Geno finished 19th in quarterback rating and 21st in qbr last season.

So do you buy into the theory that QB rating is the be all/end all stat to determine a QB's ability?

5 of his INTs last year were dropped passes or tipped balls. Quite the outlier, which would significantly affect QB rating.

I don’t but good indicator where QBs ranks. Smith is a closer to 20th best qb than the top 10 you are saying.

Geno threw 21 tds to 15 int last season that isn’t screaming top 10 QB.
He’s had one really great season 2022 in contract year next two years have only been solid not great.

Bo Nix is not a better QB than Geno.

And I don't think the gap between Herbert and Smith is all that much either.

Look at Hurts - he won the Super Bowl and I wouldn't call him a QB who can win games by himself. There are like 3 QBs in the league who are truly elite (Lamar, Mahomes, Allen). Jayden Daniels is well on his way to being in that category as well. After that, there's a group of 8-10 guys who can win with a good supporting cast around them. Geno is in that group, as is Herbert.

I'm still not sold on Nix - he had some great numbers this season, but he just didn't pass my eye test watching the Broncos this season. He still has a long way to go in terms of his development as a QB.
Real shame he won’t have a supporting cast then 😂

I agree the TD number is relatively low (13th in the league this year) - I'd also suggest over the last 3 seasons Smith has actually thrown more TDs than a guy like Justin Herbert. My personal opinion is that QB rating stinks - but Smith's QB rating this season was only 0.3 points behind Mahomes. His INT number is inflated by a third being drops or tipped balls, which is highly unlikely to be reproduced in future seasons.

I never called him a great player. He's a very least, he's a solid QB who you can win with and in that tier of QBs who are good, but aren't in that elite category.

It's an interesting discussion.

Seattle last season had Metcalf, Smith-Njigba, Lockett, Fant, Walker III and Charbonnet as the primary offensive skill players.

Right now, the Raiders really only have Meyers, Tucker and Bowers as locked in offensive skill players. Definitely a work in progress to say the least.

Raiders trade grade: A-

Smith, 34, might not be a transformative figure for this offense, as the Raiders still have significant ground to make up in the AFC West after the division's three other teams all made the playoffs. And despite completing a career-high 70.4% of his passes, he also tossed 15 interceptions. But the veteran signal-caller has proven himself capable of rising above subpar surroundings, as he engineered a stunning late-career resurgence despite the Seahawks' longstanding protection issues (the team ranked 21st in ESPN's pass-block win rate), particularly on the interior. He also had to compensate for a run game that disappeared entirely for stretches, with the team's imbalance tilting them toward the fifth-highest passing rate of any team.

Smith only has one year remaining on his contract, but multiple reports indicate an extension is forthcoming. But so long as the team doesn't have to make a sizable long-term commitment to a player who has been one of the league's best bargains at a pricy position, the Silver and Black look to have significantly bolstered their short-term outlook while still leaving themselves plenty of flexibility down the road. Bonus points, too, for landing a player to whom Carroll will have no trouble acclimating.

Seahawks grade: C-

Great to see Adam Butler retained.

Heading into free agency I have the following as needs:

  • RB x2
  • FB
  • WR1
  • WR4
  • TE3
  • OL depth x2
  • EDGE x2
  • IDL x2
  • LBer x3
  • CB1
  • Slot Corner
  • Safety
So a few spots then!

In that order?

No, that was just in the order of Madden NFL depth charts.

If I had to rank them in order:

  • CB1
  • Starting Mike LBer
  • RB1
  • Starting EDGE
  • WR1
  • Safety
  • Slot corner
  • RB2
  • Starting Will LBer
  • IDL x2
  • Backup EDGE
  • OL depth x2
  • WR4
  • rotational off-ball LBer
  • TE3
  • FB

Didnt see Spillane signed with the Pats, shame, thought he was excellent for you guys.
Yes, was a bit disappointed to see that he left. Pats money was maybe too much for us. We have shored up the dline if they can stay fit but lost a bit behind them. Chinn might be a decent pick up I guess.

Wasn't anything outrageous either the contract, compared to the rest of the going's on today anyway. Similar to the money decent linebackers were getting to re-sign with their teams yesterday.

I would like to think they have a replacement lined up like Chinn replacing Moehrig. But who knows.

I know PFF is far from the be all end all, but Chinn's PFF rating last season was higher than Moehrig's. I also think the transition to Vegas should be relatively seamless given Chinn played under Carroll disciple Dan Quinn in Washington. Schematically I think there will be a ton of similarity in terms of what he's asked to do in Vegas.

Great to see Koonce re-signed. I thought he was going to be a double digit sack guy last season prior to his injury. Disappointing to lose Spillane, I'm intrigued as to who they replace him with.

UPDATE: Elandon Roberts will be the new Mike LBer. Graded out similarly to Spillane the last few years and is significantly cheaper. Don't mind this signing at all.

Current needs list as of 251pm EDT:

  • CB1
  • RB1
  • WR1
  • Slot corner
  • RB2
  • Starting Will LBer
  • IDL x2
  • Backup EDGE
  • OL depth x2
  • WR4
  • rotational off-ball LBer

Eric Stokes signed to a 1 year 4M dollar deal. Athletic freak who plays exclusively on the outside. I think he will be competing for snaps and most likely be a backup corner.

I'm intrigued as to what the Raiders do at nickel. They tried Jakorian Bennett in the nickel his rookie season and that didn't exactly work - but Bennett was really, really good on the outside last year. I could definitely see them moving Jack Jones inside, though I don't think he has the wherewithal to put his body on the line when it comes to run fits.

I would love to see Mike Hilton in silver and black but I doubt that would happen.

Raheem Mostert to the Raiders. 1 year, 2.1M. provided he's healthy he should be a solid RB2 in a by committee system. I expect the Raiders to get their RB1 in the draft on day 2.

Remaining needs:

  • CB1
  • RB1
  • WR1
  • Slot corner
  • Starting Will LBer
  • IDL x2
  • Backup EDGE
  • OL depth x2
  • WR4
  • rotational off-ball LBer
  • TE3
  • FB

Former starting safety Marcus Epps agreed to a one-year, $4.4 million contract with the New England Patriots on Friday.

Epps joins former Las Vegas teammates, linebacker Robert Spillane and pass-rusher K’Lavon Chaisson to sign with New England this week. Spillane and Epps signed with the Raiders in 2023 when new Patriots’ offensive coordinator was Las Vegas’ head coach. The Raiders play at New England this season.
