Essendone have over-performed this year and that’s with the cushiest draw in the comp. He should be happy.

Essendon are actually a 10-14 side, even when they were top 4 on ladder. They have barely played teams in the 8 and barely won against any of them. I think 1 win v GWS and the rest lost. They have built a side on recruiting B-C grade mediocre players from other clubs during trade season and have not really developed anyone, despite having lots of top 10 picks in their ranks. They are treading water.

Interestingly in round 11, when the bulldogs were 11th and essendon were 2nd, my dominance matrices mathematics had them exactly swapped. It had Essendon 11th and Bulldogs 2nd.

The one thing it has got wrong this season is Hawthorn. (The first five rounds have screwed with the maths.) If we just use the last nine rounds Hawthorn are ranked 1.

Maybe you can incorporate a time-based weighting. The more recent the contest, the more indicative it is of form.

Fear not, embrace it. I mean we really didn't have an easy draw this year either given our start to the year. We need to defeat teams that are in the 8 to win it so why not start in the H/A
