WHEN CAN I PLAY? READ BELOW:
  • PlayStation (Physical): Thursday 4 May
  • PlayStation (Digital): 8:01am AEST Thursday 4 May
  • Steam: Currently 8:01am AEST Thursday 4 May, may be moved to 12:01am AEST
  • Xbox (Digital or Physical): TO BE CONFIRMED, unlikely to be 4 May

Those that pre-ordered PS versions will be able to play on Thursday, disks will have already been mailed by retailers, they will also be available in-store.

Steam will also be available Thursday.

Stating the obvious, we are still having issues with XBox.

Seriously, anyone that looks hard knows there’s issues - why do you think there are so many exclusives for a particular platform that are not marked as exclusive, but are only on that platform.

If I took that road, life would have been a lot easier.

Xbox digital and retail will release at the same time - that is not a decision we get to make.

It applies now and I will no doubt pay a price.

Re: commentary team
Hamish is still there, Daisy didn't make it into the final version of the game.

We added Gary and increased the workload of Harf.

Re: game availability/release dates
I can never give 100% guarantee about anything in the future, but as it stands today, the statement I am prepared to make it that all stock that is at retailers on 4 May will be available for sale.

As to the amount that will be there for sale, and whether it is enough, that is a question I cannot answer.

It will be made digitally available on the various platform holder electronic stores.

Clarifying, the game will not release prior to 4 May 2023.

I am vague as there is one platform that has had sufficient stock at retailers and the other has not, and I cannot name them (contractual reasons).

The game will not be further delayed because of the numbers of units in stock.

Re: Steam listing
I've already put in a request for the screenshots to be replaced with current ones, they'll probably only be there for a day.

As much as the feedback has generally been positive, these are old, meant to be placeholder only and were not meant to go live.

Re: playing lists
All playing lists are accurate for the 2023 season.

Re: content creator footage
This is all prior to day one patch (as some have noted updates like numbers etc are apparent)

Re: Career mode
A head's up on Career mode.

At the AFL 23 Launch night I mentioned the non-team based Individual Career Mode in an interview with Dean (Twistie3). As alluded to at that same event, we were working with the AFL and AFLPA to include as many past legends in the game as possible.

The great news is that we have received approval for far more AFL legends than were previously envisaged, but this has meant that we had to make the tough decision to divert resources away from the Individual Career mode development. The individual Career Mode function will not make it into AFL 23, Career Mode will be entirely team based. I expect this mode to be include in future iterations of the game.

Re: microtransactions
You do not have to make purchases, things can be earned.

Re: general development
So fundamentally flawed, in so many ways, it’s bananas.

We are doing AFL as it’s a passion project, without us doing it there would not be one being made.

So much more upside with making games that are played internationally, let alone one that will not even be played in every state in this country.

Gameplay actually looks pretty decent. Presentation also about 10 times better than any other AFL game we've had.

I will say though the player rankings are absurd. Every player needs to be dropped down by about 5-10 points. No offence to a team like North melbourne but they really should be ranked overall in the 70s, not 88.

I think the management modes will get a bit stale if most players are highly rated

I'll wait for AFL 25 then

Assuming this game is successful...

I’m happy with this!! Footy probably isn’t the best sport to replicate playing as one player unless you’d play as a midfielder to stay busy! In saying that Ross, will the Legends featured be locked behind Pro Team only or will there be an avenue to incorporate them into Management Mode or even List Manager? Cheers
You could say that about FIFA career mode or NBA 2k career mode if you don't play as a midfielder/forward or point guard respectively.

That argument is complete bullsh*t and people always say it.

Damn well that sucks
Player career was a mode I was hugely looking forward to, I’m hoping team management mode has a LOT more depth than what was shown then because these game modes are starting to sound pretty bare.

I’m guessing there’s no chance of even a basic player lock function as a sort of workaround ?

I actually thought the whole management mode seemed very light on:
  • There doesn’t seem to be any state league integration - so you can’t track how players are performing, you can’t even see which teams won in other leagues (which you could in Evo 2) and it doesn’t seem like you can manage a state team before earning an AFL job.
  • I couldn’t see any kind of training system so I’m not sure how we’re supposed to develop new draftees
  • There’s also a calendar view but I don’t know what would appear on there other than your weekly game

I’m assuming this is because it’s the early build because otherwise it’s a pretty bare bones management mode.
Your last statement is correct. It is just the submission build from weeks ago. Will be more in depth and polished then what it lets off. Hall of Fame and Pro Team also wasn’t on the main menu which was evident in Mitch Robbos video a month back.

Career mode options being cut to make room for the microtransactions mode.

BigAnt have transcended their humble beginnings and are now officially on par with EA.

Not that surprised they couldn’t work out a way to make the gameplay engaging with player career to be honest. Bit of a shame as the foundation from the cricket game was so strong.

It’s not they couldn’t make it engaging, it’s more the fact we can have more of our favourite all-time players in the game, plus I always found with the single player career mode, you just found yourself sitting at one end on the ground waiting and hoping your team could get it together.

Thanks for the heads up. Hopefully there is enough evidence that people are super keen for it, so that it does make the cut for a future game.
Enough people want it, including me.

It was never a back of box feature, it was a feature I personally wanted and tried to cram in, but I also wanted to make sure everyone knows this prior to purchase.

You could say that but I disagree. FIFA is 22 players total and NBA is 10. Way less congested sports and NBA particularly has a bigger difference in the player position picked.

Thank you for letting us know now. I know a number of other game studios wouldn't have said anything about a cut feature until after the game was out.

You can’t really compare 2k, since there’s only 4 other players on the court, compared to 17 others on the field, plus bench.

I think people are forgetting how hard it is to replicate our great game, and bit he whole team from bigant has done an amazing job so far. Yes there will be bugs and glitches here and there but they will be patched and graphically the game looks great, the first time I can look at a players scan and recognise who it is without the game telling me.
The motion of the gameplay looks great, the only major but in cados gameplay was the tackle laid just outside of 50, but once again it was an earlier release so it probably has already been fixed.

Yeah agreed, I don’t think sitting at one of the ground is very engaging.

This is true but at this point, I’ll still keep my expectations in check

The gameplay and graphics look magnificent but the game modes are starting to seem really light on

There’s a part of me that is starting to question whether state teams have made the final cut as we haven’t seen them or heard anything official

No your argument is. In AFL you are one of 36 players on the ground, compare this to 20 field players in soccer and 10 in basketball. There is a very significant difference.

NBA has a much smaller area of space to move, so I'm pretty sure basketball is way more congested as a sport than AFL is.

I just want to make a Nick Daicos type-player that runs everywhere on the field and calls for the ball every time I don't have it.

Really odd thing to say lol, you don't know anything about star team and it's microtransactions yet

Actually love that Giving homage to legends of our game and allowing people to play and pull them is so sick due to most of the younger crowd never seeing most of them play

It’s a bit weird that Wicked Witch seemed to have a much greater variety of game modes in Evo 2. Will miss a few of the additions they made in this one

But remember they have gone overboard with all the VFL stadiums they’ve included. It would make more sense to devote time to including VFL then going overboard with stadiums.

So you're saying one AFL player can't make a difference in a game? And I'm obviously wanting to play as a midfielder like I assume 99% of other people would if they played pro career mode.

You can literally play as the goal keeper in FIFA (a role where 90% of the game you sit around watching the ball). Not that I want to do that, but at least the option is there.

It’s easy to miss the info but we do know that mode will have micro transactions.

Ross confirms it at around the 7 minute mark here.

Pardon my lack of enthusiasm to filter through all the pages, but Michaels or even JNT BA / BigAntStudios , can you please explain the whole 'ball scanning' feature that was shown?
Is this something which we can do post release to add personal items into the game, or was it simply showing how the team at BA can add new things in very simply?
