one hand we are mortgaging the farm for a single rookie. On the other hand, the list was clearly going through a bit of a reset. And that's ok - teams need to refresh things every so often. I think we felt that getting Smith ahead of F/S last year was important, and combined with a couple of second and third round academy guys this year that would provide a good talent injection

But trading out those picks has left us so vulnerable and in a truly bizarre spot now. If we end up bottom 4, we bring in Smith, a couple of academy guys, and everyone is a year older and do it all again? Anything mor than that means major sacrifice - TDK would get us our pick back, McKay or Curnow or Weitering gets us a first and second back, but stack that with Saad/Docherty/Williams/Acres and other starting to look closer to the end and suddenly we are in full rebuild mode... But with almost no picks or cap space....

Just generally a 'wow' moment on par with the 2014 disaster for me.

I’m hoping Smith will be a great asset for us. Looking forward to seeing him play in 2026. We need some quality youth. The ACL injury was just terrible luck.

My concern with the trade is that it appears we’ve grossly misread our prospects for this year. The trade kind of works if we finish top 8 but it’s way overs if we don’t, especially if we finish bottom 4.

The concerning part is the over assessment was made by Austin and presumably ticked off by Lloyd. Our own club can’t work out where we’re at. We’ve also got form with this when SOS and Lloyd did the same in 2018 for the Stocker trade.

This is why Wright is crucial. Someone with an impartial eye because he hasn’t built the list who actually has a track record of running a strong football department. I’m hoping he takes one look over this amateur operation and starts making changes.

I have to confess don't understand list management at Carlton - we missed a player who was training with us because Jack Silvagni pointed him out to St Kilda. We missed Markovic who was training with us -both cost peanuts. Markovic is a safer more capable bet than some of the players stuck in VFL because they aren't AFL players and never will be.

We rookied Evans ( after White) but ignore Phillips - when everyone knows that we are short a 2nd KPD- and he cost nothing. Voss criticised for bringing in Fantasia and Austin gets a free pass on Young - really?!!!

...I mean really...FMD Carlton is back to betting on skinny runt HBFers and hail mary small forwards.

the place is looking like it is managed by a disconnected rabble with big bets on lame ducks all over the place. Austin has a supposed bias towards picking clean skin players- but E Hollands has just dropped a massive dump on the Club meanwhile Moir cant be bothered getting fit and we persist with Lemmey type lame ducks.

Ridiculous rubbish.

The place needs a clean out because this list balance is just not up to it and the required ingredients have been obvious and been asked for since Voss arrived.
I'll always be cynical of the 'get what the coach wants' brand of list management and i don't think that's the point.

Regardless; I think we've been suffering for a long time from the idea that we are perpetually competing (or should be) and that the list is basically set. Attrition such as injuries, players losing form because of long term injury issues, and aging, is not taken into account. Other teams are static and don't improve, either.

What we basically do is rely on a 'messiah' with our first round pick each year, no matter how high or low the selection is, who is usually 'best available midfielder' given the nature of how the first round of drafts usually pan out.

The rest is made up of 'role players' and foot soldiers who we think will swamp the opposition by gathering enough of the loose ball to feed it to our stars. We are oblivious to the fact that these players were taken so late in the draft that their deficiencies start to show and that their abilities aren't cumulative and we can't play them all at once. There is no dynamism in any of it.

It’s funny how when Cook came on board, he stated that our list needed heaps of work to contend.

Now this year, he said we have the list to play top 4.

Honestly reckon our 2022 list was better than what we have now.
And this is my point on Cook.
Half out the door, and we are in a weird place.

Why is he hanging around?

Where is the contract status of players . Cant locate it … we need a mini clean out of players who are just not up to it …. I assume Austin has dead wood with contracts to the end of 2026 and 2027… over estimated our chances and tried to go younger cut depth and play cute … terrible list management
